Crash closes West Bay Road
(CNS): UPDATED 11: 45 am – Police have now confirmed the details of the car crash that closed the West Bay Road to traffic in both directions on Monday afternoon, 2 March, and resulted in the arrest of one driver and hospitalisation of another. The 911 Emergency Communications Centre received a call at approximately 4:20 pm from a member of the public reporting that a vehicle had flipped onto its roof in the vicinity of the old Courtyard Marriott Hotel.
Police and medics responded to the scene and found that a White Honda CRV and a Blue Jeep Wrangler had collided, causing the Honda to spin and overturn onto its roof. It appears that the Jeep had been exiting from Raleigh Quay and the Honda had been travelling south on West Bay Road when the collision occurred. The 58-year-old female driver of the Honda was taken to hospital for assessment and the 38-year-old male driver of the jeep was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving. Police said that he has since been released on bail.
The incident caused extensive delays during the evening rush hour with both lanes on the busy West Bay Road closed. Anyone who witnessed the incident who has not yet spoken to a police officer is asked to contact PC Stacy-Ann Stewart at the Traffic Management Department on 946- 6254.

All persons calling Crime Stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.

I have to agree with the second comment made here.
It seems the officers were far more interested in seeing an accident scene that was sufficiently manned than redirecting traffic.

RCIP would not know basic traffic control if it slapped them in the face. Yesterday was one such show of the "training" they have had, which looks like it amounts to none. As I drove past after sitting in the same traffic that they could have diverted andhelped ease I got even more upset to see them all laughing and joking. Professional? Not at all.
On another occassion I was driving by Kirk supermarket and the old Treehouse site on the other side of the road heading up SMB from town. There had been an accident on my side of the road with a car having hit a scooter. One police car had arrived and was parked on my side of the road and appeared to be attending to the scene, then another police car arrived in the opposite direction and guess what? Parked exactly opposite the first police car (double parking) thus creating even more problems for drivers trying to commute!!!!! I almost laughed at the stupidity had it not been that it was an accident.

A Shambles of basic traffic control – i must be critical of the police here for what turned out to be a nightmare commute home for those driving along West Bay. They didn’t not divert the traffic on west bay road to the by pass. instead, halfway between Calico Jacks and Gecko they put a yellow tape across the road which completely stopped traffic. Understanable, traffic with no where to go, got backed up to the Ritz. Several police cars drove past what must have been several hundred cars backed up, and rather than take the initiative to divert cars to the bypass on three roads available they chose to go to the accident, by which time was well and truly a non-issue, and stood around watching a car being put on a tow truck. they should have been standing on the road directing traffic. quite frankly unbelievable
How can someone flip a car at that busy time of evening? Speed MUST be the cause – or not?
