Miss Angola takes 60th Miss Universe title

| 13/09/2011

(CNS): A twenty five year old business student from Benguela Miss Angola, was crowned Miss Universe after impressing the judges with brains as well as beauty. Unfortunately, despite her best efforts in the preliminary rounds Miss Cayman Islands didn’t make the top 16 in the glitzy contest Monday night. Leila Lopes is the 60th woman to be crowned in the international pageant but the first from her own country and only the fourth African woman. Lopes pipped Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko, first runner up to the post after telling the judges she considered herself endowed with inner beauty. “I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family, and I plan to follow those through the rest of my life," she said.

Priscila Machado Miss Brazil managed second runner-up in front of the home crowd followed by Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup who had topped the fan board during the show and Miss China Luo Zi Lin came in fifth.

Sadly, although she looked fantastic during the semi finals on Friday Cristin Alexander was unable to sway the judges with her evening wear, bikini or stunning carnival style national costume.

Miss Angola is such a beautiful lady loved her response to the question section. Not surprised cayman didn’t place.

Your comment about Miss Angola was well deserved but………………. you just had to go and spoil the moment by being negative about Miss Cayman. One of the occasions when if you have nothing nice to say keep your mouth shut.

    what's cayman's record at miss worlds/universe????

    • Anonymous says:

What's the rest of the worlds record at these competitions. There were 89 countries represented and 16 finalists – so Cayman was not in the top 16 who cares there were also another 73 other countries including the Cayman Islands who did not make it – so what. She went, she was beautiful and we who care are very proud of her. Well done.

      what's yours?

We have recorded an unexplicably high and unnecessary level of pointless public expenditure.

What exactly do you mean by your question?

The first time I ever heard of the Cayman Islands was watching Miss World on tv. This competition is great exposure for the islands as well. However, I think it is totally unfair to the smaller countries to have the girls advance partially based onsupporters votes! Even a relatively small country has no chance, never mind a tiny nation like ours. I believe one of the Caymanina girls placed quite high some years ago and that the personality award voted for by the girls themselves went to Miss Cayman. Can anyone verify this?

Yes it did Ms. Devonne Watler – Miss Personality – those were the days.

Yes and top ten finalist I do believe was Theresa Lewis.
