Police say last report of rape made in August

| 21/10/2010

(CNS): The police confirmed Wednesday that the last incidence of rape reported to authorities was more than two months ago in August. Following local speculation that three rapes had occurred on Grand Cayman in the last few weeks, the RCIPS categorically denied any cover up of a "serial" rapist. So far this year there have been ten cases of rape investigated by police. According to RCIPS statistics, there were 14 cases in 2009, 20 in 2008 and 14 again in 2007. A spokesperson for the police service stressed that rumours circulating regarding a serial rapist on Grand Cayman were utterly unfounded and were causing unnecessary fear.

“We are aware that there are rumours and Blackberry Messages circulating suggesting that there is a serial rapist operating in the Islands,” the police spokesperson stated. “The RCIPS can categorically state that these rumours and messages are fictitious and malicious. It is clear that they have been designed to cause fear and alarm throughout the community."

There is insufficient info in the report.  Several rapes each year neither confirms of refutes the possibility of a serial rapist.

How many reported rapes were there, and how many  were successfully prosecuted?

This is so sad to me.  I came on Cayman News Service to find out if there was any information on this "Serial Rapist" as I too just heard about it and felt scared while coming home tonight.  Either way, what has happened to this island that A. someone would be sick enough to start a rumor like that to scare woman and/or B.  thepolice would feel the need to lie about something so scary and SERIOUS!  I am one of the people who have been effected by all the violence that has increased here and no longer will go to the store at night, won’t go on a run after the sun has set, and feel constantly jumpy walking to or from my car if it is dark out.  Sad. To think that I used to live in a big city.    Whoever is responsible rumor, lies, rape, and/or  sickness…..Thanks a lot!

This is good news, but to be considered a fact the source must be reliable and in good faith. With the many arrests made for crimes of late, but not many charges, does this mean that there is no forward speed in an investigation into an alleged rape, does it mean that the person making the complaint did not seek a medical examination so the RCIP says that it has not taken place? While I have not heard of this rumour, and do not know if any of what I have written is true, it would bare asking the question posted. It also bears to ask while they have been 10 cases investigated, does this mean that there has been 3 people that could have reported rape, but the Police have not launched an investigation. With the fowl ups by them of late and with the current work load they bear it gives credit to the questions put forth. It is not a stretch to give this some thought.

    This is simply not true.

To those who entered a thumbs down….believe me, it is not the truth…maybe not the "serial" bit…but the "August" bit is not true.

It is disappointing that the RCIPS felt they needed to vocalize how uncaring they actually are by arguing the statistical significance of reported violent gender crime in a community of our size.

CNS: The statistics were not included in the original response from the RCIPS to the rumours of the serial rapist but were supplied in response to a follow-up question from CNS.

Are we to assume then that they are not counting the daily rape of the Cayman Islands people by the current Administration?

I remember when rape was almost unheard of here.  Now it seems almost commonplace.  What is happening to our country?

You must be talking about WAAAAAAAAYY back. I’ve been here about 20 years and heard about them all the time.

You are living in the bubble provided by the collusion of the government and the Compass. Back then they were absolutely NOT reported.

I know this for a fact.

Just because it was "unheard" of, doesn’t mean it didn’t take place.
