Forbes takes Cayman flag to Qatar

| 12/03/2010

Cayman Islands News, Grand Cayman sports news(CNS): One of Cayman’s Olympian athletes, Ronald Forbes, is in Doha, Qatar to participate in the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Indoor Championships that kick off today, Friday, 12 March 2010. He will compete in the 60m hurdles. Round one of this event is scheduled for the opening day. His personal best in this race is 7.58 seconds, and his qualifying time for Doha was 7.74 seconds. Ronald ran for Cayman in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and in the 110m high hurdles event in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Forbes made it to the quarterfinal in the Olympics but toppled the last hurdle in the race. He finished the second round with a time of 13.72 seconds and an overall ranking of 26 out of 30 hurdlers. He was the flag-bearer for his nation during the opening ceremonies of those games.

He is currently training at his alma mater, Florida International University.

“We wish Ronald well and hope he will be able to clock a new personal best time but regardless, we are proud that he will be carrying the Cayman flag in Doha. Although we have few elite athletes at present, they do play an important part in developing sport in Cayman, both as role models and ambassadors,” said Sports Minister Mark Scotland.
