Victim reveals ordeal of armed home invasion

| 23/01/2010

Cayman Islands News, Grand Cayman local news, Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Crime in Cayman(CNS): A woman who was one of three victims of an armed robbery that took place at a condo complex on Seven Mile Beach, West Bay Road two weeks ago has spoken out about her terrifying ordeal and says she and her room mates are scared to go out. Like most of the armed robberies that havetaken place on the island over the last six months, no one has been arrested for the robbery in which, the woman told News 27, she and her room mates were assaulted. According to the television station, the police say that they are still working actively on this investigation.

Speaking with Tammi Sulliman on News 27, the victim tells the harrowing details of how five men invaded her home and how she feared for her life as the men beat her male room mate on the head with a pistol. Although there were three cameras on the complex, none of them caught the armed robbers as they entered or fled the area, and she believes that there needs to be more heightened surveillance on the site and along the West Bay Road.

“It’s happening to everyone; it can’t stay quiet, hush-hush; don’t talk about it because people need to know it’s not safe here anymore,” the victim said.

According to the original police report, the event took place at the Treasure Island Condo at around 11:45 pm.

These reports are breaking my heart!

I use to come to Grand Cayman from the United States once a month back in the 70’s and 80’s.  I remember staying at the Holiday Inn  or La Covia and having a perfect 4 day weekend of rest and relaxation. I felt like Cayman was "home" the Caymanians were friendly and I felt safe.  My husband and I visited a few times in the 90’s with our son and the Island had changed so much that we haven’t been back in 15 years. What happened to this beautiful place?

I grew up in the island we knew and loved where, not that long ago, we never bothered to lock our doors.   I now live in the island where I have many sleepless nights, wondering when it will be my family’s turn to be assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in our own "locked tight" home, where we feel less than secure.

Ah, isn’t progress wonderful, and what a price we’ve paid!

crime is going to get worse as long as the evil elements of the freemasons run the cayman islands……

I sympathize with this victim and apologize as a Caymanian for this experience in my country. That is not to say I necessarily believe that the majority of such crime is perpetrated by Caymanians alone.

The fact that there are so few posts on this heinous occurrence suggests that the public at large has given up hope for the Police to do anything definitive and effective to catch these and other criminals and to curb such crime in the future.

    What a sad day!

You cannot get justice in Cayman.  Leave at once.

agreed..leave at once, I have never seen such incompetence and racism. I just got a speeding ticket for a road way out in west bay…I was pulling out of my complex and was pulled over for speeding….insane..is this how they are spending their time? There was a driveby shooting last week in WB and this is how they spend their time…leave at once!!!

there are experienced and keen police officers who want to work here but the (principally) local ‘senior’ officers want to either keep them out, or throw them out… YOUR Police create YOUR Police force. Even if Baines is ‘the second coming’ he’ll struggle to beat the incestuous old boys network within the middle ranks of the Rcips

Thank you to the lady in the interview for speaking out. Any one of us could be next until our lazy politicians get off their fat a$$es and pass legislation that will punish the criminals and the police collectively get off their’s, get onto the streets and get the criminals off the street. Enough already.

There was talk a few weeks ago about organising a march to protest the lack of action by police and politicians alike. When is that supposed to happen?
