Rock thrower arrested

| 03/07/2009

(CNS): Police said today that they have made an arrest in connection with reports of rock throwing at cars on the East-West Arterial road in Savannah and that the investigation is continuing. Although police have refused to give any details regarding the individual who was arrested on suspicion of missile throwing and criminal damage, CNS understands that the suspect is a juvenile. At least three vehicles have been damaged by rocks and the incident was brought to wider public attention this week by local activist Sandra Catron.

At least one of the incidents took place on 1 July, and according to Catron, when police were first told they seemed reluctant to investigate. “I was with one of the victims when they were waiting for the police to attend following their call but they did not seem to be taking the incident very seriously,” said Catron who had issued an email alert and contacted the local media as she was aware of at least three cars being hit and other people who had seen the rocks being thrown.

“This is an exceptionally dangerous thing to do and I was concerned that the police were not acting on this,” Catron added. “I think anyone who has seen this or has had their car damaged should contact the police with the details so that these youngsters, and one witness believed it was young people, can be held accountable and pay for the damage.”

Acting Chief Superintendent Marlon Bodden today denied that the police had not taken the reports seriously: “We are taking these reports very seriously and will pursue all lines of enquiry until we have caught all those involved,” he added.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Sergeant Ian Lavine on 526 0661.

Anyone with information about crime taking place in the Cayman Islands should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling Crime Stoppers remain anonymous and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000 should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.

This is so dangerous! I hope these children be punished! Youth dont have anything to do rather than getting in trouble, government needs to focus more in the coming generation.

Sandra Cantron I salute you, even though I never voted for you, I always believe that Bodden Town needed someone like you and Theresa in the house to get the job done.  If you do run again in 2013 I will definetly give u my vote.   Now that has been said, this kid could had killed someone with those rock throwings.  This should be consider a very serious matter and that child should be dealt with accordinly.  The parents are to be responsible for not looking to their children, when these kids are out of school they should find something  for them all to do.  How about picking up a book and read kids?  How about going out to look for a summer job?  Trust me if that was my child first he would get an A$$ whooping, and then I will make him get a job immediately to pay off for every vehicle he has damage and deal with the consequences the law gives him. These young people these days are too out of order and if they do the crime, then they will do the time.

How do you know he was not caught red-handed?

I agree with Bad headline’s comment and completely diagree with Anonymous 8.11….I think you should re-read the headline and then have a think about what it is saying.

Of course it implies guilt. it says ‘Rock Thrower arrested’ – therefore it is saying that the person arrested IS THE ROCK THROWER, not that somebody has been arrested on suspicion of throwing rocks. It is calling the arrested man ‘the rock thrower’ even though he has not been charged yet or indeed proved that he threw rocks.

    A technicality but still un-accurate.

CNS: Can you get an update on the situation with the rock throwing in BT? Has that case been closed? Can you ask for the official report?

CNS: I’m sure we’ll get an update if the suspect is charged.

How does stating that someone was arrested – which is a factual statement per the poice’s report and how it’s said imply guilt?

Why do we have to show our ignorance people? A person is arrested means just that – NOTHING ELSE.

A police report is filed – remember this one in relation to Sandra? Gee … was there not a huge presumption on the part of most of you? Something that DID NOT even warrant an arrest or significant investigation?

No need to make something out of something that does not exist. It’s standard terms. Get a life.

  7. Bad headline? says:

The headline implies the guilt of the person who was arrested.

There was also an incident in the US where someone was killed when a kid dropped rocks off an overpass. They kids may not realize how dangerious their behavior is but I sure hope when this goes to court they receive the maximum penalty allowed.

The parents are also to be held responsible for any damage done – I wholeheartedly agree with that – so please make sure to make them pay for damaged vehicles also.

On a personal note – Sandra, God bless you for doing this. Some people may not appreciate your calling or why you have a "big mouth" but clearly you are using it for the benefit of all. Again, I know that your car was not damaged by these rocks but still you chose to speak out about it. Thank you very much for your unwavering dedication to the issues in Cayman. I’m sorry you did not get into office because I believe you would have been able to do a lot to help the people of Bodden Town and the Cayman Islands.

    Keep the faith!

    Diane

    Remember this incident in Germany?

Three U.S. teens convicted in German rock-throwing deaths

It’s lucky for everyone including the suspects that this has been nipped in the bud before someone gets seriously hurt.

Sandra my car was hit several weeks ago but I thought it was an isolated incident. It was not until I saw your email that I realized how wide spread this situation was.

Now I wish I had reported it to the police – CNS, is it too late to do this?

Sandra – Thank you for your continued efforts in this community! We appreciate you very much.

    Thank you Sandra.

I am glad that the police have made an arrest and are pursuing other leads and I commend them for their actions . However I am not sure that they would have done so as quickly or perhaps even at all without the heightened public awareness that Sandra brought about. Citizen action such as Sandra’s can get results. Now lets go after the rest of the criminals who are damaging our islands.

    Great Job Sandra…

Even though she was not elected, she is still doing her role as a good citizen.   The police did not take this seriously.  I for one know that this was laughed at by the police until Sandra got on their case.   I am sure if she was on their backs when the incidents were happening on Kipling Street they would have made an arrest there too to get her off their back.

Keep up the good work Sandra!!!!  XXXXXXX   The rate that our young people are growing up before their time…they need to be treated as adults.  They are doing dangerous things out here in Cayman.  This is definately the island I grew up in back in the 70’s
