Armed holdup at mini-mart

| 04/12/2009

(CNS): A lone robber made off with an undisclosed sum of money after threatening a woman working at the Meringue Town Mini Mart in Boilers Road, George Town, last night with what appeared to be a handgun. About 11.10pm on Thursday, 3 December, a man entered the store, showed his gun to the 22-year-old mini-mart employee and demanded cash. The suspect was last seen running towards Walkers Road. He is described as being about 6 feet in height, heavy build with a dark complexion. He was wearing a black long-sleeved t-shirt, blue denim jeans and black sneakers.

He was also wearing dark coloured gloves, described as being similar to gardening gloves and was carrying what appears to be a handgun. No-one was injured as a result of the incident, and no shots were discharged. However, the woman was left shaken by the ordeal.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to call George Town CID on 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).

Lets face it, until the laws are changed to allow people to give evidence without fear of being identified nothing will change.

Well, to take one of the silly points of view (regarding who is largely responsible for crime) to its obvious and ultimate climax:

There was no crime in the Cayman Islands until people came along; and crime greatly increased with the advent of Caymanians.

    • Anon says:

Most of the problems in the Cayman Islands could be solved by getting rid of the Caymanians.

Sorry, I don’t really hold this view; I took the idea from another post sometime back. I admit I am making mischief, but there is a gain of substance in this statement.

Ok so maybe unemployment is the reason for all these recent crimes, but who do we have to blame? well i’m blaming Immigration Department, why are they granting all these work permits,??? lets take the Ritz Carlton for a perfect example…..what are the percentage of Caymanians working there? let me tell you Total Caymanians #153, Total married to Caymanian # 22 Total Permanent Residen # 25 and Total work permits # 584 ( Dont worry where i got that information from just know that its, what it is) so now tell me, why are they even here? what are they offering the Cayman society? they dont even give business to the local merchants, they bring people in to install new carpet, they bring people in to service there tennis courts. They bring people in for Administrative Assistance positions, they spend fortunes on work permit fees just because they would rather recruit people from overseas than look into our local community, no wonder nobody showed up at there recent Job fair, so with all this being said, we know what the problems are, but who are we to blame our own government! because there allowing our island to be taking over by people that think they can come into your own country and change the rules, and run you out of your own job because they have there best friend, sister cousin back home that needs a job! I see where cayman is heading in another 10 years and God help all of us! You know the recent crimes is anything, lets check in out in the years to come, and where will the work permit holders be when our island has gone down the dumps, they will take there asses back to there country with all the money they saved up over the years they were here SIMPLE!  "And by the way this is a message from a 26 year old caymanian" ummm imagine i feel this way already!

"Dont worry where i got that information from just know that its, what it is"

If you have access to this information and publish it here then you are a disgrace. I would never have you working for me and I would not like to do business with anybody that employs you either.

So once again we have a CAYMANIAN that thinks the ONLY qualification to get a job in Cayman is to be CAYMANIAN!  I hear the Goverment is still hiring CAYMANIANS and you just have to be able to pick up your check.  Quick while they still have enough borrowed money to hand out.

This crime wave is desired by the powers that be because we will naturally cry out for protection. Bingo! and Gotcha!

Who said caymanians weren’t stupid? Too busy trying to get out of debt.

  7. Bull Crap, there is no more crime under the UDP than the PPM, so stop flapping your gums, we need to step up to the plate and report what we see going on in our own back yards, I am sick of hearing "I know for  a fact" statements that Joe Blow has this weapon and yet you do nothing about it, be a responsible citizen and act the part.

"No more crime under the udp than under the PPM"? ARE YOU SICK, ARE YOU BLIND? Where on earth are you living? You may be a dumb blind follower of the udp, maybe even a member of the udp, but get real girl, because if you think that crime is no worse now than it was 6 months to a year ago then you really are blind, dumb & sick. May GOD have mercy on your pitiful soul girl, because you are LIVING IN DENIAL. Please wake up, life is passing you by!

      • Anonymous says:

Are you two lunatics(16:18 & 22:03) suggesting that crime would be alot lower if the PPM government had retain power ? If i laugh a going throw up and i just had my tasty Sunday dinner thus i can’t afford to laugh at you two brainless simpletons. There is no secret that crime has increased over the last 5-7 months but to blame the UDP is nothing but ignorance! The PPM leader operated Cayman just like how he operated the FAILED Hampstead Ltd.The crime hike is here now because of the failed policies of the PPM,we all should thank God that the PPM lost the elections, can you all imagine what would happenhad those jokers won?Caymanians would migrate like never before. You two need to remove the darkers from your eyes and support a better way forward for this country!!

        • Anonymous says:

madam 18:24, not only are you the lunatic, you are a hypocritical lunatic. When the PPM was the government you & your udp cohorts blamed them for the crime at the time. Now that the PPM are no longer the government & the UDP are, you & your blind lackies are still blaming the PPM. The UDP refuse to take any blame for the rise in crime, yet they have been in power for over 6 months! How long do unna hopeless bunch of knumbskulls want before you actually start accepting that the UDP are now the government? There is no one else but Bush, & no other party than the udp to blame for our social problems & the rise in crime. The crime is a direct result from the 3000 & MORE status grants that were given away by the udp in 2003! No other single act has contributed more to our social ills & the rise in crime THAN THOSE 3000 status grants, & if even you do not see & understand that, well then I assume that you are more blind that your UDP is! Please go back under your rock, life will look better to you under there girl.

im still trying to figure out how this could be caused by a political party…hhhmmm beats me

    • Anonymous says:

"Bull Crap" wake up out of your UDP induced drug that has you blind. NEVER Before has the crime reached the appalling levels they have reached since MAY 2009 and that is the date that udp took over running (and what a poor job they are doing) our Beloved Isles Cayman. There is nearly an armed robbery a day nowadays and that is not a coincidence, wake up man!

SO WHERE ARE THE PICTURES OF THIS GUY IF THEY HAD CCTV?

  9. Anonymous says:

This is all a symptom of the social problems that exist in this country. As more people become unemployed and frustrations rise these types of behaviours will increase, that is the sad reality. There are those of us who saw this coming over 15 years ago and we raised our concerns over the years but successive political "leaders" were not listening. They still arent – there is a lot of hearing going on but not much listening.

    • Anonymous says:

What concerns did you raise over the past 15 years that successive political leaders ignored???

That schools were turning out graduates who couldn’t read or write?

That it was cheaper for Caymanian employers to hire expat labor who they could bully than their fellow Caymanians who they feared would become future competition?

Maybe it isn’t too late to fix the system?

    • Anonymous says:

Yes, social problems caused by those terrible 3000 status give aways! That is the root cause of all our social problems

You read the contributions to this thread and they are the same responses given to previous armed robberies another clean escape with no witnesses and the time honored rule of "crime does not pay" seems broken in the Cayman Islands.

What angers me as usual are all the people who know who have firearms and refuse to do a damn thing about it.

More people will be robbed and killed and people will blame the RCIP and those same people here will keep their criminal secrets and get what they deserve.

This sucks down here, i am going to the moon.

Didn’t the Police report that 4 persons were arrested for the armed-robbery at the Texaco Gas Station on Walkers Road. If so, that means these are not the same people and therefore we have a major job in trying to capture all the burgulars roaming Caymans streets!

      • Anonymous says:

Rumours have it that a gun was found on a door step of a house  somewhere around the area of the gas station. This poor old lady that opened her door and saw that must have passed out. If this is true, what more do we have to put up with?

    • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

There are far more problems on the moon than crime…  Anyhow, don’t worry; someone might just put a stop to those criminals soon.

      • Anonymous says:

Dennie, I wish you were right but I can’t see this getting fixed.  There’s a tipping point beyond which society can’t stop it’s own fall, and I fear Cayman has gone beyond that point.  They population that is exposed to these criminals such as to be able to provide usefulinformation about them don’t want to; they prefer to live surrounded by crime.  I would normally buy a gun for defence, but then again, as a professional why would I live such that I might find myself in a gunfight?  Of course, as an expat I don’t expect the powers that be would allow me to have one.  That left one choice, and for the critics and the cynics, I won’t let the airplane door hit me in the ass on Tuesday when I fly out.  I have loved it here, and it is very sad to leave.  To those that remain: don’t let the bad guys take over your country.  Find the strength to fight back.

Another hold up, another escape on foot and again no-one sees a thing.  WOW.  Oh well, black t-shirted jean man (fat or thin) will turn up again tomorrow at a mini mart or gas station near you, make sure you turn your back!!

  13. Anonymous says:

"6 feet in height, heavy build with a dark complexion. He was wearing a black long-sleeved t-shirt, blue denim jeans and black sneakers."

That narrows it down to >20,000 people, thanks.

Sorry if I don’t have more sympathy for the victims.  All business owners running a cash business need to wake up and join the modern world.  Have a time lock drop safe, update your controls, and use CCTV so the public and police can have a chance of catching these goons.

    • Anonymous says:

The store was not closed at that time, and the owners has a time safe dropbox and CCTV. so get is right.

    • Anon says:

      20, 000 – NO

      I know it’s a bit simplistic, but let’s think.

The total population is about 50,000. The blagards are male, so we are down to 25,000 straight away. They are black, and in their twenties or thirties. There can only be about 5,000 people on the island that could possibly be the guys that are causing all the crime. This is based on the most obvious public domain data. With what the police actually know and not passing on, the candidate list is possibly in the dozens, maybe a hundred.

The police probably know exactly who they are, but will not arrest them; why?
      • Anonymous says:

You make good points but your estimate of population is either way too low or the Caymanian people are almost extinct.

        Work permit holders                        23,000

        Dependants                                       4,000

        Permanent Residents                       3,000

        Medical students etc.                        1,000

        Recent status recipients                   2,000

        Cabinet recipients                             3,000

        Families of cabinet recipients          7,000

        Overstayers etc.                                 1,000

        Expats in Govt. Service                     2,000

Families of Expats in Govt. Service 1,000

                                                                     47,000

Leaves room for only 3,000 people she were Caymanian 6 or more years ago.

        No wonder we have problems.

Uhmm! Black long sleeved T. Shirt and jeans.  Sounds like this man has not changed his clothes yet from the Tuesday robbery of Tortuga Funds.  Oh, sorry, this one is fat.   But he could run fast though.

No body cannot tell me that evey body is not sleeping, drunk or bewitched.  No body sees anything.  Good gracious, these robbers  must be supermen.

Anyway, I guess the same thing will be tomorrows headlines again unless some mad man with a machette chop off the Gun-hand.  Stay safe, lock your doors and look out for all tall slim or fat men with long sleeved black T. Shirt.
