Robbery victim fights back

| 25/03/2011

(CNS): Two men who attempted to rob a man on his own doorstep ran off when the victim decided to fight back instead of complying with their demands. The police reported this morning that around 8:40pm last night (Thursday 24 March) a 47-year-old man returned home to his residence in Mahogany Way, Prospect. As he was opening the door of the house he was suddenly confronted by two hooded men, one of whom was in possession of what appeared to be a firearm. The suspects threatened the man, demanded cash and told him to lie down on the ground. The man grabbed hold of the gun, causing one of the suspects to stumble – both hooded men then ran off empty handed.

The man was not injured in the incident and no shots were fired, the RCIPS said.

The suspects were both wearing dark coloured clothing, gloves and had their heads covered by hoods. One was around 5’7” in height, the other 6’0”.

Anyone who was in the area at the relevant time and saw anything suspicious or the suspects running off from the scene should contact George Town CID on 949-4222 or the confidential Crime Stoppers tip-line 800-8477 (TIPS).

  1. Love Cayman says:

If what is reported here is accurate it sounds like these guys had an imitation firearm to me.
They are definitely not experience our things would have definitely turned out different.
They wont try to rob him again!
Anyway I agree we have to stand up and reclaim back our Island and show these want to be criminals or criminals we are no longer going to sit down and let them destroy our Island!

We are at the mercy of the criminals, Cayman have to change its law and star issuing law abiding people who qualify with hand gun lic. As long as the Criminal know that there is no gun in that house he will go in. If they know that there is a good chance that you have a gun they will think twice.

    • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Where the use of such force is necessary, the Firearms Law (2008 Revision) already recognizes the right of persons to own firearms and use them in acts of personal and property protection.

      • citi-zen says:

        Denny,

Does a newly legally permanent resident, have the same rights.?

Can I own a firearm.? If I follow the proper channels.?

      • Anonymous says:

Don’t take everything DW says about gun use at face value.  The Law does not permit the extension of the very limited ability to discharge a weapon in defence of life or limb (but not property).  And it certainly does not extend the law to allow everyone to apply for a gun for the purpose of shooting people on their lawn like this was now Texas.

  3. Dennie Warren Jr. says:

What the victim did was extremely dangerous.  There is a much safer way of effectively repelling armed home invaders…

    • Guns Kill People says:

Now that just is not true.  Arming homeowners is not "safer" because it vastly increases the chances of there being a fatal shooting in the home and a fatal shooting in the event of a burglary or invasion.

you are right  guns dont help .

if it did then it would work in america and they would have less crime

        • Caymanian Patriot says:

if you were correct and he is wrong Switzerland,Canada and other nations which allow / require guns in the home would have similar problems as the US. Although these countries have high firearm ownership they have significantly different amounts of gun crime which indicates the problem is with the mentality of the people. That being said, one could only imagine what the crime rate in the US would be if law abiding citizens were not allowed firearms. Statistics show legitimate gun ownership save many lives in the US. With similar criminal attitudes here as in the US, legal gun ownership is only a smart part of the solution to our crime problem though not the only solution.

      • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Firstly, it’s safer than trying to grab a firearm from the hands of attackers.  Secondly, if "Guns Kill People" then pencils misspell words.

But i thought crime was down?

  5. Dennie Warren Jr. says:

This story’s headline is so unfortunate…

Man of the Year! Stand up job sir.

  7. Anonymous says:

Good for him – I would do the same. If I’m going down, I’m going down fighting.

  8. Anonymous says:

Fantastic….I’d do the same. Why make it easy for these clowns?

    • Lady Ga Ga says:

      Fantastic indeed

BUT who is this big Cartel Weapons dealer in Cayman that the RCIP can’t seem to be able to touch from a distance MUCH LESS TAKE DOWN AND BRING TO JUSTICE.

WHO IS HE? WE WANT TO KNOW WHO THIS BIG SHOT IS THAT IS DEALING ARMS?WEAPONS IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS.

Whoever it is they have a nice connection and a nice arrival and departure thing going for them, could it be XXXXX?

      • HAVE an idea says:

If you want to catch the gun cartel you need to get total control of the port and customs areas.  It is much easier for a customs officer or dock worker to take a bribe than to turn a bad guy in.  Sorry folks, we live on a rock….these weapons are not walking in, they are SHIPPED and FLOWN in.  They arrive with the big boy Caribbean connections.  Start with the cell phone shipments!!!

I think we all are getting fed up with what is happening, but fighting someone with a gun isn’t the best thing to do. Your life isn’t worth material things.

There are some many guns on the Island, don’t you think maybe the police should do some “detective work” and find
out where they are coming from.

  9. Anonymous says:

Not smart. When confronted by two men with a gun, your life is worth much more than whatever money they are likely to steal from you. I’m glad it worked out for this man, but the next person who tries the same thing might not be so lucky.

  10. Night Flyer says:

Good for you, these punks make me sick.Change your rountine.

  11. Anonymous says:

Please folks do not try this at home. That gentleman could have easily lost his life over what? a few dollars and a VCR.

The gun is always faster than the hand and in the hands of a scared robber, anything could happen.

  12. Anonymous says:

CNS, did the man get the gun???

CNS: All the details that the police have released are in the article.

  13. Michel Lemay says:

Well done even though that can turn out to be dangerous as well. It takes a lot of guts sir. No mention if the firearm was recovered as I understand that it’s a thief prized possesion and unfortunatly not enough are recovered to test them for other crime commited. Never the less a story that end’s well. I would advise you to change your patterns now.
