We need to teach our girls and boys to respect themselves and help them to develop strong self esteem.  And not to run around sleeping with Tom Dick and Harry and if they do, use birth control.  there is no need for our kids to be having kids.    However, many young girls get involved with men who turn out to be charming and turn out to be controlling and abusive.  Once you are in a relationship with children it is not so easyto get out of it.  Cayman is a small place to hide from a violent abusive partner.  I worked with a divorce lawyer for several years and have had client’s husbands calling and threatening me with all sorts of things when I would not tell them whether or not their wife was there.  I’ve also seen women who left their husbands and ended up in hospital from the beating their so called "loved ones" give them when they get the opportunity.  This is another big problem in Cayman.  Its hard enough in a big country where you can move to another state or city.  Here you’re a sitting duck.  I think a lot of men/boys especially don’t know how to take "no" for an answer because they are not taught even basic boundaries.  This becomes a real problem when they are grown.    Kids with parents who don’t protect and gude them, don’t know their own value, feel worthless and act appropriately.  If you don’t want to spend at least 18 years making many many sacrifices for your kids, then don’t have them.  They are not someone else’s responsibility.  Teachers can do nothing with them if you dont do the ground work and teach them to respect themselves and others.  Life is hard.  No one is entitled to anything much that they are not prepared to work for.   Teach your kids that early in life.

We need to offer our girls the choice of an abortion too.  Broken families, teenage pregnancies and unwanted children all lead to violent crime.  You want to be brought up with low self-esteem?  Try being brought up by a mother who did not want you and resents you for ruining her life.

Ever wondered how your child ended up having (according to you) a reckless, heartless, gun-wielding thug for a father?

I am pretty certain that at some point in your life you found that man’s violent and thuggish attitude to be appealing, cute and sexy – today you complain about it.

A major part of Cayman’s societal problems is due to women just like you – but no one seems to want to touch that particular issue do they?

(Perhaps you should read my previous comment posted below?)

    ===========================================================

whodatis, don’t even bother trying to explain.  these "love-a thousand-thugs" girls know exactly from the very get-go who they’re dealing with…  it’s not like buddy comes talking to them in shakesperean english, dressed in a pressed suit, bearing chocolates and roses.  he’s the loser whose pants are barely above his knees, with a ganja spliff in one hand, a beer in the other, some dirty girl hanging all over him, and 5 different women calling him for alimony.  so they know.  they feel great when they’ve stolen the low-life from the other thug lovers…  they think that they’re going to change him…once they realize that they can’t change him and things start turning sour, that is when you start hearing the typical, "i didn’t know…blah blah blah" excuses.  of course they knew all along the type of person that their baby dadda was.  these guys are too frigging dumb to put up a front…  in fact, they don’t even care to put one on – they have plenty of dumb women ready and eager to nab-a-thug.

  3. On a slippery slope ... says:

Unfortunately my fellow CNS posters; its unlikely that the number is still "15" so-called gang members. This sort of activity draws in membership, the same way a casino lures the curious occasional gambler, or the corner bar attracts the weekend drinker… both ultimately become regulars and are lost to family and loved ones. Today’s youth have been fed a steady diet of violent video games, obscene music lyrics, and role models who thrive on promiscuity, gambling and a gangsta lifestyle.

I can see Gov’t trying to put the wheels in motion with the recent passing of the "anonymous witness" law, and hear that much more is planned… it’s likely a little too late, but I am hoping that it can stem the tide.

Its a slippery slope indeed …

We don’t need a Police Helicopter, we need a dirigible anchored permanently over West Bay.  The thugs there are terrorizing that community.

Why am I not surprised by your narrow minded response!!!! Firstly, who are you to JUDGE when you do not know the circumstances surrounding the situation!!! What gives you the impression that my baby father was a thug when I met him, remember thug life is not a quality you are born with, it is one that a person adapts after personal experiences or pair pressure!!!   As stated in my initial message, he is the father of my child, which means he has parental rights, so how dare you question, why my son was with his father to begin with!!! Your message gives me the impression, that you are the type of person that would not try to help young Caymanians who have gone a stray, you would rather sit there and stereotype them, instead of being your brothers keeper and reach out to them. This world needs more people that are willing to lookoutside the box and try to find a solution for the problem, so pointing fingers as to who’s the blame and criticizing ones decision or choices only makes matters worse. My point in sharing my personal experience is to make people aware that violence is taking over these islands, so we need to put a stop it in every aspect, so that we can all be safe!!!

    • whodatis says:

On a one to one level – you are absolutely correct – I know not the circumstances surrounding YOUR particular situation.

I can see how my initial post may have personally offended you, especially if what you are saying is in fact the case, and assuming that you are not a fibber – I do apologize (for the hurt feelings).

However, even if your situation is one out of the rarely excusable category – in the grand scheme of things – it is a bit irrelevant.

The fact remains that this dilemma extends far beyond any single case.

(See poster’s remarks at 18:46 for example.)

Regardless, I stand 100% behind my words when applied in a general sense.

Women get far too easy a pass today – especially with the "don’t judge me" garbage.

Is anyone "not judging" or supporting the role of the "thug" in Cayman society? No! Why should we treat his typical run-of-the-mill "baby mudda" any differently? The majority of them need to quit using their children as scapegoats.

Male thugs tend to end up in prison – "loosey-goosey" baby mothers tend to receive mommy’s support and often a check from the government to top it off. (Many a female Caymanian professional is forced to make that embarrassing drive to Northward Prison on birthdays and Christmas.)

Which is the properly functioning adult individual? I’m confused here.

Anyway – again I will cut this short as I know this topic is ALWAYS a pointless nosedive into mantras, mottos and clauses.

I’m appalled after reading 10:04 Whodatis’ posting. You mean to tell me we have convicted murders, twice convicted even, roaming our streets freely amongst us even shopping in baby stores? Why are these people not in prison? Convicted murders? Are you kidding me? They should be in prison for life shouldn’t they under our penal system, well I believe in capital punishment as a stronger deterrent, but walking the streets of Grand Cayman.

Cayman was so much nicer back in the day when there was only 10,000 of us Caymanian’s living in Cayman. Everybody knew everybody, cause an accident to stop and let you out, now try to get out onto a busy road.

The police commissioner needs to abandon the ole Elnglish ways of not carrying firearms. The thugs aren’t afraid of the police, they walk into night clubs and blow people away in front of many witnesses because they feel, and seem to be, above the law. Our police deserve the right to protect themselves as well as the public. In fact I agree with the recent motion in the LA to allow citizens to protect themselves as well. I am a highly trained  individual in the use of firearms who could responsibly own a firearm in my household for protection purposes, I’m not saying to carry, that should never be allowed. But at least allow the police to protect themselves and carry out their duties properly armed for the job.

In the U.S. the Constitution of the United States of America says "The people shall have the right to bear arms". We don’t have these same civil rights in Cayman.

The way to prevent firearms and drugs from entering our small country is to secure our borders. This means our shoreline with increased patrols by water (24/7) on all four corners, air support with night vision which has finally arrived (24/7), and Customs needs to examine each and every shipment into our islands without fail. This is a huge task but apparently is necessary. Hire more Customs agents? The country is broke but we must find a way.

This violence will keep on happening until our lazy politicians get off their back sides and pass legislation that does 3 things:

    doubles the minimum penalties for violent crime;

    ends the revolving door parole and bail systems that keep these violent criminals on our streets, committing more violence and intimidating people. There should be no parole for violent criminals, and bail should be very difficult to get for persons charged with any violent crime;

makes Northward into a place of punishment not a spa. That means no cell phones, no A/C, no take out food on demand, no TV, growing their own food and working to justify their release back into society.

Why do our politicians try to protect these violent criminals by refusing to do anything to punish them appropriately for the crimes that they are committing? What hold do the criminals have over our politicians?

Please members of the LA – We don’t need any more )$(*%#&$ committees. JUST DO IT.

I have to agree with 10:39 I have live in West Bay all my life and i ant no todays chicken but there is  NOT enough protolling  in these areas and for what reason  only God Knows. I’m sorry but the police need to make there self be none they have there bullet proof vest ok if they need extra ammo give it to them but instead of parking off empty cars to stop people driving thru a certain area please use those cars and protroll the areas that needs to be protrol  it would be much appreciated by the community. Because I for one could avoid going thru either of these areas i surely hell would  because thats the fear we have that we could be hit by a stray bullet at any time.

From you a young mans Point of view……

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.-Benjamin Franklin

We waste too much of our time blaming the police, government, media etc when we should be blaming ourselves. The quicker we accept blame the closer we are to having a safe Cayman. It seems like the easiest thing to do is to say "The police needs to do this, the police needs to do that!" How many people actually volunteer their time to the police to help out? How many would actually speak out against this gang violence publicly instead of turning a blind eye until its one of their own who are hurt or even worst killed? Lets all try to make Cayman safe people lets help our neighbors!

I say, lets send them to Afganistan since they like to shoot. I bet they wont last long over there.

BTW, how are these guns getting into our Islands??????

Is Customs not doing there job!?!?!?!

  15. Anonymous says:

The Police are at the wrong places, the wrong times. Instead of being parked on  West Bay Road for hours, go to the areas that these shooting are taking place.  If 15 names are on the Police file and known for these crimes, then park at their door mouth and stay there for hours. All the areas that the shootings are taking place just have 7 different police cars stationed at each area.  Its about 12 police cars that belong to the West Bay station anyway. If the Police doesnt have protection, get them their bullet proof and their ammo too. They are humans as well and need to be protected so help them protect themselves.  These shooting always take place the same areas. There is not enough protrolling. Weather the ploice wants to admit it or not. Because some innocent person could of been shot again last night just by innocently driving cross the area, going home, visting family, going shooping, getting something to eat, basketball, football etc. People do not even feel safe driving on the road anymore. This is a small Islands and should free to enjoy it and raise our children up feeling safe. That they can go by a friend house, go to football, basketball or just even take a ride on theri bikes. Come on now!!! POLICE PRESENTS ARE NEEDED!!!

I was anticipating that age old excuse of "do not judge her"!

That sentiment is destroying modern day society from within – and it ALWAYS pops up whenever WOMEN arebrought into the equation.

Has any single person on here said "judge not" in regards to the male thugs that are running wild all over this island creating havoc for all to endure? No!

It is all about being accountable for one’s actions and choices in life – except in the cases of thug chasing females as appears to be the case!

Until we understand that these types of females (and they are no longer a small minority!) are actually half of the problem in regards to the issues with young people today we shall continue to ride this ridiculous merry-go-round.

Anyway, I have made my point (and I am certain the ladies are armed and ready with their "thumbs downs" at this very moment). I will stop right here – hopefully we will start to open our eyes to what is right before us.

** By the way, in most instances – thugs beget thugs (and future thug chasing "baby muddas" as well". Females simply need to be more selective nowadays as these "mistakes", as you call them, are now costing us our normal way of life. **

    A Caymanian Tale

What annoys me is that in the past 10 years there have been at least 7 individuals arrested for gun or serious assault offenses that were KNOWN (to me, the entire student body, faculty, social dept. etc.) troublemakers, bullies, fight-starters and overall seriously disruptive classmates from as far back as grade school!

We see these guys coming from years down the road, so to speak, and it is extremely frustrating to see the same familiar names and faces causing the most unrest in the country.

For example I personally had serious bullying issues with an individual back in MIDDLE SCHOOL (15 years ago) – and for whatever reason this person went through the school system and was released into the general public. A few years ago said individual ending up KILLING an older gentleman friend of mine. When I learned of his (my friend’s) untimely death I was extremely disheartened – however, when I learned of his killer’s identity I became extremely angry!

Why was this individual even allowed to be out in the public, as I know for a fact that this person had NUMEROUS involvements and even arrests for drugs and assault prior to this incident!? Anyway, he was convicted and sent to prison for the crime.

    Life went on …

To make matters even worse, I happened to be in court one day, for reasons that shall not be disclosed, and coincidentally found myself in a face-to-face meeting with this very person. He knew who I was, I knew who he was, we were both fully aware of the long, overlapping and complex history between us. It was an awkward meeting to say the least. To no one’s surprise he was being brought to the court once again on a murder charge! Folks – this was about 4 years after the MURDER of my previously mentioned friend! Can you imagine my state of mind at this point?

However, again – life went on …

Up until recently I had not heard of or seen this individual for years, but as luck would have it – I ran into this person yet again.

This time it was in a kid’s toy and clothing store during the holiday season. I walked in and our eyes met – yet another awkward meeting.

Mr. Twice Convicted Murderer was in the cashier’s line with his "girlfriend / baby mudda’" – she was proudly cradling their child in her arms as he was struggling to keep a handle on what looked like three other presents – of course when it came time to pay he did the classic – "Oh I forgot to check out something else in the back of the store" move … leaving her to pay for their purchases – to which of course, she happily obliged.

I later learned that said individual has a minimum of three "baby muddas"!

(As God as my witness I say to you that all of the above is true.)

Are we paying attention? Are we taking notes?

Hopefully all of us will be able to spot the problems and shortcomings in our country contained herein.

    The End.

I for one really appreciate your sharing of your first hand experience as a member of a small community living with people of antisocial temperament.

In the small town that I grew up in there were whole families who were known as criminals where the fathers and then the children got into criminal activities.

In my opinion the article of this man’s experience in growing up in the Cayman community is the best use of this on line format.

It sort of saddens me to think that such antisocial people continue to roam free in this community.

Well said. I am a teacher of 30 plus years in our schools. The killers/gangstas of today were identifiable as early as primary school because of their off the wall out of control not accountable to anyone behaviour. There was never a "father" for us to turn to for help-he had long ago moved on to the next oh so willing woman. The mothers blamed the fathers (or the teachers) and were upset by the behaviour but could only beat the crap out of the kids until they got to the age when they beat the crap out of the mothers. Meanwhile there was a denial culture in the Portfolio and Department of Education so the schools got little sympathy. Every one of the Caymanian killers and violent criminals in Northward are known to long serving teachers. Nearly every single one was predicted to end up there. Gangs were being mentioned by the principals of the Middle and High Schools in the mid eighties. Noone outside the schools listened or chose to believe. We live with that now. Ah so it go.

whodatis, I’ve always liked you (meaning your internet postings – I have no idea who you really are).

Cayman needs a secret society of the "good" people of Cayman to take care of these problems early, in the only way that these problems can be taken care of.  You know what I mean.  Good luck.

        Take care.

Apparently a shooting was also in Windsor park, so why West Bay getting direct punches on last nights shootings?!?! I mean a shooting is a shooting. Take in mind West Bay seems to just be manufacturing guns all of a sudden, but still highlight us on CAYMANS happenings/shootings!!!

23:31; same thing I was thinking. Either that or go to a gun range and learn how to aim, because so far they’re all just missing their targets and hurting the innocents in the process of their ignorance. Seems like they have no common sense as to think what the outcomes will be, it’s obvious, when one start it, another ignorant one going continue.Seems like a never ending battle.

Simple fact and possible solution; they all need to be gathered up, ship out to some military camp where they have reason to use a gun; Cayman is not a war zone.

  27. Bert says:

I have another idea, why dont we send them to Iran, Itaq Afghanistan or sonme where in the middle east, there is constant gun fire over in those territories may be they could use these trigger happy ignorant morons that we have here shooting at each other missing and unfortunatley killing innocent children!!!

Great idea, we could let these losers fight instead of the good men and women over there now. The problem is, these thugs are spineless and weak. After one minute in a war zone they would be cowering like babies. Look how these degenerates act when arrested. I think parents of these losers should go to jail with them for creating the little wastes of space.

The police needs to have the authority to do on the spot random search of suspected gang members and drug dealers. Police with family members who are involved with GUNS, GANG and DRUG needs to stop informimg them of when and where a search is going to take place.  It only takes one phone call and every drug and gang member knows what is going on.  (HIDE YOUR GUNS AND DRUGS. THE POLICE IS DOING A SEARCH TODAY!) How are we going to get them off our streets if this doesn’t stop. THIS IS FACT.  I HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY POLICE.

    • Lachlan MacTavish says:

In hindsight the authorities in Los Angeles lamented that when the gang culture was developing they should have taken aggressive measures. Making "gangs" illegal. But political and public naysayers won out and 100,000’s of people have died, drugs and guns have polificated and now gangs are embedded so deap into this society that nothing can be done.

Cayman is a small environment. It isn’t to late…..abolish gangs and the culture which is drugs and guns. Instead of spending a trillion dollars on a dock for momontary tourists save your island and people Mr. Premier. …….ban gangs…..anonymous witnesses…..hasher sentences….trial by judge…..yes pay for defences and put these criminals away….double the budget for the police……hire expert consultants and foriegn police to work under the Commissioner…..shut down drugs and guns….STOP licencing guns……educate parents…..set up youth centres……provide councelling and social services that work with funding………

Do something about this problem before the gand/drug/gun culture is so embedded in Cayman that you can’t do anything about. Cayman will repeat Caribbean history if you just continue to dance around the issue.

No what the government needs to do is bring in some undercover "hit men" and put them on the street to take out these trouble makers and then send a clear message to other "wanna be ghetto gun men" that this is what will happen to them if they "uprise" again.

Why should we bother waste money trying to find them guilty and then house them and our expense in Hotel Northward – this is just throwing good money after bad. Just take them out. Dont even bother burying them – give them a set of cement shoes and dump them over the drop off.

Sounds cruel and hard I know but if something is not done you all are going to be living in fear for a long long long time. TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK

Sad that this is no longer "front page news".  If this were a printed news venue, this story would get page 3 of Part B in the back.  No one died, no innocent bystanders were hit, and the fact that a criminal is on an armed rampage doesn’t even warrant reporting these days.  The fact that they can’t shoot worth a damn might make the humour section.

This is how you raised your children West Bay.  Rejoice as you reap your crop.

I am a born and bred West Bayer and I take those comments very biased.  Is there only West Bayers that have gun shootings.

    • MonkeySee says:

What a sad generalisation of my beautiful district!

Its a terrible reality that to readers outside of Cayman and those in other districts, West Bay sounds like Liberty City  or Compton !!!

Trust me, its hard being a Baya right now…can’t walk the dog without looking over my shoulder and constantly worry about security for my children. Its sad, terrifying, and disheartening.

But the majority of people in WB are NOT gangsters…. yet some of these commenters make it seem like all Bayas must ‘take the rap’ for the upbringing of these fools! This is not 30 years ago when ‘the village’ was raising the kids…this is the time when many people don’t even know their neighbor’s name! And that is for ALL districts, and many places around the world, not just WB!

I’m glad that I don’t know these murders and wanna be thugs! Never even seen them on the streets!  But I have seen some of their kids in primary school & elsewhere and will always pray they don’t follow in their parents paths….

Why don’t we direct the ‘reap what you sow’ comments to the immedaite families and ‘baby muddas’ instead of the whole district?

And for those who know what your kin is up to, do something about it.  be part of the solution and not complacent in retaliation & further acts of violence.

I agree – round them all up, stick them in a bullet proof room with as many weapons and ammo as they like and let them have at it.  Then lock up whoever is still standing for the rest of his days.

I agree with you 23:31. I awoke this morning to learn that there was an apparent drive by shooting on the same road I live on (which is in George Town)! The police had the area taped off and then I also learnt that there were two shootings in West Bay. Time to stop talking and stop with the petty road blocks. Start knocking down doors RCIP! You know who the majority of these thugs are.

So the Premier is building a big wall around his personal property at our expense, has Los Vegas style lighting on his property at our expense, and has police guarding him 24/7 at our expense, and in any event he is mostly out of the country at our expense, so he clearly is sleeping well at night and has no interest in bringing in new laws to lock up these criminals and make the rest of us safer. I don’t understand the need for all of this special security as I would have thought that by refusing to pass laws to lock up the criminals for a very long time, he would have nothing to fear from them anyway.

It is an outrage that these politicians are using our money to improve their personal lifestyles but not ours. What incentive do they have to make the people’s lives better when they can simply look out for themselves at our expense?

They have no right to be safer than the rest of us, particularly when they are doing nothing to increase the penalties for violent crime, nothing to make Northward into a place of punishment for criminals rather than a spa, and nothing to end the revolving door parole system for violent criminals.

How many more children must die Mr. Premier?

Unfortunately I suspect that Caymanians, and our guests, will have to get accustomed to the gunshots, as many of our Caribbean neighbours have had to do, as it is a component of that thing called "progress".
