Three car smash in heart of tourist district

| 15/01/2011

(CNS): Despite the push by the RCIPS to improve the standard of driving on Cayman’s roads, car smashes continue to be a frequent occurrence. Last night three vehicles were involved in an accident on West Bay Road near the Westin Casuarina Resort and Cayman Falls shops at around 10pm. Although it appeared no was injured during the accident, the cars were badly damaged. In the Legislative Assembly on Friday the premier also called on drivers to take more care on the roads as he said the number of accidents could have a detrimental impact on the country’s tourism sector. Government has said that it has plans to reduce the speed limit on parts of the West Bay Road and introduce more cross walks when it brings amendments to the traffic law later this year. I applaud the ban for texting and talking on the phone whilst driving, however, who is going to enforce this law?

The police? They clearly don’t have a handle on the speed limit and all other traffic offenses, so people are just going to continue to do what they have been doing because they can get away with it!

What push is made by RCIP? Every day I am making three runs between Newlands and George Town. Every day I see people driving 60-70 in a 40 zone, people driving while toddlers standing up between the two front seats, cars with windows tinted way too dark, dump trucks with their loads not covered. I could go on and on and on.

If I see all of this, how come the police isn’t? Where are they?

Until police starts being a royal pain for drivers and everyone feels that police could be anywhere at any time, NOTHING will change.

Maybe the problem here is the practice by the Vehicle Licensing Department “who are bound by some UN convention I am told” of handing out Cayman Drivers licenses to anyone who comes from countries that are on a particular list knowing full well that in some of these countries a person can buy a drivers license without ever having seen a car much less driving one.  They then get on our roads and cause all kinds of problems.

Everybody who takes up residence or work here and want to drive should have to take a written and driving test by us before being allowed on the road.

Placing 12" curbs in the turning lane where it is not used will also stop people (buses, taxi’s)  using it to overtake. As mentioned in the above article this could be done at crosswalks which are heavily need on WB road. Its only a matter of time until another tourist in run down for looking the wrong way. Reducing the speed limit to 30 from Queens Court to the Westin is also a good idea Oh and while they’re at it…could they please raise the speed limit of the bottom end of South Sound? If WB road can be a 40 surely this area can!

Maybe they should plan on having signs with KM/H as well as Miles per Hour for the cars that are in kms…

Does this government have any common sense?

"Does this government have any common sense"?

I think we all know the answer to that question.

So all the bad drivers can disregard the speed limit in KPH and MPH? Here is a hint, if you are overtaking all of the other cars on the road, YOU ARE SPEEDING!

Government should not have to incur additional expenses to have signage (and other things) in both mph and kmph. If you choose to buy a car with a kmph odometer learn how to convert.

Some of these areas where these accidents are occuring are very badly lite.but that is no excuse for these things to be happening when no pedestrians are involved. The reason the By pass road was established was to lessen the traffic on the high tourism areas.People still seem to want to speed in these built up areas and it has proven deadly on more than one occasion.Change the speed limit erect flashing warning lites and slow everyone down.If you want to go faster then use the by pass road.Put in speed bumps if you have to if this will slow some of these idiots down.Everyone knows that certain vehicles use the center lane as if it belonged to them.and this too will lead to a serious accident where folks walking across the road from the various hotels, condos etc.are allowed to cross by the "good "drivers only to be hit by some clown in a rush using the middle lane.

Most likely cause of the spike in accidents? Driving without due care and attention, caused by TEXTING. It’s REAL and worse than DUI!!!

In fact, wouldn’t that be also subject to a DUI charge? With a minor tweak of the Traffic Law that "influence" can be expanded from alcohol and drugs to electronic devices. They have the same potential result.

Once again I will say if government does not act on the speed limit NOW.  The next death will be on their shoulders.

TALK IS CHEAP. ACT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE FOR THE NEXT VICTIM!!

    THERE ARE LIVES AT STAKE.

"Government has said that it has plans to reduce the speed limit on parts of the West Bay Road"

Ok… How hard can that be?

1/ Call the sign shop, get 10 (probably less) signs printed.

2/ Call maintenance dept, get signs installed.

3/ Call CNS, Cayman27, Compass and Rooster and tell then to tell us the limit has changed.

4/ Give out speeding tickets until we actually slow down.

Bet you I could get 1,2 and 3 done by Monday lunch.

You are implying that their is somone in charge that can get a few of their people off their butts long enough to accomplish said work.  Good one.

as opposed to the number of armed robberies…

"the premier … said the number of accidents could have a detrimental impact on the country’s tourism sector."

It really is time to ban cell phone use whilst driving – no talking, texting – nothing!

And it’s not the speed on WB Road it’s the bad drivers!
