If you want to save lives and lower your insurance premiums, pass a law that mandates governors on all cars in Cayman that limits the top speed to 40 miles per hour.

At 40 miles per hour you can get anywhere on these tiny islands in a reasonable amount of time.

The technology is cheap and easy to install.

Exceptions, of course, would apply to emergency vehicles plus politicians and their cronies.

No speeding was involved in this accident. Just a pileup caused by one driver not paying attention to a car slowing down in front of he/she. Stop criticizing the police about not paying attention to speeders etc. when this accident has nothing to do with speeding. The police actually have been doing a tremendous job lately.

Most multiple car accidents happen because of the idiots who follw behind a few feet and not 3 car lenghts min. May I suggest that anyone caught doing this has to retake their and 3 strikes and you're out. I am very tired of stupid drivers tailgaiting me and worst it's the one car in the front who get more injuries.

Now do we understand why alternate routes are required? DO NOT CLOSE WB ROAD.

As a self-confessed former "boy racer" (Fortunately, the only injured victim of my young and careless exuberance was myself!), I know for certain that many of our accidents could be prevented with strategically placed speed cameras at certain points on our roads.

These cameras are more effective than routine police patrols as they guarantee the offender a speeding ticket as they capture images of the license plate, vehicle make and model, time of capture and sometimes even that of the actual driver.

(The objective is not necessarily to issue speeding tickets, but to prevent and squash the very temptation of speeding / reckless driving on these crucial stretches of road.)

I wonder is someone in the know could shed some light on the hold up in this regard.

I understand that earlier there were issues of costs and connectivity, however, with the recent technological advances in the country (e.g. island wide 4G) perhaps the option ought to be reexamined?

If I remember correctly laws were also a problem, as it is not currently legal to use speed cameras to issue tickets. I agree though, a very good investment as a preventative measure, and the extra revenue for those who choose to speed anyway and get caught (and the camera should always catch them) wouldn't hurt either. While we're at it, how about cameras for the people who insist on running red lights? Particularly those who turn right across traffic at Smith Road/Crewe Road junction by the cricket pitch and at the Jacques Scott junction right after the light turns red, so dangerous!

Laws of this nature will be "soon come" laws because some of the people who love to drive fast while using their cell phones are our beloved politicians.

Don't hold your breath while waiting for sensible road laws and enforcement.

Why do we never see these lazy ass donut eating police on the bypass or highways rather than south sound where people get tickets for doing 40mph instead of 30mph. Yet, on the bypass or highways, they doing 60/70/80mph with never any police in site. I could probably put my money on it that most tickets are given on south sound. Guess how embarrassing it was, the police officer struggled to get out of the drivers seat as he was too big, and the lady officer, let me not start with her. They lucky I didn't run from the scene, as they'd be still trying to get out of the car now. I got a ticket for doing 37mph in a 30mph zone. Pathetic!!!! I'm not saying I'm wrong or shouldn't have gotten the ticket before anyone makes a comment.

I could not agree more. The same happened to me. While I agree that Speed Restrictions are essential, some seem to be more of a revenue raising measure that a safety measure.

Inconsiderate hooligans use this section of highway like a racetrack!

Put up full time camera's with built-in speed monitoring equipment like the rest of the world, if you want to slow them down.

Car pile ups are an area where Cayman excells over any other country. Where are the police with their handy dandy radar guns? The only time they are seen is when harrassing law abiding citizens driving on miss-marked roads- and usually up sneaky driveways.

    My money is on:

    1) Some selfish person was drunk driving.

    2) Some idiot kid was driving a crappy old Honda like it was an indy car.

    3) Some selfish idiot lid was driving a crappy old Honda like it was an indy car while they were drunk.

Recent sentences for drunk driving and dangerous driving have been far too lenient.  When it comes to road fatalities Cayman is even higher in the world table than it is in the murder rates.
