Government offers summer jobs to local students

| 07/07/2011

(CNS): Two months of paid work with government is on offer for students from Year 10 and above in the Summer Students’ Employment Program. A release from the Premier’s Office on Thursday morning said students would be placed within various government agencies for the two-month summer holiday period to provide them with paid employment. “Government is delighted to be able to assist students with employment over the summer and, in return, will receive valuable service from the future leaders of these Islands,” McKeeva Bush stated.  The initiative is available to college and university students studying locally or overseas, as well as high school students.

Anyone interested in the programme can contact the Office of the Premier (dawn.mclean-sawney@gov.ky or by phoning 244-2419) to obtain more information.

    People!!!!!

Just be thankful he woke up on the 'right' side of the bed!

Gosh you all are so hard to please…

This is a fantastic programme. Now all I have to do is go to the University of South-West-North Tampa, Florida to only swiftly fall into the nice safety net of employment we call the Civil Service.

    EPIC!

Once again it seems the Premier's Office has made a "royal proclamation" without bothering to discuss it with anyone or let anyone else know what is planned and so… the contact person is on leave (probably something they had planned for quite some time).

Ridiculously incompetent if you ask me.

Very good idea, in fact this should be a yearl initative.  My only question is why should the Premier's Office take it on and not  the Ministry of Education, Training and Labour?

Because its the Premier's job to take responsibility for everything that is good and blame the past government for everything that is bad? Duh.

I am ALL in favour of summer work, and began the habit myself when I was 13.  However, I am concerned that this programme sends all the wrong messages.  Students should have to apply and go through at least some process of interview or discussion of what tasks will be performed. This should not be an exercise in hanging around in the air conditioning being paid.  I know we need to raise the next generation of civil servants, but I'd like it to be different than the one we have now!

Damn if you; damn if you dont; these people just cannot be satisfied.  In this era of technology here we have people complaining that the contact person is out of office; well getting an out of office message does not mean she is not receiving or seeing your application.  If you one is so dumb to think that way, then they dont deserve a chance.  Those who think that this programme should be handled by all departments, its obvisouly they are pleased with the way CS are hired these days. I am sure that this person is coordinating the programme and will liaise with all the other departments; or do we prefer everybody doing the same thing and getting nothing done.

Yes, go ahead and labled me a UPD supporter; because these days in Cayman one cannot speak their mind without been tainted polictically.

    • It pains me to say this says:

because it will come across as nasty, but, WHY is it that the vast majority of people who post comments like this, in support of whatever McKeeva does, show a lack of education in how they write?  Can it really be this simple?  If so, do you all see the need for the schools now?!  The more people who do not see this man as an equal, the fewer will vote for him.  Uneducated people will never vote for educated people because those with education have earned it and feel that everything else must be earnd instead of given, and that's why he is in power once again.

It’s July now, wouldn’t it be better to canvas for summer students earlier in the year like most people do in the world? It’s not like we didn’t see summer coming…

I am all for giving students some meaningful job experience. Sadly nothing about this announcement gives me any reason to believe that this is a real programme with some thought behind it rather than yet another Fire Ready Aim smoke and mirrors act designed to distract from last week's announcements. How is the Premier's office supposed to run this for the entire government – particularly when the contact person is away and won't be back until 25% of the "2 month" employment opportunity has expired?

  9. Anonymous says:

Please feel free to apply for the Premier's job I am pretty sure you will do a better job than he is doing no joke.

  10. truth says:

Yes by all means show them how to have a job that has no responsibilities but picking up a check and telling people to come back later.  On the job training Cayman style.  Only good if your working for CS but will not help anywhere else.  No worries though as typical CS fashion they will be told to come back later right?  Classic!

I just applied and got an out of office reply that she is away until 13 July 2011.  Is this a late April fool's or something.  I knew it was too good to be true.

  12. Subway Cookie says:

This was almost a good idea.  Then I read about how to apply.  Back to the salt lick!

Isn't this just like the UDP… here's another crumb off my table.

The Phone Number is actually for the ministry of tourism!

Wouldn't make sense to eliminate an overload of applicant by offerring the jobs to, I don't know, the millions of scholarship receipients?

Can I apply to be Premier while Mac is on vacation?

  16. a naw no mouse says:

So what's the criteria? Simply be a "local student"?

Should this not be by departments, rather than the "Premiers office"? This could most certainly "affect" some students and their famlies to feel beholden to the Premier eh?

Another example of NOT following Ethical Best Practice procedures!

  17. Anonymous says:

Hilarious – My kid sends an email and the contact person is on vacation. Nice one…

  18. Anonymous says:

Finally, an incentive I agree with, LOL!

  19. Anonymous says:

Another Civil Service cost-cutting exercise? How many non-UDP kids will get these jobs if they have to apply to the Premier's office? Surely each department should be doing this, the Premier's office should have better things to do with their time.

My friend was so thrilled and immediately went to the office and was told that the person responsible was not in office. Very disappointing.  I know that Mack means well but again the wrong folks handling it, the usual just like the popular boards.
