Cops arrest ESSO robbers

| 12/06/2010

Cayman Islands News, Grand Cayman Island Headline News, Cayman crime(CNS): Updated full story 1pm Police have confirmed that two men have been arrested in connection with another armed robbery at a gas station following a police chase in which officers were fired upon. On Friday evening (11 June) at 8.52 pm emergency services received a call that the Mostyns Gas station on Bodden Town Road was being robbed by three masked men, one of whom was armed with a shotgun. Officers were in the area and responded intime to see the suspect vehicle leaving the scene. Police tried to stop the vehicle using blue lights and siren but it refused to stop. The car headed towards George Town turning into Northward Road where it was abandoned. Officers arriving on scene were fired upon and the suspects escaped on foot. (Photos Dennie Warren Jr)

However, a search was conducted of the Lower Valley area which resulted in two men being arrested in connection with the robbery at an address in Wil T Road. Although the robbers fired their weapon at police, no one was hurt during the robbery or the chase.
“Thankfully none of our officers, or any members of the public, were injured in this incident. The consequences could have been so much worse,” Superintendent Adrian Seales said. “While we are pleased that we were able to make arrests very quickly after the incidents took place we still need anyone who may have witnessed these men carrying out the robbery, fleeing the scene, making off from the abandoned car or trying to make off from the officers to come forward.
He asked people who may have heard or seen someone running through their back yard to contact police.
“You may even have found property in your yard that shouldn’t be there,” Seales added. “If so, we need you to contact Bodden Town police office as soon as possible with that information. Investigations to trace the third individual involved are actively ongoing and we are following a number of lines of enquiry in relation to that. I would once again take this opportunity to take all necessary precautions with their business security. If you need any advice re this please contact your local police station where officers will do everything they can to assist.”
Investigations into the crime are continuing, led by Detective Sergeant Wright of the CID in Bodden Town 947-2220.

Agrees 150% with all those that does not agree with this bias district thing. THIS IS ONE ISLAND! WE UNITE AS ONE! Why the hell would any other district be so much different; Last time I check West Bay, George Town, Bodden Town, North Side and East End was in GRAND CAYMAN! We are one nation for goodness sake!!

You are missing the point of the comments re districts. It is to exhort those in WB and GT also to be vigilant and have the courage to report crimes.

Finally some justice in Cayman, its about time.  The extent of all these crimes is starting to get extremely out of hand.  Thanks to Cayman Police carrying out their duties as our Island’s protectors, we might actually have hope yet.  Its about time police made some sort of progress concerning all these recent events.

Most importantly I think this sends a message to all these little criminal thugs out there that their actions will have consequences and that the law will always win in the end.  Its about time we see some positive news for once.  All we can pray for is that this is the start to the end of all this non-sense.

    Keep it up.

Go to the US Embassy in Kingston and see who they are letting into their country and the questioning they submit them to. It is time that we start applying these standards to all, but  I am afraid it is a bit too late for some.

Congradulations to PS Wendy Parchment and PC Samuels who did and excellent job and who risk their lives to help catch those guys. If it was not for them i don’t think those guys would have been caught, it would have been another unsolved Robbery. Thank you guys.

CNS – Why is the WB Road mugging being included as a footnote on this story and not as a story in its own right?

I know that not all crime was/is committed by foreigners, but it is time for the Immigration dept to go through their files and get confirmation from every employer that the person they are holding a permit for is still 100% employed and has a full week of working hours. I bet they would find that some of those businesses people were employed for don’t even exist anymore.

Please send those people who are not having full time work off Island and fine those Caymanians who continue to hold those work permits for people who they don’t even have work for, and prevent them from being able to take out another work permit for the next 2 years.

Yes, it will take time and you will have to do one company/employer at the time, but I bet once you get the ball rolling and everyone can see that Immigration is serious and enforcing the laws, people will sit up and take notice and realize they can’t get away with the same bullshit they used to.

You know why they got caught good CaymanianOfficers with local knowledge!

This shows they are more than capable as they know their Island and its people!

These Night Owl Gas stations should should show some thankfulness to the Night Cops who drive by and vsit the Gas stations late at night looking for a cup of cofee and a snack.   It should be given to them free once they are in uniform, instead of employees keeping it to take home and putting it outside the back door for their friends and security to pick up.

This place cant get any better.  Watch the back doors of these restaurants, gas stations and others.  You would be surprised.   CESAR AND SARAH are two Cayman dogs running the streets at late night on duty too

RCIPS- continue to be brave! Your service to the community is often understated, misuderstood, and in most instances taken for granted.

The criminals involved in such crimes are only fit for this country laying in a pine box six feet under the ground; they certainly do not contribute to the development of the islands whilst above ground where they refuse to pursue education and in turn believe that work involves theft, burglary, robbery, attempted murder (as in this case), murder- and the list goes on. Sounds harsh?- It rightfully is!

  8. streetwatcha says:

Good job RCIPS . To those Criminals or indended criminials who intend to rob and kill and bring down the economy of these Islands, let this be a warning that you too will be caught. Its not if, but rather ,when. I think they are committing these crimes with impunity as if to challenge the police to come and get them. Well we see some of them lying on the ground in the custody of the police. Thats was a good picture. I would like to see some more like that. I hope there is no haste to bail them. Prisoners sometimes don’t take a seat before everybody asking about bail for them. Let them feel the consequence of their actions. I’m just ashamme of the females who are taking active part in robberies Is this the dept that we have descended? God helps us.

Baines Im unhappy to see officers especially your volunteers unprotected.  The public does not realize that many of these officers are volunteers.  i saw several last night at Will T Drive.  Way to go David…. always on the beat.  Way to go Brandon…. full officer….you should be the one in the accelerated program Baines has as his baby.  You are so enthusiastic about your work.  This officer has to be one of the smallest but he is always there and visible and working.  Take him in had and groom him.

Give your officers the resources they need and not used vest from other territories.  Protect your most valuable assets.

To the select few that do work..Way to go guys….

RCIP management get a clue. Baines its not rocket science, no need to re-invent the wheel…Your criminals have guns…equip your officers. Im not saying they should all have guns, but I agree the force needs more of a balance. USG is but a select few and your hot spot team of volunteers appear more visible than they are.  Awesome job specials, keep it up!!!!!

  10. robert says:

    Great work RCIP.

I have a suggestion to the police that is to be taken as constructive criticism

as I am behind the police 100%.Whenever someone calls to the station to make a report it seems that the person answering the phone spends more time getting information about the caller rather than concentrating on what the call is about. But we have to bear in mind that not everyone feels comfortable with giving their name.I do understand that not every call that is made to the police is genuine but it may help in some cases.A classic example of what I mean is shortly after last nights robbery I received a call from my son who was playing with some friends in the general vicinity of where it happened and he told that he had heard the news and they had just saw a man in jeans and a t shirt running down the road and he sure did not look like a jogger.I said to him call the police right away and tell them what you saw.He called back in maybe ten minutes and said Dad my friend called the police and they started asking him so many questions that he finally said forget it and hung up.My point is that in an instance like this if the police had taken the information on what the call was about and acted quickly, rather than trying to get so much information on the caller the person that was seen may possibly been one of the robbers ,and may have been apprehended, but instead the caller simply hung up because he did not want give his personal information.Again this is in no way intended to criticize the police or try to tell them how how to do their job but merely an observation from the outside that may be of some help.

  11. peter milburn says:

Seems like a good job by the police last nite.Hats off to them all as they continue to stand in harms way WITHOUT ARMS to protect themselves. In one of the recent robberies a gunman without a mask was caught on camera.Could the police not put that picture on TV or in the daily papers FRONT PAGE to let the public know who they are(if picture is clear enough) Surely they can tweak the camera about to get a better shot(angle?).I guess that will be called an offence against that humans rights!!!!!!How come they seem to have more rights than us law abiding folks out there?Time to put the faces out their folks and see if that will help make a difference.Again a good job by the RCIPS.Keep it up.

GREAT JOB BODDEN TOWN POLICE.  Congrats to PC Chris Samuels who was unarmed and still went after them.  Commissioner Baines if you are reading this I hope you give this officer a commendation.

THIS JUST GOES TO SHOW…You can pull that Robbery Stunts in West bay and in Town and on Seven Mile Beach but TRY SO NOT COME UP EAST.  Bodden Town, East End and North Side not gonna stand for that Monkey Business you all pulling over on the other side of the island.  Nah we raise better than that.  Trust me if those robbers got caught by some local BT’ers then the Police would had been peeling them off the street after we protect our businesses and homes and beat the living you know what outta them.

Do not know about the rest of Cayman but God Bless Bodden Town and North Side and East End.  YA HEARD!!!

Well if that isn’t a biassed and STUPID response! We are all happy that the police caught these criminals, but this sort of East End/West Bay crap is part of why gangs exist! This sort of narrow-minded approach where "as long as my area is safe… ho cares about the rest of the country" is only going to make things worse!!! Get off your "east-end" high horse and speak for your community as a whole, Stupid!!!

      • This stupid mentality about East/West is nonsense, this is exactly what the gang members are doing, one side against the other.

If you all are sincere about whats happening here in Cayman you will all stop the bull crap about which side you from, this is OUR island east/ west/ north& south.what I am more concerned about is catching these thugs and putting them where they belong, behind bars with hard labor for a mighty long time.

Any good law abiding person will not tolerate this, so lets show our pride and stop encouraging them. way to go RCIP, keep it up dont stop until you get every single one of them even their mama/papa for putting up with it.

      • Anonymous says:

You obviously don’t get it.  West Bay and George Town have so many criminals that they cloak and hide things for each other, but the eastern districts are different.  They prefer to respect law and order and will do the right thing, tell the police who dey are, where they are and what they up to!  Keep up the good work BT, NS & EE.  Do your part to stamp out crime.  Now WB and GT can follow your example.

        • Pending says:

Really, EE, NS and  BT tell the police who they are? Then if that is the case, why were these people armed with illegal firearms? Did you not tell them to hand the illegal guns in during the amnesty? Are there no more guns in EE, NS and BT?

You need to take a good long hard look at what you have just said, because it is utter BS.

If  I were going to take an educated guess, is it not EE, NS and BT as such where most of the boats come in with the drugs and guns? And you hardly ever hear of them being caught, so in effect you are bringing these problems to the island by not turning these people in.

Nice try, get off your high horse.

This is NOT a district issue, this is a Cayman issue! What happened to "TRY SO NOT COME UP EAST" (attitude) when the gas station in NS was robbed? There have been other crimes (even murder) in EE, NS & BT before, so what happened then? Come on girl, this is a Cayman issue, & your attitude stinks gal.

    • Dred says:

Aaah not exactly. Did you hear about the BT stoning incident. Police was at that for months being stoned.

While I applaud them on this matter I have seen and heard of their not so good moments.

    • Anonymous says:

ALL criminal activity that happens in Cayman, affects the Cayman Islands ALTOGETHER. We are too small an island nation to degrade or demean any district OR it’s people, specifically when a severe crime has taken place there. I have found it quite ignorant and demeaning to hear  local citizens ridicule and judge one another in EVERY negative sense- just because they come from a certain district which they seem to forget, forms a part of their own island, I have heard it all-

‘No wonder she/he is so ignorant, they must come from West Bay or East End!’ to…

‘They so black, and ugly they ga be from George Town!’

Or…….’Unna heard bout the latest murder/drug haul?’

‘You dun kno that ga be in West Bay!’

When crime happens in Cayman and hits the worldwide press all islands are affected and looked badly upon.

So if one district seems to be perfectly crime free with persons who seemingly have it all together, thanks be to God Almighty, however… the goal of this comment of mine is to see Caymanian Nationals more united in fighting crime and caring enough to see it eradicated, irrespective of which district, island, or community they are from.

How I feel is, if I live in South Sound and I hear of a crime happening in Bodden Town, I am angry just the same as if it were to happen on my stretch of land my side of the island.

It is pleasing to read that the RCIP has nabbed these criminals, hopefully more persons will be caught and charged for the recent rash of robberies occurring in Cayman.

Keep up the good work RCIPS and Caymanians, let us work together to see the island crime free…even if it seems not possible.

Mr Baines replied iin a very assuring manner saying something like -Yes, these are issues he is aware of and that he plans to tackle them head-on. He said "Just watch and see." ……………I am STILL watching and waiting!!

Great Job Officers. Sgt Parchment(nice to have you back in town) and staff great job!!  We need to support our hardworking officers.  Officers like Peart, Mason, Edwards, Muschette, Burton, Macdonald, Butler, Barbaron, Miss Howell, Wright, Myles. Manny Myles you’re not on the streets anymore but your hardwork is not forgotten. The "Special Constables especially those on the hot spot team need to be commended.  You would think these officers were being paid for their service. You all go anywhere and everywhere. Talk about true dedication and a great show of community spirit.  If I missed someone forgive me i can’t think of the all the names.  Appreciate these officers they work hard and all without arms.  Their local knowledge is valuable.  Support and assist them.

Baines may bring his elite 40 but at the sacrifice of local officers.   While you all sit in cars at night and watch, i sleep peacefully knowing those officers that are willing to put their lives at risk and run into bushes after criminals, are on the job. Keep these officers motivated.  They already get a lot of bashing from the public; officers with such dedication will take back our streets our island.

  24. The Answer says:

    — "Immediate" 20% pay raise for all police officers (they make hardly enough to live, let alone the risk to justify the job)

    — Immediate hiring of UK recruits (no local friendships or ties)

    — Immediate "limited" martial law edict by the Governor allowing door to door searches of all residences in the known problem areas of Bodden Town, Georgetown, and West Bay.  Enough searches to discover names and locations, evidence, weapons.

    — Immediate 90 day siezure of vehicles of known suspects. (GOVERNOR’S edict)

    — Immediate 90 day rendition flights of all suspects to prisons in the UK (90 day holding period, outside of Cayman, extended up to 120 days when evidence warants)

    — Immediate notice in the Newspapers that known "associates" and "hang-arrounds" of suspects face 90 day rendition to UK prisons (and 120 day siezure/ subsequent forfieture of vehicles) for uttering threats, and subsequent searches of their family/friend homes .. (Governor and police edict)

    — Immediate removal of ALL judiciary in criminal trials to be replaced by UK judges. (limited Martial law, objections moot).

    — IMMEDIATELY enact laws that "gun crime" prisoners will be sentenced to UK prisons regardless of Caymanian status or ties.

Like it or not extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.  Like it or not, THIS IS A UK SOIL.. We can not fly her flag for convenience and then cry Caymanian when the tough decisions come.  We need to start running this place better, take this seriously.

If the present spiral continues, the good people who fuel this island will absolutely 100% without a doubt, LEAVE these lands, leaving uneducated, undesirable criminal types and a few loyal (and desperate) nationals to try to patch the tatters back together.  I predict murky times for Cayman without IMMEDIATE "leadership" and drastic action.

I came to this island many many years ago because of the reputation for law and order, because THINGS ARE DIFFERENT in Cayman.  My friends and I would think nothing of going out late here on a Friday and injecting $1000 – $2000 into the local economy over drinks and dinner.  Last night we stayed in like children and contemplated catching a flight to the Bahamas or Miami to get away from the crime risk.  Is this what we want?  An island where the locals fear to go out for violence and crime??

GOVERNOR, WHERE ARE YOU? LEADERSHIP, WHERE ARE YOU???

Denny, I would have to say that I think the poster is on the right track in what he is saying. I must say I dont totally agree with you in that "it takes courage to run a country", but on the contrary it takes courage to NEGLECT your PEOPLE and the country as a whole as has been done by ALL successive Governments. I takes courage to committ the Political Crimes and ‘crimes’ against humanity as our elected officials have committed throughout the entire history of our once hopeful country and NOT CARING that they may have to face the WRATH of ‘The People’ in the not so distant future. That’s what I call courage!  Otherwise, courage is not what is needed.

What it truly takes, are elected officials with good hearts that CARE about their Country and the very human lives of the Native People that live within… STATESMEN!!! Otherwise it is EASY to see and KNOW what needs to be done FOR the country and to ‘LAY DOWN THE LAW OF THE LAND FORCEFULLY and without DELAY!!

Answer, I agree with you on about 90% of what you have suggested.

I disagree that the Police should have a 20% increase in salary(to continue doing hardly any real police work). I think they could have that 20% increase (a promissory agreement) as an incentive to go out there and do the job they are NOT doing so well at – to date.

Case in point: After the nasty spate of crimes we had a couple of months back, the RCIP elevated response to the level of crime at that time and NO sooner than  the crime receded, they relaxed their actions to the point where we saw basically no police presence on the streets and in those "hang-around" areas, nor were they trying to be proactive in doing any REAL undercover work by infiltrating the known criminal groups to get more inside info on any PROBABLE criminal activity yet to come as clearly being carried out again, equally as brazing and consistent.

      Anyone’s opinions?

I believe some of these youngesters  do not have a father figure around to  monitor and punish them for the minor crime they commit which  leads to a larger  crime – like what is happening now.. Too many fatherless children are becoming Caymans worse enemy, and it is sad to know the mothers alone work to keep the home going, and this is where they slip up becoming linvolved with the wrong company, and peer pressure takes advantage – To make a fast dollar we will continue to experience such uncalled for crimes.

Regardless of whether the child is fatherless or not, if the parent who has custody of the child is notdoing their job, then someone else needs to take responsibility. Some are scared of Rodulph Dixon.  I wonder if he was in charged, would we ever had seven robberies?  How come this top Caymanian cop is not re-instated yet???

    GOOD!

This shows we don’t NEED more monies or outside help to fighting crime!

    – WHAT WE do NEED IS "PROPER MANAGEMENT" OF THE POLICE SERVICE!

    – WHAT WE do NEED IS DEDICATED OFFICERS WHO LOVE THEIR COUNTRY!

    – WHAT WE do NEED IS FOR THIS COMMISSIONER TO OPEN HIS EYES and UTILIZE THE ALREADY EXPERIENCED OFFICERS IN THE POLICE SERVICE

    – AND WHAT WE do NEED IS TO GET SUCH OFFICERS OFF THE STREETS who KNOW LITTLE ABOUT THE LOCAL PEOPLE

Yes we do just not the way they are doing it.

What we need is gang specialist from the US to come in and create a task force for dealing with our gang situation. I do not believe the UK has the answer to our problem. We need US assistance for this.

Very good RCIP.  I hope you catch them all and the courts give them the maximum term of life imprisonment.  Drop in hard labour too, though that word doesn’t exist at HMP.

When will this madness end?!  This is not the Cayman we have know and love and it is good to know that this time the RCIPS were able to quickly make arrests, even in the face of being shot at. Hopefully that they will be able to catch and arrest whomever else was involved. These criminals who are destroying our beloved country need to be taken off the street and I hope that the judiciary will find the means to put them all away for a long time when they are prosecuted. Let us also not forget the need to pray for our police officers and their safety in these violent times.

Finally!  The police need to be more present on the streets.  They should be out and visible in high crime areas.  Make their presence known.  Driving last night- a Friday night and did not see ONE police car or officer on the streets.  Stand up!

What road were you on ? Was it in Little Cayman. I was in George Town and Prospect and there were lots of police on patrol. All these officers need to be armed. Come on people wake up were are no longer dealing with petty thieves. The officers have families too and need to protect their lives.

  40. KMan Girl says:

Great job RCIPS!!! Now let’s hope that a) they are the right suspects, b) the others are found and caught and soon too, c) charges are laid, including firearm charges d) evidence can be provided and sticks, e) no form of light sentences are given – if found guilty.

No mercy on the wicked! Set examples of these scoundrals, and somehow make prison an unpleasant place to be!

To the families of these young people – if you knew your child was into this type of thing – SHAME ON YOU – for not doing something about them. If not – sorry for all that you are about to go through, just please dont come on TV talking about "not my child", "he/she would never"…cuz now you see otherwise.

Our churches andour Island on a whole need to pray for our Police. Tonight  I watched so many Police speeding to the scene and I had to think to myself poor guys possibly speeding to their deaths. It was then that I REALIZED WHAT A DANGEROUS JOB THAT THEY HAVE.  Let us all encourage them and hold them in our prayers.

It is time for the Police to prove themselves.  When are we going to face reality and deal with the situation?  The gangsters are bold, and the business community is being punished by the criminals.  It time for the people who see and know about certain unsavory activities taking place to speak out and bring an end to some of the criminality.

Let the sum bag talk.  I hope they will get all of them.
