PPM invites all to join demo

| 27/06/2011

(CNS): PPM leader Alden McLaughlin is calling on the people to come out on Tuesday morning and show their concern about the way they are being governed as well as their opposition to developments such as the oil refinery and the East End Sea Port. The demonstration is being led by the opposition and the independent member and is supported by a number of other community activists, such as the Concerned Citizens Group and Save Cayman. The opposition has said the goal of the march is to show government that people are worried not just about the recent announcement of various inappropriate developments but the current standard of governance.

The leader of the opposition, who will be leading the march on parliament, said that after this weekend’s events the protest was even more significant.

“Given the recent revelations, there is even more need for the people to express how they feel about the kind of governance we have at present,” McLaughlin told CNS on the eve of the march, as he referred to the claims by him and the member for North Side that a current police investigation over financial irregularities concerns the country’s premier.

The demonstration will begin at the Cricket Pitch near Smith Road and the protestors are expected to begin marching at noon before arriving at the Legislative Assembly at 12:45pm, where members of the opposition and other groups will be voicing their concerns.

The demo comes on the heels of a separate peaceful pray and protest held in East End on Saturday, which was held to show the community’s opposition to the proposals by Joseph Imparato to develop a commercial port. This has been dubbed the ‘mega quarry’ as a result of the now widespread belief that its primary purpose is to remove millions of dollars worth of fill from the site at High Rock.

The demonstration is expected to attract a significant number of people but there will be many that may not attend as a result of their position as government employees or fear of ramifications. As a result, the Young Progressives have collected messages and comments from those who will not be able to publicly demonstrate. However, PPM members Aden McLean and McLaughlin as well as the North Side MLA Ezzard Miller have pledged to offer their support to anyone who faces recriminations as a result of their participation in the march.

Although they cannot offer any participant any guarantees in respect of their jobs or possible discrimination caused by taking part, they pledged to stand by victims of any retaliation. “The truth is that, unfortunately, there are limits to the protection which is provided by law to the citizens of this country who wish to exercise their democratic right to demonstrate,” McLean said.

Miller, who, along with East End PPM member Arden McLean, has been leading the charge against the proposed comercial port development said there were no guarantees or protection for those taking part in this protest and pledged his support to the people he described as pioneers. “That is what they are,” he said. “That is what it will take to move this country forward as a democracy.”

Following authorization for the demonstration from the RCIPS from 11:30am to 3pm, the south bound lanes of a number of roads will be closed to traffic.

Smith Road, Hudlah Avenue the junction of Goring Avenue and Elgin Avenue, Shedden Road near Anderson Square, Cardinal Avenue and Edward Street, Fort Street by the Town Clock and Fort Street and North Church Street by the traffic lights will be closed and police are urging all road users to be vigilant during the march and take care while using the roadways.

    What did the march accomplish?

  2. NotSoFast says:

Re the low turnout – if they had stuck to the original point – the horrific EE Quarry and fake Port – they would/could have had thousands as predicted earlier. It was lumping in too many other things – "being against everything" – and on top of that, political opportunists trying to make it about themselves – That's why I stayed away.

  3. The lone Haranguer says:

It was nice to see Grannie and Grandpa get out the house and got a nice ride into town and some food. Beautifull, now what about some ideas to get jobs PPM !!!

  4. Optimist says:

From the onset, let me state that I too oppose the East End seaport/quarry.

However, after looking out my office window today- I was both shocked and not suprised to see the turn out. If this is any true indicaton of the support or lack thereof for the reasons for the march, then it is my suggeston that the organizers are grossly disgusted at the turn out.

One truly has to wonder the merit of this "march". Was it done to truly oppose the seaport, other developements or was it done to intensify the ego of 3 politicians- who by the way are just as self-serving and arrogant as the Premier.

All the 'marchers' excercised their democratic right to march and I applaud them BUT with that said- one really has to wonder what Ezzard, Alden and Arden are really thinking this afternoon? Was this a successful as they hoped? Was the turnout as good as they wished?

After all that I have said- 2013 is the year of the TRULY independent candidate and I predict from now that NEITHER the PPM or UDP will gain a majority to form a government.

Independent means just that and Ezzard CANNOT claim to be independent as he has aligned himself with the PPM. If you wanna be independent, organize your OWN march and even if you have to walk alone then you integrity remains in tact.

    • Against the Oil Refinery says:

Yup I am against the Seaport/Quarry and Oil Refinery.  I turned up as I promised I would – not for any political party but for CAYMAN.  I was most disappointed to see this turn into more of a political rally than addressing individually the real issues at hand (the actual planned projects themselves) and people's feelings about those projects.  But I made a point of going upand stating what I objected to, and that I did not support either party and was more interested in Cayman and the wellbeing of its people.

    • bradley says:

      lol

The march was not a protest… it was more like a parade!  And the number of people there were less than 300 people. I don't how Gilbert got 600, hearing him speak on Radio Cayman.

After all is said and done, was this march worth it – when not one of these politicians have suggested solutions or recommendations to better our economy.

What  is really sad about the opposition is no one seems to say….we do not like your idea but our idea is this. I wonder why i should follow them when they virtually have not given us one single brand new" top class "idea on how to improve cayman. How  useless are they ? I will only come to the demonstration that will have better ideas on new projects.

  6. Lachlan MacTavish says:

I see there are several posters who are pushing the "be careful this demonstration situation will bring the country down". This is so far from the truth and reality. Major leadership change is the only thing that will save the country. Cayman cannot continue to be governed in the manner that Mr. Bush believes is the right direction. The world will be impressed with Cayman when proper leadership starts to steer the country towards slow stable recovery. The heat in da kitchen is turned up and Mr. Bush is getting warm. People need to continue to press for transparency and proper good governance. The deflections, spinning and counter accusations will come from Mr. Bush because that is his political model. First Cayman Bank disappeared, hopefully other issues will come to light and not vaporize.

    Time for change.

My fellow caymanians…no one will develop these islands but ourselves– we need to think and think wisely as time will not always be on our side. When you think globally how the world is changing  with europe and the US in a financial  mess. Our options are very limited as far the foreign investment in concerned. The Chinese are the world's leading lenders to goverments all around the world including the USA. When it comes to large infrastuctural engineering they are doing top class work worldwide and inthe United Kingdom as well. Let us reason together and not throw accusations at one another for in the end we shall need these projects to sustain our future generations to come. This is the sad truth ofthe matter.

Let us also support and not talk down our local men and women who have the RESOURCES and know how to invest in developing cayman. We cannot sit on the sidewalks all day and expect to see growth to our economy.

  8. Real World says:

200 demonstrators is nowhere near a strong enough show of opposition. After breathing a big sigh of relief, McKeeva must be laughing his socks off!  If he'd known only 200 people were going to turn out he would have probably kept his big mouth shut before the rally. Overall, this demonstration has been a huge flop and, in an oblique way, mandates Bush to do whatever he wants to do.  If this is the total sum of his opposition, he now knows he has absolutely nothing to worry about!

  9. Anonymous says:

I just a walked past the demo – from all the hot talk i was expecting to see thousands – couldn’t have been 200 souls there – lot of negativity and citizens against virtually everything. Am all for expressing your democratic voice and am not a fan of the East End port but blindly being anti everything is pure politics and should be called out as such. Development creates job opportunities, job opportunities create wealth and security, wealth and security allow for education and education allows for creating your own job opportunities and destiny for yourself, your children and their children Doing nothing creates exactly that, nothing. Politicians against everything are doing the people a disservice and in fact holding you back. I carried on walking.

Rather than anti this anti that anti everything – that is pure politics – how about fresh ideas, solutions, even politicians?

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

Doesn't matter who is doing it.  The old Cayman way of doing things is not getting things done, is wasting the countries money and is never ending.

If Cayman is not ready to try something NEW  like new Caymanian leaders (not the same old tired old time tried and failed guys) or UK takeover, clean house, start over, or ANYTHING else  Its only a matter of time.  A good country is earned not given and it is a work in progress.

  13. Subway Cookie says:

Aaah boy, I wish people would educate themselves before posting.  if you were at the demonstration held last weekend you were aware that people were told to wear WHITE and not any color which could be associated with any political party.  That is the same advice given to those who intend to march today.  Yes this demonstration is supported and co-ordinated by the opposition: 1.they are the opposition therefore it is their job to OPPOSE 2. who the heck else has been co-ordinating? Instead of moaning on here about the PPM presence why havent any of YOU organised something?

I don't support party politics in Cayman.  However, even if the tables were turned and it was McKeeva and the UDP organising the demonstration against the 'mega quarry' I WOULD STILL BE THERE AND SUPPORT IT because it is a worthy cause.  Stop letting the irrelevancies cloud the issue.  I said it yesterday and I will say it again.  I don't need to provide proven scientific evidence as to why this project should not go ahead.  There IS value in nature and while I support the other projects such as the dr Shetty hospital and the IT prjoect I OPPOSE THIS ONE.  It is my right to.

  14. Whodatis says:

I just received an interesting bit of news.

It appears that MANY PRIVATE SECTOR working professionals are being BANNED from participating in this protest due to the forwarded reason of the wearing of work uniforms!

So far at least 3 individuals from 3 different intistutions have informed me that the issue of the march was not addressed at all (within their institutions) until this morning when many received internal memos that staff members are NOT PERMITTED to participate in this demonstration due to fact that they may / will appear in work uniforms.

I encourage all Caymanians to defy such ridiculous reasoning and exercise your democratic right as a member of free country.

Strength is in numbers. Gather your colleagues together this lunchtime and at the very least, join us at the Legislative Assembly at 12:15 p.m.

This is not the time to be passive and afraid, history will be made this afternoon in the Cayman Islands – on what side of this historic day doyou wish to go down upon?

Be you UDP, PPM, Independent of just an ordinary Caymanian concerned about both the legacy of our foreparents and the future of our children … see you ALL out there!

     – Whodatis

….and there were people parctipating who work in uniforms but were clever enough to bring along a white top and swapped out their uniform top for that white top before joining the march. I guess it is all about how badly you want to do something, but Caymanians only want to sit in the AC, complain and have somebody else doing it for them.

I was at the march – I am not Caymanian but like to stand up for what I believe, and I was embarrassed to see how few people joined the march compared to the amount of people I hear running their mouth against this project on a daily basis.

      • Ditto says:

Yup I was surprised too – I expected a far bigger turnout and can only express disappointment at those who never turned up – for whatever reason.

    • anonymous says:

      Yeah,

People afraid to demonstrate because they wear uniforms and can be identified, in fear of retribution?

Well I'll be go ti chuch!

Communism is here Oh Yeah! is that why we have to pay the Chinese to bild our berthing docks  instead of some other local company or democratic source?

Oh I forgot they're also training our dear leader how to be a really strong dictator too! People live in fear under the Chinese, they can't even worship God for fear of being jailed or killed? Why would a so called christian believer associated himself with such low life? and he don't understand why we want him out yesterday?

I'm getting sick of this party foolishness. When next election comes, I am voting in all Independents – that way it is a better chance that they will work together for the people's interest.

    • Anonymous says:

Vote in independents and watch them form "cliques" after election day. Party politics was here before PPM and UDP were ever formed. Remember turtlegate? Ohh when that turtle meat starts to bubble in the pot!

Polititians need allies to get things done. That's how they get "ayes" and "nays" in the LA when they need them. They have to compromise and bargain this in order to get that. Sad but true. They are all the same and will not cut off their nose to spite their face.

Sorry Alden, I can't march, because not ALL PROJECTS I OPPOSE!  I don't see anything wrong with the Public Beach expansion and Darts development there.

    • Anonymous says:

This is our problem now. As Caymanians there is no solidarity. I urge you to reconsider. I too do not oppose all the projects however there is strength in numbers if you make no stand at all as you are suggesting then ALL the projects will go through. Are you in agreement the direction in which the Premier is taking us? If you truly agree with this statement then you are correct to not attend but if you are as offended as I am by all the shady back deals, the absence of due process and law, the lack of ethics and integrity, the absence of critical thinking and the lack of real solutions for the betterment of this country then you should attend.

Mckeeva has also thrown down the gauntlet when he public stated that his resolve his stronger than that of the will of the PEOPLE. No Leader should ever have the gall to utter those words whether stated directly or indirectly!

    • Anonymous says:

If you support one project and are against all the rest you should be there and make it known which you support.  I am for the IT park, the Shetty hospital and the Dart development but against everything else, especially the way the Premier is running this country and its people.  I'll be there and I'll make sure my feelings are noted.

This march would have more of an effect if it wasn't the PPM and Ezzard leading it. Ezzard made me sick to my stomach this morning on the talk show. he is so arrogant, pompous and a know it all. It is always his way, no openmindedness at all.

I am against some of the things as well but I am not going out to support either the PPM or Ezzard. They offer no solutions or alternatives but always find fault with everything. they are supposed to be leaders not complainers.

Discussing these issues in a forum where the public can ask questions and be fully informed is entirely consistent with the job of an MLA and is to be applauded. Miller is earning his keep. Similarly the Government and the Opposition have their scheduled slots on the radio.

What you should be complaining about are those MLAs who contribute absolutely nothing to the governing of this country either by way of public discourse or otherwise and are paid handsomely from the public purse. I'll give you a hint: one is from WB.

This is the kind of small minded thinking that keeps us back.

I will be going to the demonstration today to oppose the East End quary/port, the oil refinery, the North Sound channel and the moving of seven mile beach road.

And I will be uniting in opposition with Save Cayman, Save East End, other environmental and tourism groups and the PPM and Ezzard Miller and other concerned individuals.

I am not a PPM or Ezzard Miller supporter however in this very important case our positions are aligned and I am not going to stay home and sulk because I do not like Ezzard or Alden or whoever.

There is too much at stake Cayman!

Join the the protest today if you oppose the crazy way our country and natural resources are being governed.

No one should go out to march this is a facade, when the real march would have been effective the PPM did not call for one or encourage the other.  The golden opportunities were:

    1. The Status Grants  – Giveaways of 2003
    2. When Chuckie wanted us to march against selling off the Government Administration Building and the changes to the Immigration Law that have now created the pile of mess with our immigration and people

I would encourage people to stay home and pray to God for devine intervention and the coming of Her Majesty's Government to bring back law and order to these islands.

Anyway … everyone, be sure to add your person to the represenation of the concerned collective of the Caymanian people by coming out to the march today.

Be you UDP, PPM, Independent or consider yourself as simply a concerned Caymanian – be there!

This is NOT a "political" issue(s) – this is about the future of Cayman.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes its about politics – its about letting all our politicans, regardless of political background know that we WILL protect our country and people even if they won't.  But more importantly, its about country so be loyal and be there and let all our politicians, present and future, know they can no longer trample all over us and not be held accountable for their actions and stupidity.

          • Anonymous says:

Yes it is about all those thing regarding the future direct of the country…politics. It is important that people realize what they are doing and take responsiblity instead of sitting back.

But do not allow yourself to be used by self serving politicians who may have an agenda to which you do not agree.

When you support these protests held by politicians ask them what they will do differently? Hold them accountable as well.

Do not follow anyone blindly or enter into the mob mentality.

I for one doubt that Ezzard or the Opposition have any answers beyond bashing the UDP.

        • Whodatis says:

Of course the PPM and Ezzard view this as a political move, they are after all politicans by profession.

However, everyone that comes out does so for their own personal reasons and convictions.

Are you coming? If not, what are your reasons for that decision?

Lastly, do those reasons outweigh the future implications of some of these proposed projects for the Cayman Islands?

    • Anonymous says:

I agree with you that the irrevocable Status Grants of 2003 are the worst thing that ever happened here. What I understood at the time was (perhaps on recommendation of the Law Society) was that, by the time it went to court, the government which would have ended up being taken to task would have been the PPM government. Maybe there should have been a march then but there are a multitiude of reasons to have a march now.

    • Anonymous says:

Well if you sit on your backside and do nothing, how the heck do you expect Her Majesty's Government to know there's a problem?  Its never too late – please turn up – its not about supporting either party its about standing up for your rights; your country and your people.  It'll also be a wake-up call to all politicans (regardless of which party) that the people have a voice too – and will damn sure make it heard if the politicans try and ignore them.

People, you have got to get past the party politics and see that what the UDP is proposing is ALWAYS bad for Cayman. Every idea that they've proposed since XXX the electoral votes in 2009 has caused public uproar. Doesn't that say something to you? Just as the user 'Dred' stated previously, "UDP does not care about you or me they only care about BIG BUSINESS." That is 1,000% CORRECT!

The UDP, and McKeeva in particular, only want to talk about Big Money, not small business. Notice how they never talk about crime? XXXXX Why do you think they're trying to sell every square inch of Cayman to Dart – XXXX. Of course the PPM has its flaws as well. They may have been too ambitious with certain projects, and the funds could've been used more sparingly, but look at what they've done, people. Every cent that the PPM spent, whether it was too much or not, is evident in the amount of projects they've produced. How much of the government's money can you verify that went into 20-30 of McKeeva's $50,000 business trips to exotic places that have yet to invest in Cayman. And why is a guy with no highschool diploma, not only RUNNING THE COUNTRY (???), but meeting with world-class engineers regarding the cruise berthing facilities? Why are you following someone who is so crass, has no class, does not know how to speak to people, threatens the media for publishing the truth, and insults Caymanians whenever we speak against his airheaded ideas?

I say we try our best to do away with McKeeva [FOREVER AND EVER, AMEN!], elect a leader that actually cares about Caymanians and who is also sensitive to our need for expat labour, but does not try to pervert the system by creating an expat constituency by giving them status as he did in 2003. If you [WEST BAYERS] keep voting that man in, you are going to destroy this country and there will be nothing great to pass on to our children. Shame on you for selling your vote for a small loan and a washing machine! Yes, your granny needs medicine and a hospital bed, but what about the rest of the country? Your own selfishness is screwing it up for everyone else!!! Stop the insanity.

They need to expand that investigation XXXX. Start with the First Cayman Bank scandal, revoke all of the unworthy statusholders from 2003, XXXX. And why is a former politician from Barbados being paid $30,000 of our money to write our Budget Speech when government has dozens of capable people in Government Information Services and the Portfolio of Finance that can do the job for FREE!!! XXXXX

There has got to be a better way. McKeeva Bush IS NOT THE WAY. Everyone else in the UDP are mere Puppets (notice that they don't say a word whenever McKeeva gives a speech).

Sever the head and the tail will follow.

It's about what is best for Cayman, and it is BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that the UDP does not give a damn about this country other than to wrap it up in a bow and sell it to the highest bidder. Forget about the PPM and whether or not Alden has an ego. He was not the best choice to lead that party anyway, so I'm not sure how things will turn out. I only know that PPM has never proposed any status grants or gone to bed with any known vulture investors such as Dart and Michael Ryan. That's where the clear difference lies. If we could go back to single members, that would be great, but as we have to choose from what's available, UDP is NOT the choice you want to make. EVER! xxxx

  23. Hello Please says:

If I join this, I'm in it for the "Saving of Cayman". Not this political party opposition nonsense. Pure conflics and all the leaders seem too hot headed to ever come to agreement. Money, Money, Money, Greed. Come on now.

I agree that the people need to demonstrate their dissapointment with the way our greedy politicians have been so self-serving for the past decade.  However, PPM or UDP it is this party system (modeled on the Eastern Caribbean) that has gotten us into this mess and I'd rather not see it led by the opposition, but rather simple citizens groups.

Abolish the party system and let's get back to running a tiny island with accounting (dont they make software for this?) and making the civil service accountable!

All the ministries need a house cleaning, period.  Start with education…it is the fat cats there running the show for too long that allow sub-standard teaching and poor test results to flourish.  If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, but I demand better education and that does not mean buildings.

We have way too many civil servants collecting paychecks on "sick leave" that have not worked in over 90 days, it is time to give them 90 days notice or go on permanent disability at 60% pay…(better be able to prove it too).

We need to cut the fat, make civil servants pay for half their health care, and take THAT money and put it into vocational training.  We need to examine all govt contracts where a local may be trained in succession planning, and we need a leader with some backbone to make some logical and clear decsisions!!!

I am confused, but convinced that none of the MLA's and political party affiliations, are in the best interest of the Caymanian people. Party politics is has already divided much of Cayman, and the UK I will never and can never trust. We will destroy our own country with throwing allegations of corruption against each other. It has to stop, people!  This is not Cayman. People just don't vote straight without knowing who they are voting for. People just don't join parties that have not been transparent as to what they stand for. What is wwrong with you people!!! True Caymanian people are not followers!

It is evident that people must have the right to air their views by peaceful means, but the truth is is that this “demo” as it is now being called is only by those persons who are ppm and independent members followers. These people do not represent the majority of the voting populace, and neither do the persons who voted or posted in the on line sham.

ppM indeed better beware their chances were becoming slimmer and slimmer and that’s my opinion.

I will be there and I am against both parties.  I think the pary system is one of the causes of our current problems.

I also feel we need to speak out agains the wrongful path Mac is taking our country down.

Nothing go so – most of the (many) people I know that are going (including myself) are not PPM or independent – unless you mean going independently of any particular political party.

    • Yes... says:

so instead of following politicians like sheep, go there to make a point and stand up for what you believe in.  As I keep saying, its not so much about politics, its about CAYMAN!  I don't support either party but I intend to be there just to demonstrate my disapproval and discontent at the way things are going in Cayman, in addition to protesting against some of these mad developments that are being proposed.

Yea, right! you don't spport neither Government, but you will join PPM protest…you really think Caymanians stupid.

Now you don't like the way things going in Cayman, my friend for the last 35 years these same mad developers, made it possible for  your nice house and  your SUV, and God only knows what else they made possible for you. Now all of you go and show your gratitude…with the protest. ungreatful hatemongers.

        • LMAO says:

My dear, I don't live in a nice house and I don't own an SUV – I rent a small place in the Eastern districts and I travel by bus!  Many of us are turning up not as supporters for either party, but to protest against the planned Oil Refinery and East End Port, amongst other things.  As for gratitude, I'll give credit where its due – personally I've no objection to the Dart proposal, the tech park or Shetty hospital but you can be damned sure I object to the Port/Quarry and Oil Refinery – and if we manage to stop it – in years to come, hopefully your children will show gratitude to us for helping to preserve the island for them.

          Ignorance is bliss oui?

Throwing corruption??? If you don't know what's happening right here in ourcountry you have your head in teh sand and so far in the sand I'm surprised you're not speaking Chinese.

We need to clean house once and for all. I am not for PPM but I dislike UDP more. UDP does not care about you or me they only care about BIG BUSINESS. They all but destroyed so many small businesses here just for big business to come in.

Don't get me wrong I know that you MUST do somethings that don't sit right with everyone but you don't sell everyone down the river for it. At the end of the day they will go home and we will be stuck with whatever they leave behind.

"We will destroy our own country with throwing allegations of corruption against each other".

I think you should read the article that reveals that it as a member of the Judiciary who referred this matter to the Governor who referred it to the police. It has nothing to do with the political party affiliations. That is disinformation by McKeeva.

If there is corruption then it should be rooted out.
