Couple shocked at audacious burglary

| 12/03/2010

(CNS): While break-ins are no longer making the news these days as they have become almost everyday events, one couple living on Seven Mile Beach told CNS they were shocked when a burglar broke into their condo and stole a number of valuables from right under their noses as they both slept. While the gang crime maybe stealing the headlines, this theft still stole the victim’s peace of mind.  The couple who live in the Lizard Run area said they woke up on Thursday morning to find the window open and a number of possessions gone along with cash and some medication.  As a result the couple said they have now installed a new security system.

“We believe the burglar tore off the screen, jimmied the window, propped his body inside the unit and stole whatever was in reaching distance,” said the couple. “The burglary occurred during the early hours of Thursday morning while we were sleeping 10ft away from the window.”

The couple said aside from the cash and medication the burglar made off with a silver ‘The Sak’ purse and a pink Coach change-purse. They had called the police who dusted for prints and found more than one set. The audacity of the burglar however, has unnerved the couple who said they took immediate action that day and have now installed a security system.

At a recent crime prevention road show, the police teamed up with local security firms to spread the word about putting a stop to such opportunistic burglaries. Security experts all agree that this is exactly the kind of crime that can be prevented with an inexpensive alarm system.

“People don’t realize how much of a deep sleep they can be in and how easy it is for a burglar to do this kind of thing,” said Frank Brennan of the Security Centre. “While an alarm may not always prevent a burglar from trying to get in to yourproperty, but a security system can often act as a deterrent , it will make property owners more aware about closing the windows and doors before going to bed and if the burglar still tries once an alarm goes off he is likely to run or you the owner are at least likely to wake up.”

Brennan said while alarms or any other measure can never stop criminals from trying having a system means your home will be less likely to be a target.

CNS….please start to name and shame the persons arrested or detained.  Yes detained, innocent people can clear their own names.

CNS: The police do not release the names of people arrested, only those that are charged.

So sorry to see what these islands are coming to.  An alarm is a very good investment and will bring peace of mind.  If you can a "Dog" is an even better investment and many good dogs are available at the Humane Society for adoption, they will assist the police by taking a bite out of criminals, thus crime.

Drug addiction, unnecessary unemployment and poor immigration work are all equal to SOCIAL PROBLEMS- WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT BESIDES KEEPING EXPAT IN JOBS with the increase in SOCIAL PROBLEMS.

Yeah imagine there being no expats and thus no Work permit fees for Government.

Then the CS will have to take a 80% pay cut and you would have only 10% of the professionally qualified accountants need in the private sector, so bye bye the companies leding to further Caymanian unemployment.

I know it’s monday morning but try engaging your civil service brain before breakfast

If this idiot believes that this was an expat then they are obviously in need of some medication.  I say to the Caymanians that are always complaining about expats to just shut up and dont comment.  I am a Caymanian of nearly 50 years old and I only ask that my countrymen wonder where the hell we would be without the contributions of expats to our society and economy.  The only solution is to not allow immigration at all and leave these islands to subsist on Caymanian birth right alone.  Lets see where we would be then.  We would indeed be the "islands that no one ever  knew existed"  Just shut up you morons!!!!

CNS, please keep us updated on all crime.  With the way things are going maybe we need a weekly breakdown of crime; burglary, shooting, murders, etc.

US Newspapers have a police blotter section that lists all reported crime, nature of the offense, time, and address.

There’s even a public website devoted to it — shows all the mugshots and a copy of the police report!

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe some reporters used to carry a police scanner so they could follow the activity and be on the spot.

This appears to be an operation of only a handful of people and I think they are doing a fine job of reporting under the circumstances. Perhaps you would like to volunteer to carry a scanner?
