Government building not ready until March
(CNS): Despite recent revelations that the Glass House could be making people sick with thelevels of mould and other dangerous pathogens, civil servants will have to stay in it for a bit longer. According to reports on Cayman 27 the move –in date for the move into the new government accommodation building has been pushed back again. Project Manager, Jim Scott has said crews are in the final stages of commissioning the engineering systems and finalizing inspections which must be completed before the contractor, McAlpine, hands over the site to government.
The move was original scheduled for 17 January but inspections and tests were not completed on time. There is no new confirmed move in date, but Scott told the TV news station that the target was for the first people to move into the building in mid-March.

so many people on this thing that clearly have no idea what they are talking about. this is a remarkable looking building and a credit to the contractors involved
All Caymanians should be proud of our new Government building, it is the most beautiful building in Cayman, & best thing is that it will eventually save us millions of dollars in years to come. I LOVE our new building & I am proud to have it as OUR government offices.

Unfortunately, a part of the problem no doubt is the chaos and cost implications caused by the Premier’s U turn decision to let CIMA walk off to Mr Dart right at the very last minute. After the paint was still drying on a specialist and very expensive customised fit out. Shocking incompetence.
So looks like I’m not the only who knows that they are planning to send them to Camana Bay, the classic ol, you scratch my back i’ll scratch yours
Perhaps our dearly beloved UDP Government has fopund a more subtle way of reducing the size of the Civil Service.
What subtle way? They are gutting the Civil Service and filling it with UDP supporters.
Hopefully these clowns do a better job closing the deal than those involved with the Walkers building.

Whilst I can see the sense behind planting the poles underground for new buildings in new areas where there are no existing poles – quite plainly this was not the case and it still beggars belief that in this economy, whilst corners are being cut in order to make ends meet, our government should choose to relocate already existing above ground poles at such great expense. Presumably the portion they have buried is still connected to the portion either side of the building (the remainder of Elgin Avenue) which is still susceptible to being “downed” in a storm……………
It seems to me that the building has been in a position to be occupied for sometime now however, given the tragic state of the government’s finances it looks to an outsider as if they’re deliberately trying to delay the hand over date so that they might tap into the penalty clause which, when it kicks in, is for a considerable sum of money charged per day for each day that McAlpine still has legal ownership of the building.
It seems to be a false economy – how typical of our government – given the state of the Glass House which has now been proven to be a health hazard in addition to the rents being paid for all the scattered government offices around the Island and the inefficiencies that arise as a result.
Perhaps instead of trying to fleece a local contractor to help pay government bills, they might have thought twice before giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to CUC to have them bury the light poles underground outside the new building for no other reason (at least no sensible reason that the public were made aware of) than that they were aesthetically unpleasing…….
Once again it has to be said, “the lunatics have taken over the asylum”
If Government delay any longer with the intention of taking this to court to claim what they seem to view as their per diem lottery win, then the public will simply be witness to the spectacularly incompetent government legal team – such as we witnessed at the time of the Tom Jones debacle.
It’s my understanding the other, and more important, reason for putting CUC poles and lines underground is so there will be no problems with downed lines and loss of electricity when hurricanes come.
Do you recall the problems we had after Ivan? Almost all the poles on the island went down which made getting electricity impossible till the crews came and putthem back up. There’s a very sensible reason for them being underground anywhere they can from now on if it is at all possible.
Underground wiring also looks so much better and is used in upscale neighbourhoods all over the civilised world.
Electrons need to traval from CUC to the glass house so unless all the lines are underground it will not make much difference. Unless they are planning windmills at each side of the glass house but I guess they wouldn’t work in a hurricain either.
I have worked on the site for almost two years and you have hit the nail on the head with your post. The building is definately ready, yet the government reps claim its not. I won’t go into the details of their claims of non completion, but believe me, the building is ready for occupancy. The penalty clause for non completion, which kicked in today, is 10,000 a day….
