Driver ran after car smash

| 05/09/2010

(CNS): A driver involved in a two vehicle accident early this morning fled the scene but has since been questioned by police. The crash along Shamrock Road at about 2:43am today (Sunday 5 September) occurred after the driver of one of the vehicles lost control of his vehicle, which appears to have veered into on-coming traffic, police explained in a release this morning. Both vehicles were extensively damaged and a male driver of one of the vehicles involved was transported to the George Town Hospital for a check up, as he was in shock. (Photo by Dennie Warren Jr)

The other driver fled the scene before police arrived, but later went to the hospital, where he was spoken to by police. The RCIPS wasnot clear if the driver who caused the accident was the same driver who fled the scene.

Investigations into this accident are underway.

How can we ask drivers to stop using cell phones when the police is doing the same thing them self. I have pass many of police cars with the police officers chatting away on there cell phones. As the saying go’s clean your own house before trying to clean others.

I fully agree that cellphone calls and texting should be illegal while driving, no doubt about that.  However, for some odd reason I doubt that’s what the driver who’s vehicle "veered into oncoming traffic" at 2:43 a.m. was doing.  Do you think he/she might have been driving like a crazed fool after being out partying all night?  Or maybe just driving like a crazed fool because that’s what he/she does all the time?  I spend a fair bit of timing driving between Bodden Town and George Town and I literally take my life in my hands every time I do it.  It makes no difference whether it is 6:30 a.m. or 11:30 p.m. the low riding, ignorant maniacs seem to be out at all times of the day or night. I know the police can’t be everywhere, however just once I would like to see them on Shamrock Road doing a stop check.

i’ve seen hundred of drivers on roundabouts here, not signaling and on cell phones at the same time!

Evidence shows that talking on a cell phone is as dangerous as drink driving.  It should be banned and enforced. (Mac it is a new revenue stream and would save costs of dealing with accidents).

Good luck getting cell phone usage by drivers banned.

Some of the biggest offenders are the Cayman politicians. I have seen members of both parties yaking away while driving. They are setting a bad example for the young ones.

The government need to "govern". That’s what it means in simple terms. I think we all realize the are many who lack basic common sense. The governments to protect its citizens by governing the numskulls who text and talk while driving. It should be against the law. Is is too much to ask….a little common sense.

If the RCIPS don’t already do this I would like to suggest they start. If the driver or drivers of vehicles involved in a collision have mobile phones in the vehicle then their call details should be checked to see if the phone was being used at the time of the accident. Perhaps then Cayman will come to its senses and BAN the use of mobiles while being in control (or not) of a vehicle. Just this week in the UK a new report from the Police has proved that using a mobile while driving is at least as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. Wake up Cayman, we left it much too late and deaths are happening. Now it’s a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence over here, and still drivers do it!!.
