8th hurricane weakens & speeds into mid-Atlantic

| 09/10/2010

(CNS): Hurricane Otto was moving at almost 29 mph at 10:00am local time on Saturday morning as it headed into the middle of the Atlantic. The eighth hurricane of the season posed no threat to land as it moved toward the northeast and forecasters said further increases in speed were expected tonight. A category one hurricane Otto has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph  with higher gusts but further weakening is expected during the next couple of days. The NHC said Otto could lose tropical cyclone characteristics by Monday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the centre with tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 220miles. Meanwhile, a broad area of low pressure over the south-western Caribbean has a 20% change of becoming a tropical cyclone.

The NHC said it continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms and some slow development of the system is possible over the next couple of days as it moves slowly west-north-westward or north-westward.
