Police make Quik-cash arrest

| 20/10/2009

(CNS): Updated —  Police have now confirmed that two men have been detained and are helping them with thier enquiries regarding the Quik-Cash armed robbery last month. According to the owner of the Shedden Road store, Delroy Howell (left), three men who were believed to be involved in the armed heist returned  to the store this morning. Police said, however, that they received a call from a member of staff at the store who said they had seen two men they thought they had recognised from the 23 September robbery.

Howell told CNS that he could not believe what was happening and said he never believed he would see the day when such things would happen in Cayman. Howell also said he believed the young men involved in the robbery last month who returned today were young men from the West Bay area.

Police said that no robbery or attempted robbery had taken place today and did not say what the two men were arrested for.

So far police have offered no further informaiton or updates about any of this weekend’s armed robberies or on the status of the murder enquiry regarding the fatal shooting of Fabian Ried on Tuesday evening in Newlands.

Anyone with information about crime taking place in the Cayman Islands should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling Crime Stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.

Why does it matter where these young men are from? Jamaican, Caymanian or from the moon it makes no difference.  A bad seed can be from anywhere.  Perhaps if some citizens of Cayman were slower to point the finger at the non-borns and quicker to come together on things crimes like this could be solved faster.

If this is a border control issue then it matters a great deal. That informs how we tackle the law enforcement issue. For example, does it require stricter visa controls, cameras at the airport, implementation of fingerprinting? None of suggests that many criminals are not homegrown. For that we must adopt other strategies. Why is it that you think that burying your head in the sand out of political correctness is a good strategy?

CNS: Please advise why you have yet to post my comments relevant to this matter?  I did have an internal reflection on what i said…and while totally against the grain and may appear counter-productive, they are uniquely my opinion or view.  I did not think it was liable in substance; however, you reserve your right and I respect this but would like to know your reason(s).  thanks.

      Hi Johnny

Sorry I don’t always look at the names while I’m going through comments so I can’t say why I didn’t approve yours in particular. Quite a few were not approved for this story. I have to be careful with the comments when someone has been arrested not to allow ones that indicate in any way that they are guilty. They are suspects only unless and until they have been convicted. There were also contradictory reports at first as to whether this was a robbery or not. They police say not. Does that help? You can always email me here.

        Thanks, Nicky.

The gest of what I said was: The entire story sorrounding Quick Cash original robbery and this " I believe I see the two men who robbed us" is a bit hanky panky for me.  The bold statements by the owner was too quick off the tongue for me.

I also said: because of my skeptism of the entire event, I hope these two local guys are not being blamed as a scapegoat and to appease a major customer segment of that establishment, given the accusations by many of their belief that, if they were robbed, it was likely people most familiar with that establishment (Guest workers).

Delroy – hopefully you know every other district young men in order for you to pin them to west bay district.  not to say that it wasnt someone from west.  to be honest, it is sad to say that it doesnt matter what district they are from.  it is happening in Cayman.

The Police wants you to work and partner with them in solving crimes, they want you to call with information about everything you know, yet when they have information they clam up about it.

I’m not asking them to give us details that would prejudice ongoing investigations or send us the plans for their next sting operations, however, I do believe that it is a two way street and if we the public are expected to have open communication lines and assist, the least they can do is give a propper press statement to the relevant news organization to let us know whats going on.

Give us the facts, if you have persons who have confessed or if you’ve found incriminating evidence, let us know, a lot of people are on pins and needles wondering if they are going to be the next victim. A bit more information would probably allow a few of us at least a good night’s rest.

Disclose all criminal identity by way of poster sketches on every light post, tree trunk, hand-out , on CNS and on TV whenever they are not wearing a hood over their face.  We had an arm robbery on Friday where the victims gave a discription, seeing that the robbers were bare faced.  The police needs to start disclosing these sketches to the public and maybe someone will come forward.  Lordknows that if these guys at Quick Cash are proven the guilty ones, then their identity should quickly be diclosed. don’t have a hang-your-head-down slow moving mug shot on CITN.  We need to see their full face photo on the front page.  That should quickly jog some memories and maybe people would remember who and where their hang out spots are and lead the police to that area to do further checks for other potential or previous criminals.

Sounds like weak identification evidence. Unless they are able to get incriminating evidence through interrogation it is unlikely to result in any criminal charge.

It is too quick to draw any conclusions about who is committing these crimes (altho that is what Delroy no doubt hoped to convey by his comment that they are from WB). We do not know whether there are a number of groups or a single group, for example.  Perhaps we can check with acquaintances whether they are adept at assuming Jamaican accents.

If these are the guys LEAN on them to find out.. how and where.. they got the guns.

  9. Serve Justice says:

Finally someone did something about the crime – note it was not through investigation – this was an alert employee.  Oh well, baby steps I guess.

Now, if this does turn out to be them, then they need to be made an example of.  Don’t let this take as long as most cases to come to court.  Criminals sit for years, yes, plural, years, before justice is rendered.

THis is the time to act swiftly, make an example, lock them up and throw away the key.

And for all you Jamaicans out there who have taken the rap for this recent crime wave, smile a little smug smile (enjoy it, don’t rub it in) – this was our own home-grown set of reprobates.  Not to say that foreigners don’t commit crimes, but we Caymanians are too proud to admit it possibly be our own.  So for once, the foreigners really are not the problem.

Whoops – think we just shattered a pane in our little glass castle…

Excuse me? "Young men from the West Bay area" does not mean they are Caymanian-although of course they might be. But be careful with comments like that. "Young men from the Bodden Town area" would almost certainly be from Ja as there is almost nothing but Jamaicans in BT nowadays.

      • Serve Justice says:

Time will tell and apologies will be gracefully accepted.

I am sure you realise that if they were Jamaican, in all likelihood, they would have used the standard description – "Jamaican Nationals".

So I am going to stand by my initial comment on the grounds of reading into what was NOT said as much as what was…

I will stand to be corrected…

        • Anonymous says:

Tha police do not normally identify any nationality at the stage of arrest, only if charged. Note that the police has not said that they were Caymanian which they normally do when charges are made. Mr. Howell has implied that by his statement. Interesting that he chose to do that.

  10. Thankful says:

Something not addin up with this story.

Howell also said he believed the young men involved in the robbery last month and the attempted robbery today were young men from the West Bay area.

What does the above statement mean?  How does he know this?

CNS: were you contacted by Mr. Howell or did you call them?  Why does the Police not know about this or cannot confirm an attempted robbery at Quick Cash this morning?!  The last incedent it was obvious by everyone that something was going on…just by the Police.

I know we waiting on details but I smell a little squab or prup-prup…in other words fishy.

CNS: We contacted Mr Howell. There hasn’t been any further clarification or information from the police – we’d all like to know more details but they have been very sketchy from the RCIPS.

  11. If Only says:

So how does the owner know these are the same robbers that did over Quik Cash last time around?  Unless able to clearly identify them both times around, I would have thought this is a bit of a brazen statement to be making at this point in time.  Still, I’ll wait to see what (and if) the police have to say before making any judgment calls.
