Thieves try to steal ATM

| 02/09/2011

(CNS): During the early hours of the morning thieves attempted to steal an entire ATM unit from inside the public area of the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town, police reported Friday. The thieves were unsuccessful in their efforts to remove the Butterfield automated teller sometime between 12:30 and 1:00am 2 September. Police said that the two men who were believed to have been involved also stole a Black Dodge Ram motor vehicle # 138 237 which they suspect was used to try to make off with the ATM. This vehicle was stolen from Redgate Garage on Redgate Road, George Town sometime between 8pm Thursday evening and 1am Friday morning.

Police said that the vehicle is still missing and anyone with any information regarding the incident at the hospital, the theft of the truck or its present whereabouts, should contact DC Lizzy Berns at George Town police station on 949-4222. Information can also be passed via the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-8477 (TIPS).

Lizzette Yearwood, CEO of the Health Services Authority said in a release that the CCTV was in operation in that area and the incident was recorded.

“We would like to thank the RCIPS, the staff of Butterfield, and our own Hospital staff for their prompt and professional response to this unfortunate incident so that no hospital operations were effected," she said. “It is regrettable that the actions of these individuals will cause some inconvenience to those that use the services of the ATM, and we hope to have it fully functional again as soon as possible.”

What difference does having CCTV make? Not one court case has had a conviction using CCTV yet look at all the evidence using CCTV footage that has been brought in to the courts so far. This last murder case even had eye witness's but because their stories didn't match up the judge threw out every other piece of evidence!

The criminals are smart and cover their faces, if the courts don't get smart too and start getting some convictions based on CCTV evidence then I'm afraid it will be very hard to justify the expenditure of how much $?? millions on CCTV cameras all over the place.

  4. Anonymous says:

Where's the CCTV footage and where were the guards?

It's a freaking hospital! It's not bad enough that these criminals put these people in the hospital now they commit crimes at the hospital too..

Time to get idle hands back to work Cayman..Stop protesting everyhting and get people back to work so they don't have to coninue to steal and harm people. Not saying that they should be stealing even if they don't have a job but obviously people are stooping to things they wouldn't have donevotherwise.

    Good morning.

If there was a trade school for these people they would not have time enough to sit and think what robbery will I commit next.  We need to stop blaming the Government for eveything that

happens in Cayman and parents take control of your children, look at their friends, what they

do with their time, and do not encourage these want to be thieves in to whatever they do.  If they come home with things they did not work for or you dont know about call the police.

It is your child, government cannot control them for you.  Dont spare the rod and spoil the child.

What worries me more is the fact that there needs to be an atm in the hospital.

Shouldn't healthcare be free, or is it only for the ones that can afford it ?

CCTV only works if somebody is watching constantly. Recordings after the fact are useless.

The purpose of placing the cameras is to give the people a feeling of safety, but in real it is just giving public funds to a "friend" of a "friend".

I'ma little concerned about what this says about the security of the hospital.  Some criminal could be in the hospital stabbed/ shot and the one out to get him could just walk right in?  Shouldn't the doors be locked after certain hours with a ringer on the outside?  What about security?

As for th elunatics trying to steal the ATM, they are just plain dumb.  Unfortunately, most likely this means that they will stike again as they didn't get what they wanted.

    • Anonymous says:

The doors at the hospital are locked after hours, and people can only be admitted by the Security staff. This however would not affect the probability of this crime taking place, as the ATM is located outside in the open main lobby next to the pharmacy.

The hospital does employ quite a number of Security guards, unfortunately they cannot be everywhere at once on such a large compound.

It's really sad that this is the type of crime that people are resorting to. You either have to be really stupid or really desperate to attempt to steal an entire ATM (like someone wouldn't see it on the back of the truck or when they were offloading it).

And despite all the talk about CCTVs, the reality is that these are not suitable deterrents as todays criminals do not fear them, that's why they use disguises. CCTVs are only semi-helpful after the fact when police and business owners review the footage in hopes of nailing a clue to the criminals' identity.

And let's be fair about an ATM being placed at the hospital; it's a matter of convenience for the 800+ hospital staff and the manyvisitors in and out of there every day. You can't possibly believe that just because health care SHOULD be free that an ATM isn't a good thing to have on the hospital premises.

The UDP has failed our citizens on Public Safety. They aren’t intelligent enough to take crime seriously so why should we take the UDP seriously? The only way we can fight back is to close the chapter on their leadership and the sooner the better.

    • Mr. Roboto says:

LOL you're a dunce!! Blaming the current administration for the publics safety. LOL would you like to blame them for anything else while you're at it? Hurricane Irene? Flooding in Pakistan? Solar flares on the Sun? I'm not a great UDP follower myself but really, do you have to put blame on them? You seem to want to just blame them for what ever you can. Maybe they should hire police officers and have them stand on the side of every road seperated 200' feet apart. LOL "the only way we can fight back is to close the chapter on their leadership" LOL yeh that will help public safety. "Oh look I'm a robber but I'm not going to harm anyone because the UDP are not in power anymore." LOL you ignorant dunce!!!

Even if the CCTV camaras was install, do you seriously think that will make them stop. Look at British Virgin Islands. They have CCTV camaras, and the crooks don't mind wearing mask and being on camara. CCTV camaras will do little to de-stress people who are without jobs.

  14. Wet Paper Caymanian says:

Now if they get arrested not only should they be charged for attempting to steal an ATM machine but also for being stupid and possiibly being kept in the mental ward of the hospital without cigarettes . I have to agree with another poster, that when many are right back on the street after being acquitted by the judicial system. So of course it will encourage wannabe thieves and most probably those 2 (idiots) would have probably kept the ATM machine as a trophy. Wow ! Definatly a copy cat crime from TV.

    • Fish Pot says:

12:15  Wet Paper Caymanian.  I believe that would mean you just got status.  Ok I want to ask you one question.   Do you like living here in Cayman,. and do you have many friends.?  If you do, then please woul you like to stop saying paper Caymanian now.  You are Caymanian, if you answered yes to my questions.  If you answered no,. then you are not happy here.  Did what I say make sense.?

      • Wet Paper Caymanian says:

Fish Pot 12:15 No not really.  Probably for the same reason that you sign Fish Pot, if your Caymanian ? If no for the same reason that you and the majority do these days . Now let me answer your questions, that means more then one : No,yes, yes. But I know one  thing, we both like fish and you will have to use different bait for me. However one day, I will probably say why …..! In the meantime I enjoy my pseudo, thank you very much for asking however. See you out there one day and Tight lines, oops I forgot, time to go check your Fish Pot.

Get with it reader it is a 'Way of life' in the Cayman Islands.

    • Anonymous says:

the way of life in the cayman islands, everybody needs to stand up and be firm about crime if the police are not doing the job then the citizens should start watching their communities.

do as the people of south africa have been doing forming watch associations whom walk around at night and take back the community and this comes from a person that cares about cayman but i guess i did not fit the bill when i applied to the rcips.

good luck, the courts also need to be reviewed as well, because their are a few dedicated police officers whose hands are tied when doing their job.

      • Anonymous2 says:

Some of these dedicated officers are fed up, because they arrest someone and bring them before the court, and then the magistrate releases these crooks back into society and nothing comes out of the arrest. They may reason, "why waste your time catching someone, all to find, they are set free to commit another crime."  Such things and double standards ruins an officer's morale.

  17. Anonymous says:

that is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard. wow. these guys are sitting back somewhere laughing at the fact they got away with stealing this car and got away with the attempt to steal an ATM. police seem to never catch anyone and thats the reason for this spike of crime lately. Government has so much money to buy Dodge Chargers for the police to parade around in but they can't even spend money on forensics so we can have proper evidence to lead us to where these dumb people are hiding. all i can say is i have never heard someone talk good about the government/police work. sounds like something needs to happen. when i think of Cayman society i think of a very sad means of barely keeping a society together. I am a local and have been my whole life with a proud family name to back it. i feel like i could run things better!

The almost silly tolerance for the crime in Cayman now from the residents is unimaginable. This situation is ridiculous. If the present day crime situation was happening with true Caymanian politicians for the people and country, Miss Annie, Captain Benson and Charles, Mr. Craddock, Jim Bodden, Mr. Warren, Mr. Norman, Linford, Truman, John there would be action. Bush, Oconnor and the UDP are looking after personal interests instead of the peoples and the country. Bush, stop pointing fingers at the Governor and the UK. Start taking care of Cayman. The opposition should demand action now. This is beyond ridiculous.

When criminals know you can get away with murder…grabbing a 700 lb ATM on camera in a public place isn't such hard thing to bring yourself to do!  If they do get caught the will be back on the street next weekend to shoot someone…the circle of life on Cayman!

    • Anonymous says:

It is now evident that we have an organized criminal process going on who understands the RCIP weaknesses. The pattern of robberies, hitting random locations at varying times of the night or day demonstrates an awareness of police movements and deployment patterns. It is also likely that it is the same individuals or at least 4 of them who canvass locations before the hit is made.

All of what I said before points to the need for heavy foot patrols supplemented by motor cycle patrols and stationing of officers at critical junctions in town and island wide so that their presence can act as a deterrent as well as provide rapid response when necessary. It may be argued that there is insufficient police ,however, this remains to be proven for well we don’t see too many of them most of the time.

Also, undercover personnel from neighboring jurisdictions who are fully trained should be brought in to infiltrate the underground community that exists,to provider key intelligence on known offenders as well as sniff out other rats in the sewer that may exist where it is least suspected.

Last but not least, people of the cayman islands must realize that the crime affects us all in one way or other, but ultimately will destroy all that we have if we sit back see no evil, hear no evil and speak not .

Tired and ready to take action.

  31. Getting The Glock Out says:

These folks surely watching far too much TV….

Anyway, we have paid for the roadside Cameras..are they operating??? Pray tell me yes…

    • Anony Mous says:

Nearly every business place and some private homes in Cayman have some form of camera but this can not stop the criminal who wears a mask which they always do. The police knows this already so the cameras that we have paid over $3,000,000.00 to install will only be used for traffic offences as soon as the laws are amended for that purpose. The police believe that to be seen out on the streets is to check the expiration date of motor vehicle, not the speeders, dark tinted windows to hide behind in your mask or blue lights on your car which had its springs cut to give a bouncing ride which in turn give a blue strobe light effect. Next point is, what is the useful purpose of having a camera and identifying a crime taking place and when the buzzo goes to court he is set free. Right now if you see the person in front of you and you hold onto the buzzo, he will be set free because you did not properly identifyed him in the right condition. If you should ask a real criminal which set of crimes are the easiest to sbe set free in any court and the will tell you it is the more serious ones starting with murder and the ones that you will most likely to be convicted of are the petty ones like traffic offenders and going up the scale to ganjaand other small time offences.
