Cops seize 2 guns at GT house

| 06/06/2011

(CNS): Police say they have taken two guns off the street following an operation at a George Town house this weekend. No details of where the property was located or what arrests have been made were offered but  police said enquiries were continuing and more information about the seizure of the firearms would be released soon. The operation, which involved officers from the CID, uniform and USG, took place at the undisclosed location on Saturday afternoon, 4 June. Detective Inspector Lauriston Burton said the seizure was connected with efforts to deal with the recent rise in robberies.

“The operation was mounted as part of overall strategy to tackle the rise in armed robberies and reduce the number of firearms available for use by the criminal element. The public and those who have these weapons can expect to see much more of this type of activity,” Burton said. “This should be seen as a clear warning to the criminals who use guns that we are going after them and, when we seize the guns they use or hide for others, that could lead to them being put behind bars for a minimum of ten long years," the officers added.

Anyone with information about gun crime in the Cayman Islands should call their local police station. Alternatively, call the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-8477 (TIPS) and your information may make you eligible for a cash reward.  In an emergency always call 911.

A part of our problem lies in the recruitment of bodies/police officers.  Why are we recruiting new police officers from crime ridden countries? It is impossible to recruit the local people who know the areas and the people who are causing problems every day.

Having made reports to police officers (expats) on many occasions and seeing no results, I came to one conclusion and that was, every nationality looks out for their own.  I had a stupid police officer drive a police car into my carport, blowing the horn.  He was just lucky that day that I excused his uncalled for behaviour, or he would've been taken out from there instead of driving out.  Just to let the public understand how those uniforms believe they can trespass and the stripes give them the right to do so.

I know, when everyone quits coming and no money is being spent (no jobs) we can't literally just starve out anyone who relies on the local economy. Then all of us who derive our income from offshore will inherit a peacful island full of skeletons, abandoned cars and empty houses.

A place where the robbers have guns and the police do not is not a good place to live……….. and not a good place to be a policeman.

Yes, I noticed the Hammer back too… that's so the RCIP can shoot themselves in the foot with it

How do you think firearms come onto this island?

It is either through the airport and ports; or, by way of canoe or boat.

Is there a way to fight this smuggling?

Yes.  Better security and screening at our ports, and more government funding in the area of border surveillance and interception.

Apparently, money is being spent on other things like getting more police officers here, and little is being done about equipping and properly managing the police officers we have now.

Sounds like we have our priorities backward.

Agreed…..how about implementing a radar/sonar system that is actually run by individuals that are closer than Miami.

How can you seize illegal guns without arresting someone for possessing them?

"Ungrateful", "Give the cops a break" ? You guys don't ask for or expect much from the police for do you? Have you ever been robbed and had the most junior policeman come to your house 2 hours later and go about the investigation like he is ready off the back of a cereal box? Have you ever reported a crime and followed to make sure something was done about and nothing was done about it. You see we don't have a real police force so you don't know what you are missing. If you lived in different places you would have something to compare it too. They are supposed to protect and serve. They can't protect without being armed. Would you respond to an armed robbery if you didn't have a gun? They are supposed to be out on visible patrols.  They CAN pull over someone for just cause. Tint too dark, not indicating, erratict driving. blue lights and all other sorts of flaunts of the law. Drive much? You would be surprised what you may find if they just started pulling people over for breaking driving laws…law breakers are law breakers and they are not afraid of the police when they drive or rob a gas station. Do you ever see the police out much? I don't….if you new the amount of patrols cars in the force you'd think you would see them all the time. Unless they are all in West Bay and I don't know it I could be wrong but I never see them down my way

An absence of literacy aside, the writer makes a pertinent point – we are losing (and rapidly) the very thing which distinguished us from other destinations. The police, under the direction of H.E. the Governor, need to begin to address this horrible situation, and start nailing some heads to the mast pronto, or this good ship's going down, and fast.

I wonder who in the RCIPS failed to make the pistol on the left safe before taking the photo – it looks like there's a magazine in the weapon and the hammer's back ready to fire.

    • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Since we cannot see inside the magazine well, it’s not possible for us to say whether a loaded magazine is inside it, but I do agree with you that the pistol should not be in battery with the hammer chocked, but that’s not all, neither should the revolver be in battery.

  11. I wonder ? says:

I wonder if the RCIPS will perform forensic testing on these two guns to see if the are a match to any of the slugs collected at all recent armed robberies and all past crimes where firearms were used, imcluding murders and cases that have gone cold??????

    I wonder…………..hmmmmm

    I wonder………….hmmmmm

Unless it was an abandoned house, which I very much doubt, every single resident of that location should be charged with firearms possession until someone gives up the goods on who own the guns.

If someone's granny is in jail on a gun possession charge, you can be sure someone will be owning up pretty quickly or granny will be squealing her head off about who's gun it is.

Time to turn the screws, RCIP, if you really intend to get a handle on this thing.

Bold words Inspector Burton however the continue damage and degrading of Cayman’s once safe image and society continues and the prepared script does very little to appease Cayman concerns about this very dangerous situation we are confronted with today. How we prevent and stop such unlawful acts from occurring seems to have taken a back seat to showcasing your skill in dealing with the situation after the fact. That “Overall strategy” as you put it is clearly reactive and not proactive as your other colleagues constantly tout in the media. However please continue in your good efforts to rid this place of the scourge of unlicensed guns.Congrats

Thank God you detectives, uniform and USG have finally waken up.

You knew for a long time who these criminal are, and who have possession of the illegal guns… on this little piece of rock …100 sq. miles. You should have been  sweeping these supected  areas for a long time now, dont you have dogs that can detect gun steel, and gun powder, I'm sure these guns have been fired before.

Where is this Lauriston from…he seems to got his shit together. Lets clean up the Illegal guns and jail them all.
