Cayman shaken by tremors

| 18/04/2010

(CNS): Updated Sunday 10 am — The earth was shaking yet again in the Cayman Islands’ region on Saturday night after two small tremors with epicentres less than 100 miles away occurred south of Grand Cayman. According to the US Geological Survey, the first quake, a magnitude of 4.8 was located 95 miles south of George Town, 6 miles deep and happened at around 8:30 pm local time. The second came around two hours later at 10:25 pm some 85 miles south southwest of the capital, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale and again about 6 miles down. Since the beginning of the year, when Cayman was shaken by a 5.9 earthquake with an epicentre some 30 miles away on 19 January, there have been around a half dozen further smaller tremors.

Given the distance from the tremor there were no reports of damage. Owing to technical difficulties with the main government server, Hazard Management apologised for being unable to post details until Sunday morning, but they have now confirmed that there was no damage reported.

However, the HMCI reminded the public that Cayman is situated on the edge of a fault region and they must be prepared to protect themselves in the event of a more significant earthquake.

DATES FROM & TO      PERIOD            NO. EARTHQUAKES (Mag. > 6.99)
     —————————         ———–             ——————————
     1863 to 1900 incl            38 yrs                   12
     1901 to 1938 incl            38 yrs                   53
     1939 to 1976 incl            38 yrs                   71
     1977 to 2014 incl *         38 yrs                 144 (to Sept. 2009) predict >180 in total.

    Trends since 1986
For example, between 1986 and 1996 (incl), a period of 11 years, there were "just" 15 earthquakes listed by USGS of magnitude 7.0 or greater. This is not markedly different (albeit a slight decrease) from previous (similar periods) of 20th century, where an average of about 18 might be expected.
But between 1997 and 2007 (incl), a period of only 11 years, there were 99 earthquakes with magnitude 7.0 or greater : This is more than a six-fold increase on the previous similar period – and is a stark increase on any earlier decades in 20th century too. Obviously this cannot be explained away by saying that we no have more sensitive seismographs since these are all major earthquakes. We are not including the minor tremors felt in Cayman.

The trends in nature here, particularly from 1997 support the wider realisation of prophecy about the "End Times", namely that an increase in earthquake activity is a pre-requisite for the "second coming of Jesus Christ" foretold in the bible. It does not indicate how close we are to this event, but suggests it is not too far away.

    About the "End Times"
Speaking of the signs that will happen, leading to his return to judge the peoples of earth (at the end of the age), Jesus is quoted as saying ‘in various places there will be famines and earthquakes – these things are the beginning of birth pangs’ (ref: Matthew 24).  Now, because birth pains begin small and then increase in intensity and frequency, this passage can be interpreted to mean that earthquakes (and famines – caused primarily through lack of rainfall in certain areas) will increase both in frequency and impact/strength prior to Jesus’ second coming. Although Jesus is clear that no one will know the day or the hour, and his return will indeed happen “when you do not expect”, he does give us broad pointers, one of these being natural events – like earthquakes.

Here are some links to the source data giving date, place and magnitude of earthquakes.

Note that this has nothing to do with "perception" (the usual excuse), but about hard data. And please none of that nonsense about increase in the number of seismic stations as the explanation. In order to refute the data with that argument the onus is on the proponent to show (a) that for the period 1997 -2007 there were at least SIX TIMES more seismic stations that there were in the previous 11 period from 1986-1996 to match the increase in the number of major earthquakes, and (b) how many of the number of major earthquakes detected in the period 1997-2007 were NOT detected by the seismic stations in operation in the period 1986-1996.

    • Canada Hockey! says:

Perhaps seismic activity is on the rise; perhaps there is more and better detection; perhaps instead of having to prove either, the onus should be on those fearmongering "proponents" of the "second" coming of Jesus Christ to prove the existence of their God rather than "interpreting" passages out of a (very entertaining) story book to mean the end of the world is near.

Although if you can scare Roman Catholic priests into thinking the world is ending perhaps they’ll stop diddling little boys and start repenting so that they may ensure their place in Heaven – sounds like awesome company.

      Be safe Cayman.

Nice try at evading the issue. If you are going to adopt a ‘scientific’ stance about earthquakes, then you are going to have to defend your position with scientific rigour. Perhapses just won’t cut it. The data is clear. Obviously the onus is on you to explain it away.

Not that I have to prove anything about my faith (this is for your benefit, not mine), but actually youare proving it all the time:

2 Peter 3:3-8   "First ofall you must understand this: In the last days mockers will come and, following their own desires, will ridicule us by saying, “What happened to the Messiah’s promise to return? Ever since our ancestors died, everything continues as it did from the beginning of creation.”… Don’t forget this fact, dear friends: With the Lord a single day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a single day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some people understand slowness, but is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to perish, but wants everyone to repent. But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will disappear with a roaring sound, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be exposed".

        • Canada Hockey! says:

I don’t doubt your faith, it seems limitless. I doubt the existance of your god. I also appreciate you taking time to post for my benefit but unfortunately it is wasted, I’m going to roll the dice and go with science. Good luck and be safe.

When is it going to become official that we are on the verge of  witnessing earth changes we have never seen before?  When will there be the first  acknowledgment that the ancients were right about the past and that their predictions about the  end times are real and imminent?

The signs are  right before our eyes, yet we can’t believe that we are standing very close to the day of reckoning.

The skeptics keep telling us that these earthquakes and volcanic activities are very normal occurrences. No need to worry everything is just fine.

    Truthfully, I am very afraid.

Just imagine for moment you are around  to experience in the not too distant future:Worldwide simultaneous earthquakes, big and small objects falling out of the sky, two days of perpetual darkness, suffering and hunger unimaginable.  Can you  imagine not being able to go work, travel or provide care to your love ones. It’s too awful to imagine and incredulous to contemplate.

Integrity, honesty, righteousness and the absolute love of our GOD will be our only hope during this difficult period. Mark my word Mr and Mrs Skeptics

Please stop boring us with this ‘end of time’ nonsense, seeing as you don’t even really believe it how would you expect other people to believe it. If you did truely believe you would give all your worldly goods away to charity, this is the only logical step for true believers to make. Until you do this, you are just talk, talk, talk.

Once you have given everything away to the needy and poor then we will listen to you.

The bible predicted the rise and fall of the all the past "Great Empires" to the year.  The Egytians, the Romans, Alexander the Great and his generals, Hitler and the Third Reich, The World Wars and yes the rise and fall of the current "super power" nations.

The same book told us thousands of years before Columbus that the world was a sphere, that the earth "hung upon nothing", or that the earth rotated each day and orbits the sun, that the sun is moving like a planet on it own circuit around the galaxy and other "current" scientific "facts".  How could the writers of the bible have known these things way back then?

Maybe Einstein was there enlightning people with atomic theory, maybe.

Or maybe it was someone greater than any of us have the capacity to imagine.

Since the bible was finished in around 300 a.d. (synod of hippo) it is hardly surprising that the monks new about the rise and fall of the Egytians, Romans and Alexander the Great – all having occured well before this time. Please could you direct me to the passage in the bible that states the rise and fall of Adulf Hitler? It would be nice if it mentioned a name or two, or the year, or the century for that matter? it would also be nice if it gave a location?

while you are at it please give me the book and passage in the bible that clearly states that the sun revolves around the galactic central point and that we revolve around the sun?

And while you are at it please show me, with chapter and verse, where it says that the earth is a sphere and why did it take until 1519 for people to have actually read that bit in the bible?

      • Anonymous says:

        a. The bible was not ‘finished’ around 300 AD. All of the books that comprise the NT were written before 100 AD.

        b. The prophecies re Alexander the Great, the Romans are contained in the Book of Daniel (the OT) which was written centuries before.

        c. The bible doesn’t need to state modern scientific facts in order to be true. That is not its purpose. Poetry conveys truth without being scientific in its descriptions.

Thank you to the person who wrote this reply.

Anyone who knows history knows that early christians teachings were supressed by the roman empire, burning bibles en mass, genocide etc and are still very much supressed up to today.

The bible is not a "story" book as everything in it has the backing of secular historians.  People died preserving the contents of it word for word and spent lifetimes accurately copying it for us to have down to this modern day. Have some respect for it.

Just because you care not to understand it doesnt mean you get degrade the bible to a "story book".

I couldn’t help but think to myself how familiar that sounded. So it would seem that our religious zelots here on CNS have more in common with Iranian Clerics then they do with their fellow Caymanians! you must be so proud to be a Christian extremist in this day and age! wake up, open your eyes, there have always been earthquakes and there have always been volcanoes.

Jesus said that in the last days there would be earthquakes in diverse places (all around the world) including the Cayman Islands. What people fail to remember is that everything prophesied by holy men of god the bible”IS BEING FULFILLED!" Despite scientists, and atheistic efforts to deny that God is the supreme Being. They believe things happen naturally!Well the bible says that the fear of the Lord is the begining of wisdom.

While the origin of life and origin of the universe cannot be tested or observed. Both creationand evolution are faith-based systems in regards to origins. Neither can be tested because we cannot go back billions or thousands of years to observe the origin ofthe universe or of life in the universe!.Meanwhile scientists continue to reject God the creator of all things on the same grounds that would logically forced them to to reject evolution as a scientific explanation of origin! We can believe the word of our omnipotent omniscient God or we can believe the illogically scientific explanation of fools. According to the Bible, clearly God was here from before the very beginning and creation of the earth. Despite Biblical proof that God exists, some scientists continue to advocate the theory of evolution.

I have a word  for you, you’re missing something here..There were disciples that lived and walked with Jesus while here on this earth…

They witnessed the miracles he performed, the spoken words from His mouth that was fulfilled in front of their very eyes, he turned the water into wine, he sent peter down to the sea to take  money from out of the fishes mouth to pay his taxes with!  and that’s not all, they crucified him thinking that was the end of him, laughing him to scorn,  putting a crown of thornes on his head, and piercing his hands and feet with nails to the cross, they threw a sword in His side. Yes He died but on the 3rd day something miraculous happened, you see all you athiests and agnostics, and anti-christ people out there, your hands are too short to box with God!

      YOu see,"-

Wow – Jesus mentioned the Cayman Islands by name!  I must have missed that in my bible study.

There have been over 1 million earthquakes in the world every single year in recorded history and that will continue until the end of recorded history.

And by the way, nobody is laughing at Jesus/God, we are laughing at all the nuts who think that the smallest daily events are somehow linked to Scripture.

I have a real problem with people who make wild claims and when you refute them, you are somehow attacking Jesus.  Don’t confuse yourself with Jesus.

Cuckoo, cuckoo – do you ever reread what you have just written and laugh at the outstanding absurdity of what you have said?

What is this biblical truth you write of? Quoting the bible at me makes as much sense as me quoting Christmas carols at you trying to prove that father Christmas exists, he does exist look its in this carol here. Until you give me just a tiny little shred of evidence that your god exists then I’m sorry – its just a nice (if a little boring) story. Remember most people on this planet do not believe in your god, including arguably the smartest guy of the 20th Century – Albert Einstein – don’t forget he is a lot smarter than you and he had to come to the conclusion that there was no god, even though he came from a Christian background. The problem is, if you are clever and open minded than religions just makes no sense at all, which is why churches try and preach to the needy and desperate of society, rather than the intellectuals.

Why do you say that there is no evidence for evolution? I’m sure you are perfectly well aware of the countless books and papers that have been written on the subject, theories formed – experiments performed – conclusion drawn? You know how it works. Dare I say darwin’s finches, how about the lowly fruit fly, my god let’s try animal husbandry? Any of that ring a bell. Animal Breeding is forced evolution in motion – you don’t think that pigs looks like that in the wild do you? I won’t even get on to the subject of dinosaurs – no mention of that in the bible, wonder why???????

        Here’s a question for you:

If Buddha came down to earth and said hey look buddy, unfortunately you have been rooting for the wrong team, your god doesn’t exist, it was I who created the earth, would you change your religion? Let’s go one step further and say if god came down himself and said, actually Buddha is correct – he did create the universe I just pretended it was me, would you change religions then? If you answered no to those questions then what hope is there of me trying to persuade you when your own god can’t do it!
Final point – if you are so convinced that the end of the world is nigh, then why of why don’t you give all your possessions away to the poor and needyof society? You won’t need them where you are going? If you did that tomorrow then I might start to believe you, until you Christians put your money where your mouth is you are all just a bunch of non believing talkers. Let me guess you are hedging your bets in case your god doesn’t come down to rescue you………so funny.

quick Christians, the end of the world is nigh, give all your possesions away to charity, as this is your last chance to get the ticket to heaven. If you really are true believers you have no need of worldly possesions, give them away to the poor and destitute.

But then again, let me guess not a single ‘christian’ would give up their possesions for their beliefs!

Perhaps the fact that there are around 1,500,000 earthquakes over magnitude 2 each year ever since records have begun has actually sunk in and that the end of the world is not actually about to happen any time soon.

Hey you all, lighten up.  Cayman has been having small earthquakes on a regular basis for decades and decades.  We are classed as an Earthquake 2 zone, the same classification as California, dueto the frequency of earthquakes.  Big difference is the North American and the Caribbean plates are moving APART, so no major stress is being built up, so very little chance of a major devastating earthquake.  Can anyone recall a major quake in Cayman’s history since Columbus came here?  Same can’t be said for many of the other Caribbean islands.

  10. Anonymous says:

I wish someone would explain the nuances of a logarithmic scale to the people of Cayman.  In brief, a magnitude 7 is x10 more destructive then a 6,  x100 more than a 5 and x1000 more than a 4.

Most people standing on solid bedrock would be unable to detect a 3.3 and very few people are aware of anything less than a 5.0.

Seismographs can detect quakes at this level but people can’t.  Headlines that use words such as ‘shakes’ and ‘rocks’ are misleading and unhelpful.

I know of several people who were unaware of the 5.9 event we experienced in January.  I felt it but my neighbour, 30 feet away, didn’t.  If it had been a 6.3 we’d have all known about it.

God won’t "save" any of us, because we have refused to save ourselves all these years.

I have not lost my faith or any of my beliefs but what I have come to accept is that the end may be near, a lot closer than we anticipated and there will be nothing any of us can do. I don’t think any of us can afford a spot on the moon and quite frankly I wouldn’t want to live there anyway…

My point is, stop arguing about religion or beliefs or science. Instead, accept…accept that we are the reason why the earth is probably dying right now…it’s time to wake-up to reality…for I fear it might be ‘too little, too late’.
