Premier to talk cash and ‘governor in cabinet’ in UK

| 04/02/2011

(CNS): The country’s premier will be heading to London next week to discuss government finances and the ongoing question of the continued use of the tern “Governor-in-Cabinet” in new legislation. McKeeva Bush leaves for Miami this weekend to meet with the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) before heading to the United Kingdom for a meeting with the Minister for Overseas Territories, Henry Bellingham and tosign another Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA). The premier will be taking good news with him following revelations this week that the expected deficit for this financial year has turned into a surplus and that CIG many not need to increase borrowing as much as previously expected.

Bush is scheduled to meet Bellingham on Tuesday where aside from discussing the proposed framework for fiscal responsibility agreement between the Cayman Islands and the United Kingdom the premier will also seek a clarification on the use of the term “Governor-in-Cabinet” which has been a point of debate in the Legislative Assembly recently.

While in the British capital Bush will sign a TIEA with Japan bringing the number of tax deals Cayman now has to 21.

George Town, backbench MLA Ellio Solomon and Ken Jefferson the Financial Secretary will be travelling with the premier on this trip while Rolston Anglin will be Acting Premier in his absence.

Instead of "talking cash and governor-cabinet" he better do something about the criminals robbing the tourists.  After all, he is the reason we have an increase in tourism so I’m sure that he can catch the criminals.

Hey it looks as though a lot more UDP "supporters" have got new PC’s. Wonder where they got them from…same place the refrigerators came from I suppose.

Or as is more likely someone is benefiting from sending multiple blogs!!!

Mac & Ellio will deal with the UK.

All you player haters go back to work.

  4. karen says:

The Premier is doing an excellent job in meeting the demands of the UK! Well done! Just to think to borrow more monies is to put us in more debt. His opponents (certain bloggers) are already upset that the country has increased its revenue. May God bless him and hisassociates, and may they all return home safely. :o)

McKeewa went to London in 2010 and told them he needed to borrow CI$207.8 million. He was told that was too much, and that he could only borrow CI$155 million.

McKeewa is now headed to London to tell them that he can get by with less than CI$155 million, even after giving $??? to Cohen who everyone knew were not capable of providing financing.

A couple more trips to London, and one or two more RFQs and McKeewa with think that we are able to offer England some financing. lol.

Indeed, the Premier is doing a fine job! Credit to whom credit is due!

    • Fine job? says:

      Doing a fine job?
      How?
      By travelling?
Cus I know for sure nothing coming out as a result of all the travel.
We worse off now than before he became Premier and claiming that all the meetings from these travels were going to revive Caymans economy.
OMG, we are still waiting desperately!

      • phil says:

Hey, to market the Cayman Islands, what do you suggest?  A no-travel ban?  Sorry, but you don’t sound too bright.

That’s a joke right? If it was not intended as a joke then you might want to lay off the Koolaid.

do you honestly think the uk is going to accept more unaudited accounts? and slap mckeeva on the back for doing a good job?

cayman has failed on its previous promises to the uk…..get accounts upto date and review the civil service!

if it is proven that there is less of a deficit it is only because this gov has done absolutly nothing in the last 2 years with no significant capital expenditure…..

  8. Laura says:

WOW!  CayCompass states: "Cayman entertained more cruise and stayover visitors in 2010 than the previous year and posted the sixth-best totals in the past decade. The tourism industry is showing promising signs of revitalising, as the latest statistics from 2010 indicate an increase in both cruise ship and air arrival numbers,’ said Chairman of the Ministerial Council for Tourism Cline Glidden." CAN’T BELIEVE MY EYES, UDP IS BRINGINGTHINGS BACK TO NORMAL!  AND WE DON’T HAVE A PROPER FACILITY FOR CRUISE SHIPS YET!  THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING!

Mac has blamed the PPM for the recession.  He has spent half his term in office blaming them.

  9. LT says:

    Well done Mac!

  10. unemployed pirate says:

Once again with feeling:  With no records of what gets spent and on what anything said is just heresay.  It could very well be that less money was stolen from publics purse this quarter.  Who other than those had the money last would know?  How do I get a job in the Cayman Govrnment?

    • Lachlan MacTavish says:

You cannot have a plus or a minus when the books have not been balanced for years. If the country has borrowed to keep going then logic would say its a minus.

      • Anonymous says:

I would have a surplus in my bank account as well if I didn’t pay my bills!!!

  11. Jesus on a Surfboard says:

Can we all have a peak at that cocktail napkin that documents the surplus? Don’t we first need to have some known value before we start extrapolating?

  12. Anonymous says:

i think  the magical surplus came from the fees dart paid to govt recently when he purchased the hotel… unless i can see where we got a 17 million $ surplus from i won’t be praising this govt, so don’t think Mac + UDP is doing something right..

  13. Anonymous says:

No, thank God for Dart. I’m sure the stamp duty from his Stan Thomas property went a long way in taking government cofers from deficit to surplus.
Camana Bay lessened the effects of the circa 2000 recession, hopefully his current development projects will do the same during our ongoing recession.

  14. Miller says:

More good news for the Cayman Islands. I am glad Mac and crew are doing something positive for these islands. It is of upmost importance that we balance our books and ensure that we audit all our financial records. Blessings

I was just wondering, what every happen to the Carnival that used to come here?  i ask because you always hear the children saying "i’m bored" "there is nothing to do" "Cayman is so boring" etc… CNS would you be able to add a section on your site that your members can inform the GOVT what WE would like them to spend OUR money on?  I went online and looked up Carnival Rides and Concession stands, the cost of these rides was very shocking to see how reasonable they actually are, the Govt has wasted $$$$Millions$$$$ as it is already, why not put money into something that the People money can be spent on that WE WANT.  As i can remember the carnival would always be packed especailly on the weekends.  This would not only be a benefit to our Mon- Thur in the evenings only and all day on weekends and during summer break from school and school holidays. Just a thought!!!

    • Half-Bred says:

Caymanian to the bone we need to call on Dart for this. Only he can afford to bring a carnival here, at least once every 6 month.
What a wonderful thing that would be again for the kids, and visitors and every one.
CALLING DART, CALLING DART. Please bring a carnival to Caymana Bay for at least two weeks every 6 months. Or once a year. We are bored.

This is indeed excellent news to be FedEx around the globe. On behalf of my family and friends, I commend the work you are doing for your country. It may not be grand, but it is something. CNS, nice pic. You’re doing a good job.

  19. William says:

Let’s just hope that the UK’s FCO keeps up with their bargain or give us slack now that we are showing signs of recovery. To the premier and his associates, I wish them luck.

Come to think of it, if MB continues, this will be the first time in Cayman’s history where you will see the C.I. government improve our financial centre against the high tides of a global recession. Time does tell.  I look forward to a bright future.

“George Town, backbench MLA Ellio Solomon and Ken Jefferson the Financial Secretary will be travelling with the premier on this trip while Rolston Anglin will be Acting Premier in his absence.” LOL – this is cns. Soon you will see them blog about the cost of the trip and why so many of them had to fly along with the premier. Watch how they will forget about the whole “meat” of this article and make it such a sensational critique.

  23. East End says:

Well done UDP! The economic downturn is now becoming an economic upturn. I hope the many of the suggestions in the Millers Report is considered and we are able to FULLY satisfy the UK’s demands on bringing our country back to where it became lost. The UK has given us adeadline – there is no time to waste on processes and enforcing petty restrictive laws on business owners! Sometimes you have to circumvent legal processes, even the local laws to get things done in order to boost our economy, and the Premier has boldly muster his energy to accomplish this for his home. If he brings back the economy to threee better than it was before, like Sir Vassel, he should be knighted in front of those who have always envied him for some strange reason. At times, he has been accused by mindless folk of being a dictator. How can anyone foolishly think he is able to fight the UK and make himself dictator? But as irrational his accusers are, it should be of no concern to him. He will always have the support. You are the only politician that I see who would bravely sing to God in front of hundreds of people, putting God first and giving him the glory – that should tell you something. On behalf of my family, people living in the G.T. district, once again, my blessings to you and your endeavors. From a friend.

  24. mclean says:

Say what you will about Mckeeva Bush, but he is one of the very few Caymanians who truly have a get-up-and-go attitude when it comes to building the Cayman Islands into a Little Rome. With help from connections and friendship with important individuals, the Premier is improving our financial infrastructure, increasing tourism, and still he has managed not to satisfy his opponents on selling the Cayman Islands to every tom, dick, and harry that flashes their gold. To say he does not mean well for his country, is just being cruel!

His deals with Dart has made a great contribution to our way of life. May I say, Camana Bay alone is a place of youthful enjoyment and culture. It is arrayed with beautiful plants and scenery. I recalled how many damned the Premier and even Dart whilst Camana Bay was being constructed. I recalled how they said, “Mckeeva is selling Cayman to Dart.” They have quiet down now since Dart removed himself from becoming develop of the Cruise Berthing Facility.

And this tops the cake! Some of his opponents, have even attend the movies and took photos of themselves at Camana Bay with smiles on their faces, still opposing “the Mac plus Dart association!” Camana Bay is one of the few places on the island where you can hang out and enjoy yourself with your friends. It is spacious and away from the main road and combustion of traffic.

The Premier and UDP team have also made a great deal with Dr. Shetty Hospital. Despite concessions still in the works, no one can say that what is being offered will not benefit us at all. Not only has he manage to better the economy with plain tourism, it looks like he will be the first national leader to introduce a third arm of tourism; i.e., medical tourism that will pump millions of dollars into our economy. He gave us his word that the economy will improve, and look… what can his opponents say now??? It will be amusing to see their faces at Camana Bay when he comes through with all of his campaign promises.

Let’s be frank, while the PPM had there four years in power, how often did you heard from them that they were “creatively” making efforts to introduce new projects to better our economy? How often did you hear from them that that they were doing this or that to better the economy? Not to disregard the PPM efforts, of course they took Education and the Constitution as top priorities whilst they were in power… BUT WHERE WAS THE ECONOMY RATED???

P.S. I love my country and I have nothing against the PPM leaders, but credit has to be given to our leaders when they do something good for the whole populous!

  25. Anonymous says:

What on earth will Ellio and Ken “no job” Jefferson add to the discussion in London? This is utterly astonishing. Ken has a title and no job anymore under the new Constitution but at least he has a slight history (flawed) of being in Cabinet etc. But Ellio? Ellio?
    Ellio?

    • Anonymous says:

What do you mean “but Ellio” maybe you haven’t heard or read of all the good he is doing for Caymanians (open your ears and eyes). He is standing up for all of us and all unna can do is put him down. Sad, sad, sad.

      • Anonymous says:

What good is Ellio doing for Cayman? In the mean time he is driving around in a Mercedes Benz, while there are people who are unemployed and can’t put food on their tables.

    • Anonymous says:

It hurts you that Ellio is doing so well doesn’t it. You need to speak to Dr. Phil.

  26. UCCI student says:

GOOD FOR MAC! I THINK THIS IS GREAT. NOW HOPEFULLY HE WILL RESTORE OUR ECONOMY AND IF CONTINUED, THAT MEANS WE CAN LOWER OUR FEES AND IMPORT DUTIES! Caymanians should look at this as good news for these islands. No one should look down on the Premier’s efforts. Let’s stop this party divide when it comes to our economy! At least he is a MAN OF ACTION and is delivering good results to the QUEEN!

  27. Absolute says:

Thank God for the Premier. This is what we need for our economy.

    • tommy ;o) says:

yep… I think its hard for the Ppm or for any indepedent for that matter to spin the gig on this one. over and over again, I am seeing the man shaking hand-deals, MOU’s with a big grin on his face whereever he goes, and the deficit is gradually closing… this is what the uk want

      • Anonymous says:

No need to spin anything you say. This has been very predictable. First you say things are worse than they are so you can take credit for the miraculous recovery. If that’s not putting a spin on things I’ll vote UDP. I don’t know if going to London to find out what Governor in Cabinet means is ignorance or extravagance but it is definitely embarrassing.

    • sandra says:

Indeed God must get all the glory and credit… can’t see why anyone would disagree with you; we are getting ourselves out of debt.
