Hit and run driver hands himself in to police
(CNS): Police have now confirmed that a 27 year old man has handed himself into George Town police station after leaving the scene of a crash on Wednesday night in which two people were hurt. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without insurance. The man was driving a black Nissan Skyliner motorcar and was making a left turn into the Jet Nightclub on West Bay Road at around 10:40 on 24 August when he hit a motorcycle which was travelling along West Bay Road towards George Town carrying two people. The rider and pillion passenger were thrown from the motorcycle and both were injured in the crash – the rider sustained injuries to his arm and the pillion passenger to his shoulder. The men were taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town for treatment and while the pillion passenger was released earlier Thursday the rider remained in the hospital.
The driver left the scene before police arrived.

Yes the driver turned himself in only after he knew people saw his car driving off, I call that being a coward! It was reported on tv the driver was scared because he didn’t have the car licensed or insured this is no excuse! Thankfully the riders of the motorcycle didn’t receive serious injuries but it could have been much worse and to think the driver was worried about being ticketed when he left two people lay in the road not knowing their condition. Shame on you!
And since the driver admitted to not having insurance who is responsible for the motorcycle repairs and medical bills? I would hope since he is a government employee the cost can be taken from his wages! You stated that you were in financial difficulties before, well now you really are
If the Police would set up blockades several nights a week or even every night on the West Bay Road and Harquail Bypass simultaneously they would catch many who are breaking the laws by drunk driving, driving without a license/ registration/insurance, and possibly those with weapons, drugs, or stolen goods etc. This I believe would require much less man-power and equipment and be much less costly and much more productive than the expensive exercise and waste of time and resources at Rum Point over the past weekend. For those offences such as driving without a license/insurance the Police could impound the cars immediately and give a deadline to bring the required documentation otherwise the vehicles could be forfeited and could be sold and the funds given to the Cayman Cadet Corps for example. Whlst I applaud this man for eventually turning himself in to the Police, two young men could be dead from his carelessness and total disregard for the law as if the laws are for everyone but him. Taking away the vehicles from illegal drivers would be a deterrent for others who may think about doing the same thing but not at the risk of losing their wheels.
In my district there is a young man who has been caught many times and he does not have a drivers license and he is driving everyday. Where are the police.
