Hitch-hiker mugged in GT

| 16/04/2011

(CNS): A man has been treated at the Cayman Islands hospital for injuries to his face and upper body today after he was assaulted during a robbery in the early hours of the morning. Police say that George Town detectives are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which took place near Funky Tangs store on Sheddon Road and was reported to police around 5:20am Saturday, 16 April. Four men, all believed to be under the age of 25, reportedly robbed and assaulted the victim after picking him up as he was hitchhiking along the West Bay Road. Police did not say if the man was a local resident or visitor to the island but it is understood he was walking along the West Bay Road sometime after 2:16am  when he hitched a ride from four young men in a green sedan car.

The victim was taken to the vicinity of Funky Tangs on Sheddon Road, where he was allegedly assaulted by the occupants of the car and his wallet, cell phone and other personal effects stolen. The suspects were described as Caymanian and under the age of 25, but no other details were given of them or the car in which they were travelling.

Anyone who was along West Bay Road and saw the man getting into a green sedan vehicle sometime after 2:16am or anyone seeing a green sedan vehicle or any suspicion activity in the vicinity of Funky Tangs between 2:16am and 5:22am are asked to contact George Town CID.

Information can be passed to George Town Police Station 949-4222 or the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-8477 (TIPS).

Way to go Baines! How’s your plans working out now? There’s only about 55,000 people in your little kingdom, sort it out man!

Don’t worry, one day those guys are going to pick up the wrong person to mess with!

Just hope this day comes rather sooner or later.

Well so much for the Premier’s remarks about crime not being as bad as we think! Seriously though, I know anything can happen at any time but we need to take precautions. I used to pick up hitch-hikers, mostly only women but nowadays I don’t feel safe picking anyone up and that’s a shame because giving someone a lift used to feel kind of ole school Cayman to me kind of like saying “good morning” to people you see on the street even if you don’t know them.

As for actually hitch-hiking, I wouldnt even risk it. If I don’t have a ride, there’s no bus or taxi then I prefer to stay home than walk the street after dark. Luckily I have that choice but its unfair for people who work shifts or need to be out late and may need a ride.

I agree with the remarks above, the youngsters out committing these crimes lack ambition and discipline. They are spoiled and have this sick sense of entitlement. I don’t think jail time is a useful deterrent. Shame them, make them sit their backsides out in front of the court house wearing signs stating their names, ages and crime. Sit them out there ALL day so we can see their faces and know what they did. But I guess they have to be caught first!

Does Mac ever have press conferences where he takes questions? Or does he just make pronouncements?

I would love to see him try and explain this and the stabbing robbery at Calicos away with statistics, not to mention that woman that is still missing, and the ganja they seized last night.

He’s a bit like that Iraqi politician who denied the US was entering Baghdad while everyone could plainly see the tanks in the background.

This is yet  another case or our youth taking   out  their  frustration on a poor  expat  ,instead of the leaders of the last few years whos main concern has been the enrichment of themselves and their cronies

Are you serious???  The "frustration" of people who commit these crimes is that they can’t have everything right now without the inconvenience of having to go to school or even just work for it.  But these are not people who want to actually work 9 to 5 as it’s easier to just take it from someone who has earned it.

The only possible mitigating excuse would be that they had no parenting to instill morals.  They are still cowardly punk pieces of crap however their parents are as much to blame as them.

If you can catch him in Cayman, would someone please tell Mac about this…

  7. Pastor Bucket says:

So which irresponsible moron do we speak to at The Compass for the taunting headline of "No robberies for 2 weeks"?

    Apparently a tourist was stabbed & robbed @ Calicos…again…

This has been going on for years but seems to have been covered up in the past. The news story reminds me of a friend of mine who was nearly beaten to death after hitch-hiking on West Bay Road, a couple of a weeks before Ivan. He was picked up when hitch-hiking,after the bars closed, on West Bay Road. The occupants of the car, young Caymanians I am sad to say, drove him to Safe Haven (ironically, given the name) where they proceededto beat him with baseball bats so badly that he needed many serious operations to rebuild his face. What was particularly worrying in this case was that the thugs stole his phone and made calls to their friends on the same phone after the incident but, despite this being pointed out by my friend’s wife, the police failed to follow up on these leads. It was seen by them as just another case of “expat bashing” – their term not mine. Unfortunately any interest in pursuing this case seemed to disappear when Ivan hit our island a couple of weeks later and everyone suddenly had other things to preoccupy themselves.

There was also the case of the hitch-hiker, a few days later, who deliberately had his ankles shattered by thugs with base ball bats after accepting a lift when walking home from Fidel Murphys…and many more such incidents.

Do not hitch-hike it is not safe and has not been for many years!

so he was on road at 2am and it was reported to police at 5a!! that is rough!

if they wanted to gang and rob him, they aint have to beat him so

Now now now, remember the crime isn’t that bad!!!!! “QUOTE” from your Premier!!! LOL LOL LOL

I wish that these wana be thugs realize that when they hurt someone like this, they not only hurt that person but they need to realize that, that they hurt someones: father, brother, uncle, etc. I wish they would place themselves in that persons shoes. Also, I wish they realized that they may be taking from someones who has less than them just as how this person didnt have a transportation and they were fortunate enough to have it. I wonder ifthey think it makes there mothers or families proud. If you are in dire need of money you work for it honestly. Stealing just shows you are too weak and lazy to put in any effort to make an honest dollar. Its sad that 10 year olds find ways to make an honest dollar but grown adults cant! Its funny because these guys are just trying to prove to each other they are tough but they are just providing each other with entertainment and ruining their own lives.

    • Shock and Awe says:

I don’t think it makes sense to hope these guys realize anything.  Have you ever looked in the eye of a chicken?  There is so little comprehension there it’s frightening.  Same mentality.

  12. JJ says:

At times, I hitch-hike, and I can tell you I use my common-sense. If I see four men in a vehicle that I don’t know, right away I would think of being outnumbered. My survival instinct would tell me not to take the ride; especially, if I am the one sitting at the front and three guys would be sitting behind me! People need to use their common-sense before hitching. Most of the time, the time it takes me waiting for a bus, I can walk my way home safely. There is no need for me to be standing in one spot, hitching a ride. Walk while you hitch! Hitching rides at odd hours of the day, being a woman especially that likes to wear less clothing thats revealing and hitching ride, and hitching rides with more than one person in the car, is playing it risking. Again it all has to do with common-sense and your self-preservative instinct. I usually hitch ride with people I know. Just my 2cent

Stinking young punks. Caymanians too. Out of order little fops.

Caymanian parenting ‘skills’ producing more shiftless micreants.

So I dont want to hear nuttin bout no "furreigners" being the problem!

And stop harbouring and condoning this mess! these are your sons, cousins and brothers. But you dont say nothing when you know better. But hear wha – that was another Caymanian that they did this to.

Very well said!!!!. I agree with your sentiments completely. The sad thing is, these “kids” lack role models, discipline, ambition, and worst of all any fear of being caught!!. But worst of all, when these types of offenders ARE caught, the courts are not giving out big enough sentences to even make young people stop and think before committing the crimes.

Applause to both of the above posters.  Very well said…time in jail seems to be a right of passage for some here.  There appears to be no negative stigma associated with it.  Instead there are justifications such as "frustration" over lack of opportunity for the pathetic and lazy punks.
