Masked robber fires shot

| 18/03/2011

(CNS): What is reportedly the first robbery on Grand Cayman for almost two weeks, the longest period the island has gone since the beginning of the year, took place around 9:30pm in East End last night, Thursday 17 March, when at least one shot was fired. Police said they received a report that a man had been robbed in Fiddlers Way by a masked gunman. The suspect fired a shot (or shots) into the air before making off with a sum of cash and a bracelet, police stated. No one was injured during the incident and uniform, CID and armed officers attended the scene and conducted a search for the suspect but no arrests have yet been made. Police did not say if any evidence of the gunshots, such as bullets or casings, were recovered.

Police stated, however, that since the report, officers have been speaking to the victim and other potential witnesses to establish exactly what took place and said that an update will be provided in due course.

The robbery is the eighteenth of 2011 and follows a robbery on the evening of the 5 March at 3N’s grocery store, Batabano Plaza, West Bay. Police have arrested and charged one man in connection with that incident, in which the masked man, armed with what appeared to be a gun, entered the store around 8pm, threatened staff and demanded cash before making off with what was described as a “small sum of money”.

It so hypocritical, to say the least, when our government can  disperse government  revenue  to churches/edifices onto themselves, for praise and recognition, while the older and under-privileged  are suffering at the hands of Ghadafi.   Lottery gains could be used to educate, train and provide better health care for the less fortunate.  We always like to go searching for better ideas, why not adapt lottery and pull the country out off the red.

Our good old mother country has it, so what is wrong with us having our share of the pie.  Give it a serious thought, we need serious brainstorming.

MacDafi our time has run out for praise and recognition let’s get to the roots of all criminal activities. Your people will be in a better frame of mind while looking at the 2013 Elections with a more positive outlook.

Well there’s a surprise we knew it would only be a matter of time before guns started being fired ….how long now before someone is actually shot and harmed or worse whilst these crimes are being committed.

We were just lucky this time it was not the case!!

It has already happened….they just don’t like anyone remembering it…but trust me..it HAS happened…

The fact that there has been a silence to robberies, could very well mean that the suspects police have now, were the real culprits behind the many robberies committed in the past. If police release due to insufficient evidence, I think they should have those suspects electronically monitored for a time and see what happens. I think too it is significant that after the recent arrests that things has quiet down some bit.

I put every dollar i got that it is more that the core three/four is busy planning.  They likely have seen the increased POLICE small and lucky successes.

I am not convinced that you are right on this.  I hope so…but I seriously doubt it.  Some red-handed catches will immediately halt this.  Until then, we can hope that the Police have waken from their deeeeep slumber.

I think you’re correct, except for the bit that: "red-handed catches will immediately halt this," because some people will always prefer a criminal lifestyle, but like you I’m hopeful.

    • Rorschach says:

What provision under the law do you think there is for electronically monitoring someone who has not been arrested or charged with a crime???    You cannot just slap an ankle bracelet on someone because you "tink dey look suspcious"…and hope you catch them doing something wrong…

Lots of them have prior convictions and could have been subjected to monitoring as part of their sentencing. Not that anyone cared as they were given short terms and let out early.

The time for the crime should be increased and the criminals will understand that no one is going to pass under the microscope.  I addition to increasing the time, everyone should be marched through the town the day of sentencing, post their pictures on a huge board so the citizens can have a good view of the criminals.  I guess, some of our good old christians will say that is inhumane.  Well, most people go to church but that does not mean they are christians.  We hear a lot being said by people in high places and they are far from being christians.

    Who are we protecting,and why?

S.O.S.D.D. These criminals don’t seem to get the message the police ain’t playing with them  anymore they have a helicopter and now they have new dogs(they now have the tools to do the job). Baines seems to have waken up after a year and a half. They will get caught and for what nickle and dimes.Throwing their lives and future away for what chump change?

    • Rorschach says:

The police didn’t need a helicopter and new dogs to do their jobs…these are just shiny new toys they use to distract us from seeing the fact that there are a  majority of police officers from "other" countries who are here to ride around for 8 hours doing as little as required from them, all the while collecting a salary that they are squirreling away for when they "go back a yaard"…..

Listen to what you are writing. The police have a helicopter and now they have new dogs……the police helicopter has been here for over six months has it proven to be effective? No…has it assited in apprehending anyone? No…..has the old K9 Unit ever caught anyone? Maybe a drug bust or two but that was about it. We have had numerous bank robberies, where were the tracking dogs? Shootings, robberies…never hearing about the K9 Unit apprehending anyone…neither has the helicopter…so I doubt their “new toys” is going to make a bit of a differenceh when their old news didn’t work
