Cristin back on earth after ‘Universe’ experience

| 19/09/2011

(CNS): After a gruelling journey from Sao Paolo, Brazil where she faced various delays, Miss Cayman Islands returned home from the world’s most glamorous beauty pageant last week looking like a winner. Welcomed back from the Miss Universe contest, by the premier, as well as fans, friends and family Cristin Alexander described her experience at Brazil as “incredible.” Miss Cayman said she was delighted with the choice of all five top contestants in last Monday’s final pageant, especially Miss Angola, the winner. She also said she was very happy with her preparation for the event and that she had given it her best shot. (Photo Dennie Warren Jr)

Greeting the country’s reigning beauty queen on Thursday McKeeva Bush said he was truly proud of Cristin and lauded her as an ardent cultural ambassador for Cayman.

“Indeed, in Cayman’s eyes, Cristin is a winner all the way and a tremendous role model for young women and girls in Cayman,” he said. “I wish her the very best during the rest of her year and beyond.”

Cristin’s reign will come to an end in a few days however, when she crowns the new Miss Cayman Islands on Saturday.  Ten young women from across all three Cayman Islands will be vying for the 2011 at the Lion’s centre this weekend.

I am sick of all the talk about crime, all the talk of politics, all the talk of the economy.. It's like these people don't know we got beauty pageants going on!

I cannot belive someone will actually have the time to think that this is a waste of time. Cristin did a great job in representing our island and we should all be proud of her regardless if she won or not. It is not all about winnin but putting the effort in trying. We are all sad about all the crime that is happening now and this has nothing to do with this young and beuatiful young lady going out representing us. So try to think a little before saying anything negative about others. Thank you.

So some think this a waste of money.  I guess they don't know about the number of young women who have reigned as Miss Cayman and the success they have had through the scholarship opportunities as well as life changing growth from the exposure and grooming.  Let's name a few shall we; Donna Myrie-Stephens, Harriett Lott-Hurlstone, Gemma McLaughlin, Wendy Daykin -Moore, Dr. Tasha Ebanks-Garcia, Theresa Lewis-Pitcairn, Jacquline Bush-Terry, Debbie Cridland-Bergstrom, Effie Ebanks-Mitchell, shall I go on?  The list of successful Caymanian women who have worn the crown of Miss Cayman is longer than any of us probably realize.  Maybe we should be supporting these young women and encouraging more of our young girls to follow their footsteps instead of becoming some guys baby mama by the age of 22.

I can't believe this is what the Premier makes time for when he is actually here in Cayman.  Thsi and representing a homie in court.  Well at least he didn't cost us $500k negotiating a finance deal or who knows how much with the port.

How can anyone sit there and say this was a waste of time ?

Everytime someone on this island tries to do something great , you always have to have some shallow (like stingray city )minded person who has something negative to say . Then we sit around with these under- a -grapetree conversations on whats wrong with the youths around here. Instead of beating down positivity in the youths , try and offer some good words of advice to people like her and anyone who has a dream to be on a world stage one day. She did the island proud and its not a waste of time or money if something positive was trying to be accomplished out there. Continue to do great thing in the future Cristin and every other Miss Cayman to follow in her footsteps.
