US high school teen graduate takes Miss World crown

| 30/10/2010

(CNS): The title of Miss World 2010 has gone to 18-year-old Alexandria Mills from the United States of America. The high school graduate from Louisville, Kentucky, became the 60th woman to win the blue tiara which was placed on her head by outgoing Miss World Kaiane Aldorino from Gibraltar in China on Saturday. Miss Botswana Emma Wareus and Miss Venezuela Adriana Vasini were the first and second runner-ups and the host country’s own contestant, Tang Xiao was also placed in the top five along with Miss Ireland. Hopes for Miss Cayman Islands following Cristin Alexander’s massive success in the people’s poll were dashed when she failed to make the top twenty.

“It’ll be an honour to become Miss World 2010," said Mills, who was announced the winner by Julia Morley, chairperson of the pageant.

The ceremony started with a traditional Chinese dance, followed by the introduction of the Miss World contestants from all parts of the globe. All the Miss World contestants performed the ‘Dances of the World’. The subtitle of Miss World Talent went to Ireland while Northern Ireland was named Miss World Sports. Miss World Top Model title was won by Norway as Puerto Rico became Miss World Beach Beauty and Kenya was named Miss World Beauty with a Purpose.

The first Miss World competition was held in 1951 India and Venezuela hold the record of producing the most Miss Worlds to date, with five title-holders each.

Anyone that took the time to visit the Miss World website throughout the month of activities leading up to the competition would have had no problem identifying the final line up.  When the host announced the names of the finalists and came to the very last available spot, I was able to call out, "Miss Botswana", at exactly the same moment that the host said it!  It really is a waste of time, and money, for us to send our girls to this competition when they don’t have a chance to win.  Its already decided who the finalists will be WAY before the competition starts so they really are just going through the motion of having a competition.  Sad because our Caymanian girls stack up as equals with any of the other girls and could win if judged fairly on their attributes alone.

I am so proud of how Cristin represented The Cayman Islands and hope she doesn’t allow this to discourage her.  Her beauty, intelligence and grace illuminated that stage in Sanya!!  GO CRISTIN!!!!!

year after year i see that the winners of these competitions are relatively young, yet Cayman insists on always sending one of the oldest contestants of the Miss World and Miss Universe competition year after year.  We seriously need to save this money and forget this competition.  As it is not basedon beauty, poise or brains! but more on youthfulness, innocence and lack of experience.  Those are the qualities that cleary "wow" the judges.

This pageant is a pile garbage and really too politically, it’s not about beauty and brains, itabout money.    I suspect Donald Trump is probably going to acquire the Miss World Franchise –  that’s my 2 cents.

Well done Cristin! Semifinals in Beachwear, Finals in Sports, #4 in People’s Choice — all with less than a weeks’ preparation time is excellent! Cannot wait to see what you can do at Miss Universe in August 2011!!

    xoxo

What about what she can do for her Islands? Year after year, I see our money being spent on these girls and what do we get back?

      Can someone please explain?

No surprise, really. It’s all a political thing, anyway. It isn’t really about who’s most beautiful or combining the package of beauty, brains and common sense mixed with a dash of personality and some attitude.
