Two men charged with the murder of Estella

| 30/10/2008

(CNS): A carpenter and a gardener have been charged with the murder of Estella Scott-Roberts. Larry Prinston Ricketts (25) and Kirkland Henry (27) both George Town residents appeared before Margaret Ramsey-Hale this morning and were remanded in custody. Both men were charged with robbery and abduction as well as murder, and Henry was also charged with an additional count of rape.

Police were unable to offer any comment on motives regarding the actions of the two men who were arrested by the RCIPS on Monday afternoon. In court the Solicitor General, Cheryll Richards, asked for the two accused to be remanded in custody because of the seriousness of the offences, the strength of the evidence and that as foreigners the men were a genuine flight risk.

Richards indicated that the men had recent possession of Scott-Roberts cell phones and there were specific forensics linking Henry to her. She also said the men had made detailed statements to the police.

With no legal representation but access to legal aid because of the severity of the offence, Ramsey Hale ordered that the men be taken to Northward and submit their legal aid requests and return before her on 6 November with legal counsel.

Speaking outside George Town Police Station early this morning announcing the charges, SIO Peter Kennett thanked the people and the media for their support since the murder. “The murder has rocked the Cayman Islands and sent shock waves throughout our community,” said Kennett. “Crime can not only be measured by the acts that place, but also by the reaction of the community in which they occur. The reaction we have seen since 11 October has been one of shock, disbelief, outrage and disgust. This is a testament to everyone that calls Cayman home. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Estella’sfamily. In particular, with her mother, Coreen, and her husband, Rayle.”

He added that this is a terrible time for everybody close to Estella, and even for those that did not know her. “Our condolences are sent to you all. This case is now subject to legal proceedings therefore, the RCIPS is not in a position to make any further comment,” Kennet concluded.

can we please have updates on the status of this case?

  2. Nicky Watson says:

CNS note: While we understand the depth of feeling in this case, we have to remember that this is an ongoing court case, and the two suspects have not been found guilty of the crime. We cannot, therefore post comments that assume their guilt.

Now that the RCIPS and the Caymanian Public seems to be speaking from the same microphone and seeing through the same lens, as is evident by the arrests and charges in the Estella Scott- Roberts murder case, let’s continue to move forward.

Lets create a "new partnership" between the RCIPS and the Caymanian public to solve these other outstanding murders in the Cayman Islands over the past years. No doubt, the information that is needed to solve these crimes are in the hands of the public.

    Here are some of the names of the victims;

Fredric Bise, Mark Jefferson, Marlon Brando Ebanks, Todd Powery, Leslie Hydes, Charles Scott-Bodden, Glen Bodden, Oliver Jackson, Name; ?? Jamaican national killed in "Logwoods" (Daisy Lane, W.Bay), Jamie Wood, Thomas Bush, Name: ?? H.M. Prison officer originally from Anguilla and killed in Bodden Town, Names; ?? Two individuals killed days apart in Scranton aka"The East" G. Town. (Maybe one or two others that I can’t recall at this time)

All of these Homicides were committed by criminal(s) that likely walk our streets today and should be at Northward Prison in solitary confinement. The families of these victims needs the same closure, that we have granted to the family of Estella Scott- Roberts. Lets come together Cayman Islands and clean up our streets of these " killers and vagabonds" before they  prey on more innocent people like Estella Scott-Roberts.

May Estella’s soul rest in peace.

The love of money is the root of ALL  evil. Is that the motive or the payment to carry out the motive? We need answers.  To anyone that may be involved, as long as life is in our bodies, we will not be quiet or scared, as we serve a BIG GOD that does not know what it is to be scared and he is still in control.

thats great work and relief to the famiy of Estella, I am however concerned about the time line, if she was seen leaving the restuarant after 1130 and the car was burnt around midnight that seems to be a bit tight for two men to grab, kill and now rape then move the car, set the fire and flee the scene.

I hope these are the right suspects and the evidence was handled properly to guarantee a conviction.

Good job to the RCIP, this will help restore some faith in our justice system.

I don’t get it?  Kirkland is a very nice, polite, courteous, hardworking, gentle, soft spoken guy???  How could he be capable of such a crime as this???  Could he have been forced to do this??? I believe Estella’s murder was a paid hired job, a "hit job".  Could Kirkland have been forced to do this by way of threat to kill his family members in Jamaica if he didn’t do it???  His Dad died recently from asthma and he was still real sad over his Dad’s death.   I think if a criminal profile was done on him, it just wouldn’t add up to him being able to volunteerily commit this horrific crime???  I am so dumbfounded and bewildered that he did this???

Also, why would they both carry around Estella’s cell phones so as to put evidence against themselves so easily like that???  I’m really confused???

Well done Peter Kennet and team.  Thank you.

While it is only natural for people to become impatient, especially with the perceived ‘slow pace of justice’, we must commend the police in the performance of this most difficult investigation.

I hope and pray this time, that due process has been adheerd to, and that IF indeed these individuals are responsible for this heinous craime, that there is no ‘Technicality’ that will pervert the course of Justice.

That the accused are from a country well known for producing this level of Sociopathic Criminal, I am hopeful that those who constantly cry out for ‘Human Rights for Criminals’ will now become more focused on the ‘Rights of the Victims’.

The greatest deterant to crime is ‘Corporal punishment’, and Execution is NOT an in-humane punishment, it is in-humane to protect criminals while their Victims live and suffer in fear.

I say bring back the ‘Cat’ (of nine tails), and Hang them high, so that they (Criminals) may live in fear, and not us Law-abiding citizens.

Well justice has prevailed and at this time my thoughts and prayers goes out to Estella’s Family & Friends. We in this small community cannot stand by and watch our way of life continue in downward spiral due to negative influences. We have had to suffer too many horrible crimes in recent years and I must say that we need to be more hard on criminals.

Estella lived her life for the good of protecting women & children yet she died due to ignorance and intolerance. I believe it’s time we changed our lax laws and start giving stiffer sentencing with Hard Labour whilst focusing on rehabilitation. I must commend The RCIP for doing a good job and also the support of public who without this crime would not have been solved. Our Immigration laws must also be reviewed and a quota system needs to be put in place we have too many different nationalities 140 that’s too much.

Let’s start focusing on solving the other murders such as that of Fredrick Bise and Mark Jefferson who were both brutally murdered.

Well done to Mr. Kennett & his team at the RCIP, prison is too good for these two men.

Excellent work RCIPS, your hard work and determination is to be applauded for bringing these charges before the court. I have no doubt that you have "Primary Evidence" to convict  these two criminals accordigly.

We must also applaud the "Caymanian Public" in general and "Cable & Wireless" for all of their support and assistance that led to these criminals being identified.

One should ask the question, Is it only Estella Scott- Roberts murder that these brutal criminals are responsible for?? I doubt it !!!

Lets all continue to give our support to the RCIPS Detectives and help them solve all of the other unsolved Homicides that exist today including Fredric Bise, Mark Jefferson, Marlon Brando Ebanks, Todd Powery, Donald Hooker Jr, Leslie Hydes, Charles Scott, Jamie Wood, Glen Bodden, Thomas Bush, HMP officer from Anguilla, Jamaican national murdered in "Logwoods" in Daisy Lane WB and also the other two murders that happened a few days apart which occurred in Scranton GT a.k.a. "The East" several years back. (Probably others as well, that I don’t remember at this time)

Now that the ball is rolling towards the criminals, let’s keep the pressure on so that the "police and the public" can continue to score goals against them and lock them away in solitary confinement at Northward Prison, where they ought to be.

I wonder what all the critics are saying now about the RCIPS ability to solve crime. This is the third consecutive murder that they have solved for this year and they did it without a single scotland yard detective. keep up the good work RCIPS and don’t be discourage by all the negative remarks of recent.

God bless the family of Estella and lets keep her memory alive by continuing all the good work she started by having an aggressive plan on combating violence in our society. Lets stop all the hot air and actually do something about eradicating violence in the Cayman Islands.

    Who do you trust?

I can’t believe this, i’m having a hard time believing this cause i somewhat know Henry as he did some yard work for us quite frequently and he is very polite, courteous, gentle, quiet, soft-spoken, hard working and i am absolutely in shock.  I can’t believe this guy who seems so nice could be such a cold blooded rapist and murderer???  If it wasn’t for the forensics, i would say he is not guilty and only bought the phone innocently from someone else not knowing whose phone it was.  But what do i say about the forensics linking him to raping Estella?  I am in disbelief???  I can’t believe this???  If this is true, then people of the Cayman Islands, i’m here to tell you, that just because someone you don’t really know that well is quiet, nice, polite, hardworking, courteous, gentle, soft spoken, be AWARE!!!  That person might not be all of that.  This is unbelievable to me.  Now i don’t know who is who anymore.  He showed no signs in our opionion of a person who could do something so horrific.  I am dumbfounded!!!!!!!!!!!
