Fisherman’s body found

| 20/03/2010

(CNS): Police have confirmed that the body a 70-year-old man has been recovered after the wreckage of a small boat was washed up in West Bay. Police said that shortly after 3.20 this afternoon, Saturday 20 March, they were informed that wreckage from a small fishing boat had been washed up on the shore close to Sand Hole Road, West Bay. Police immediately launched a sea and air search involving the RCIPS Marine Unit and Rescue One. A short time later the body of a man was located by Rescue One, approximately 150 yards from where the wreckage had been found.

Local divers and snorkelers assisted police to bring the body back to shore. It is believed that the man, who was from the West Bay area, went out fishing alone around 6.00 am this morning. Police said that enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Condolences to this mans family and friends.

Why is it that people drown in Cayman?  Shouldn’t all boaters be wearting life jackets (the ones that automatically inflate seem resonable and are unobtrusive).

Sad for someone to lose their life this way.  Please stay safe!

Oh, and don’t rely on the weather man, he doesn’t even have a meteorological degree.

Are we really blaming the weatherman for this? He reports the weather he doesnt create it! Regardless the Port Authority gives more accurate weather information to boaters, so everyone should check with them before venturing out.

Condolences to this mans family and friends. May God ease your pain.

Do you actually think the ole time fisherman watch John Foster???  They look at the sky the night before, they check the winds and the current before they leave, they look for the birds out at sea… John Foster can’t tell you what Mother Nature can.  It is sad that this fisherman is no longer with us, but he died doing what he loved to do and for a life long fisherman – that is the best way to go.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.  Tight Lines in Heaven!

My Condolences to this man’s family.  I hope that he went peacefully from natural causes doing what he loved.

The weather is unpredictable, and this gentleman was likely a seasoned fisherman, with good knowledge of sea conditions.  John Foster can only report what the weather services give him, and from what I have seen on Day Break urges boaters to use caution.

None-the-less, I hope he is smiling in heaven, and catching a big one with the man upstairs.

weather forcasting has got to improve here….

friday morning: john foster was on telling us about the beuatiful conditions outside and said great boating conditions were expected…… what followed was a day of rough seas and the sea swim planned for sat being cancelled… and now someone has died…

In all honesty and fairness to John Foster…I know the gentleman – kind, caring man, and is an eye-witness to unfolding event on saturday.

I seriously doubt that he views much less listens to John Foster’s reports.  He goes to the sea shore like most Caymanian sea and fishermen, especially the elderly men, they look at the skies, wind direction and strength and the seas and makes their own determination.  They are very good at it and can match any meterologist prediction.

The gentleman normally uses no engine and paddles a few hundred yards offshore just by the reefs.  What appeared to have happened is that the wind and seas made down rather quickly.  I believe something sadly happenedto him (heart-attack, fatigue) that affected his ability to respond quick enough, or one of the quickly developed rolling waves flipped his small aluminum boat, which then caused him some destress that ultimately led to him drowning.  Either way, it is sad.

Prayers to all his children, spouse and loved ones.  Knowing who he is in our west bay community, he will be missed.  May his soul rest in peace.
