Mac on Far Eastern visit

| 26/10/2011

(CNS):The premier, along with a group of at least half a dozen government representatives, left the Cayman Islands at the weekend destined for the Far East. According to various sources and unconfirmed reports, McKeeva Bush is leading a government delegation to Hong Kong and China on an official visit. Despite repeated requests to the premier’s press office, no official details of the trip have been released. It is not known exactly how long the visit is for or the ports of call, though sources have pointed to Bejing and Shanghai, as well as Hong Kong, nor has the purpose of the visit been revealed to the public or the names of the full delegation.

CNS has been able to confirm that UDP backbencher Ellio Solomon is travelling with the premier, as is Dax Basdeo, the chief officer in the Ministry of Finance, and Jonathan Piercy, who now heads up the Department of Commerce and Investment. A representative of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and the registrar general are also accompanying the premier, along with his political assistant, Richard Parchment.

Other delegates are also believed to be on the trip. CNS has been unable to confirm who they are but it is understood that no other MLAs or minsters have travelled to the Far East.

Based on the delegates that have been identified, the trip appears to be in connection with seeking inward investment for the Cayman Island. It is not clear if the premier will be meeting with representatives from China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the Bejing based firm currently in talks with the premier over the development of cruise berthing facilities in George Town.

With no official itinerary released and no comment on the premier’s departure, it is assumed, though not confirmed, that the deputy premier, Juliana O’Connor Connolly, is currently acting as premier.

The independent MLA for North Side, Ezzard Miller, told CNS that he and other members of the country’s legislature, like the wider public, had been kept in the dark regarding the trip.

“It is usual in a democracy when someone is elected to high office by the people and when travelling on behalf of the people that they find the capacity to tell the peoplewhere they are going, who they are going to meet and what they hope to achieve,” Miller said. “Otherwise it would be assumed it is just another world tour or a joy ride.”

The premier has often been criticised for the amount of travelling he undertakes but has lashed out at his critics on many occasions, defending his trips by suggesting that he needs to travel to secure overseas investment to turn the economy around.

    Is there a conspiracy?

Ok, a little googling and 2011 China Offshore Summit will give you all the details of this swank event in Shanghai. Interestingly, there are no Cayman speakers although several other jurisdictions are represented. Google also turned up details on ieyeNews such as the names of the 7 delegates.

I hope the Chinese officials are not parading them around and on tv, and telling the Chinese people in the mandarin language that these guys are from the circus.

Or worse if they are telling the audience that these are a bunch of clowns from the Cayman Islands, who have come to sample Chinese food.

  9. Tamrun Switch Flip Mood says:

Lets see how many more "stupid" ideas can pass through their feeble minds before they can get a clue how most of the local population in the Cayman Islands truly feel about their "representatives".  Do they really have their heads that far buried in the powdery white sands??  While a select few benefit, the rest suffer, but I'm sorry to say this time the voters won't find it too hard to forget all the money-give-aways,perks, trips, questionable relationships and business deals that should never be the norm in political dealings.  Just imagine if we WERE independent, this "Premier" would have us all as his personal slaves….unable to have personal opinions and black-list anyone he chooses. Scary thought!

Ehhhh…. in case you didn't know, the only way to remove Mac immediately is by a vote of no confidence…. already tried by the PPM……..would have loved it to go through but the UDP need to grow a pair and vote against him for this to succeed. If you have any other solution, speak up, there is very little point in blaming other people for not "taking action" if you are doing the same.

      • Anonymous says:

Can you all understand that as long as the UDP is in power you will not have a Majority Vote to bring this man down. Just hope and pray that some of them will have the Balls and guts to recognise what is happening to our country. Yet  the UDP Leader says the country is broke, and he and his cronies are on World Tours. Just imagine!!!  the cost of tickets, hotel etc. that we are paying for. CNS can you request FOI to provide an accounting of  this tour????  Will we be getting a Branch of the Bank of Hong Kong in Cayman very soon?

Well Big Mac is not acting like HE is broke, just breaking our dear country!  The NCVO has had their budget slashed (sorry foster homes and school lunches for needy families) **please dontate this weekend for the telethon.  The money for literacy programs has to come from private donations (huh?) There are letters asking all the service groups for DONATIONS to fund ALL the after school programs, YET….this ^%^#@$^#!!  jaunts off once again with a dozen cronies to spend our money.  (And has the audacity to give $4million to pet churches!?!)

I am soooo tired of all levels of white collar government foolishness and taking from the people's pockets.

I never thought I'd say this, but Your Majesty, please take over and simply assign a few auditors here! If ever there was proof that we cannot govern ourselves it is watching this egotistical group of self serving maniacs run around the globe squandering our "duty dollars" while our own social programs look to the private sector and our children have poor education with no hope of the future.

  13. Old Sea Captain says:

The Premier and his cohorts may not have brought any real investors to the table or gotten any proposed projects off the ground but we are sure paying dearly while they have a jolly good time 'trying'.

  14. Ubelievedat says:

Our Premier should be IMPEECHED for breaking our Consititutional rights, for failing to follow the Consitiution, for failing to exercise a democratic government; abuse of power; AND to negotiating in SECRET with a Communist country (which in my mind, is a direct threat to ALL of our FREEDOMS and LIBERTIES).

I would go as far as suggesting the the UK authorities quickly look into this "secret meeting" to ensure that the Premier and his "pack" have not caused any negotiations that would jepordise any security or reputational measures for them and their overseas territory, ie Cayman Islands.

The UK should closely monitor this "backdoor entrance" strategy.

The best thing to do in this situation is to play his game and ignore him totally. We need to send our emails directly to the F.C.O.( as the Governor must be running out of rope and looks like he don't know what to do with him) and tell them that what he is doing is using the Country"s Money (OUR money) and we have reason to believe that he is not acting in our Country Best Interest (Communist Countries) to the point that he refuses to even issue any type of statement that he is even going (whith a whole entourage) I ask our learned friends to find something in the law that he is doing wrong. He will cause bloodshed if this keeps up. Isn't that a good reason enough. MUST BE SOMETHING WE CAN DO because he aint that smart . I refuse to believe that we can't bring that man down peacefully. His arrogance alone wants to make one vomit.Very disapointed in his press secretary as he must realise by now that he is dealing with real pirates and not the same ones from the Pirates Week Office. Why have Pirates Week when our Country is run by Pirates year long. New title for next movie: ' Pirates of the Cayman Islands". instead of capturing the Governor, let's capture the MacBaloney.

This weekend is the National Council of Volunteers telethon.  They have had their Govt budget SLASHED….Yes, this means the foster homes suffer while McKeeva dines and travels.

Gives $4million to churches, but school children go HUNGRY for lunches?

Come ON people….We need the UK to step in and put a stop to this madness.

      • Anonymous says:

Absolutely right!  Why are the children always coming last for anything?  Isn't this where the problem has grown over the years to the situation now?  Also include the huge amount of money given for the painted house.  (No disrespect to Ms Lassie, RIP).  Where did this money come from?  Surely this could be done with less money.  The children, the NCVO and the charities desperately need this assistance.  It is time to get priorities right in these Islands.  Stop wasting money on the travelling with the huge entourage and start putting the foundation back – starting with the children!!!

Secret dealings with the communist Chinese Government and we the people are sitting by and letting it happen. This is an extremely dangerous precedent. Our politicos are only planning as far ahead as XXXX. Unfortunately for us, we are going to be left with the communist Chinese having considerable leverage over our Country through control of our Ports for the next 50 years. Whatever happened to the kind of Caymanians that blocked the runway at Owen Roberts to keep the communist Cuban government representatives from landing here? History will hold all of us accountable for the deeds of our elected Government.

so now we're all upset because he hasn't told us where he's going? really? come on…surely we've got bigger issues right now….its not like he's hiding the fact (he didnt fly out at night in an unmarked stealth rocket)…..so its not officially announced….probably because he's forgotten, it could be that simple that the govt are so under fire right now from us all that they've forgotten to issue a public notice about the trip……lets all hold off for a while and see what transpires…….

i'm betting that on his return he'll announce and show a signed agreement to begin cruise construction and probably re-finance or re-energise some other stalled deals here…..and then what? instead of saying well done, we'll complain we were not invited or consulted, as if we should be

he'll come back with a signed cruise development…..and that will kickstart our economy….not everyone will like it, but at least its something…..right now we've half of us marching this weekend against the only other tangible/likely investment happening here (Dart road deal)…..guys, i dont care who brings us what….but we need something to breathe life into these islands fast…….

lets hold off for now…..if he doesnt come back with signed agreements, then lets demand an investigation into why he took a holiday to see the great wall with Elio Lee Hung Tiny and the rest of them …..

Ok so let me get this straight….Mckeeva (Dora the explorer) and his Sidekick Ellio (boots the monkey) have a “business” trip attending in China…

Now someone please answer me this…this is a man who has been on the headlines of CNS, Cayman compass etc, under scrutiny for the things he has and is doing yet he left the island with half a dozen government representatives and has said nothing to the public? This is “supposedly” a business trip for the betterment of the Islands yet the people of the islands know nothing about what he is going there to do and how we as people and an island will benefit! Now come on, doesn’t this seem like a crock of s***?! If he hasn’t even told his fellow co-workers as Mr. Miller makes very clear, how should we as a community feel about this? I personally feel like it is a slap in the face! He has no room for screwing up or for any slip ups as he is under a microscope right now; he should be doing everything and anything under his power to ensure US “THE PEOPLE” know exactly what’s what! We shouldn’t have to wait until he is back to find out the purpose and what we would benefit from whatever “business” he was over there trying to get! As for Ellio, he was on Cayman Cross Talk last Friday and wasn’t even able to answer the simple question as to what was the purpose of the trip. Come on, how can people have faith in you guys when you can give us the truth about anything? You are suppose to be making this island better for us Caymanians instead it seems like your working against us!

I’m sure the people who have voted him in are regretting every vote that got him in! it seems to me people forget the things this man has done…but he has created so much distractions from him that its hard to keep up…lets not forget First home Bank, National Housing Department, after Ivan when he “helped” west bay to other peoples goods & the Rally for jobs. Do your research people; open your eyes and stop being naive. This man “says” he has Caymans best interest @ heart, what do I have to say to this “got to see it to believe it” when he can show me ONE JUST ONE  thing he has done to improve Cayman THEN I’ll give him a fighting chance!

Until then he can talk to the hand *rolls eyes*

Oh and PS: for the person who posted this:

    It was announced by Ellio

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/25/2011 – 21:54.

It was announced by Ellio Solomon on Friday on the rooster.  So much your conspiracy CNS.
And as if the premier had to register with CNS prior to their official business.  what a pathetic attempt at tarnishing again, the lamest of issues.
    Get a life.

I think you need to get a life! Please read, & process what you read before you comment on things….Ellio only mentioned he was not going to be in studio for the next couple of Fridays due to a business trip…if Austin hadn’t asked where to etc Ellio wouldn’t have said one word…and incase u didn’t know let me EDUCATE you…not everyone has the tolerance to sit and listen to rooster or Ellio for that matter so check ya self before ya wreck yourself…Mckeeva as our elected premier he SHOULD be keeping the same people who elected him, aware of what’s happening and what the purpose of business trips are for, if their for the improvement and betterment of Cayman why so hush hush about it? Oh and one last thing: Mckeeva needs NO help tarnishing his name…he does an excellent job of that in his own! He doesn’t need to register with CNS prior to official business BUT he SHOULD be letting his people us Caymanians know what’s happening. Please read the article again and take ur head out the clouds, did you miss the part where not even some of his other members of the LA didn’t know about this trip…so if he hasn’t told the public and hasn’t told the other people in the LA what he’s doing what does that mean? That not even the people that he should be consulting with don’t have the RIGHT to know what’s happening? Psccch! Get a reality check my friend, you couldn’t be more wayyy off!

But in all seriousness I am betting this is the CHEC thing and possibly talking about something else to replace the other crap we all screamed at such as the dredging and what ever else he had CHEC or their friends in to do.

I am just wondering how much this is going to cost us and if CHEC has any private planes to send the Mac team back on. Because of course I hear they are supposedly flying our way anyhow.

Seriously? This has to be a spoof . You cannot actually go public with this dangerously low level of grammatical competence and expect to exist in the world today. Oh wait, you're in cayman, I mean exist in the world in the 18th Century. Stop your whining and use your time online to improve your English skills and try and actually contribute something to the community in which you live. I can only assume from your staggering lack of understanding of the prevailing social conditions within the Cayman Islands that you are fresh out of the grip of another dictator (finally buried him…) and are looking for a new fool to worship. God cannot help the cayman islands, get off your seat and do it yourself.

Actually, his grammatics were better than a great number of McKeeva's supporters that have posted on CNS. Unfortunately, his content was probably about as low life as i've ever seen. Thank you for your attempt at promoting intelligence in our country.

It is no coincidence that the majority of the people that complain about the Premier's critics seem to be the least intelligent  bloggers!!!!  They have limited mental capacity so they vote for loud-mouth dictators!!!!  What in the hell is "Goverment"?

To be fair we didn't know he'd turn out like this… hindsight is 20/20. Supporters (Endangered species, soon to be extinct) of the UDP were mainly hoping for a term of inaction. Not extravagant spending, flaunting of misuse of power and rampant corruption all to the detriment of anyone not involed in the 'Mac Attack' mob.

American and European companies do not pay kickbacks.

Chinese companies have no problems with kickbacks; they call them "gifts".

It appears (note that I said "appears") that the cruise ship dock is being delayedwhile the premier is negotiating the best kickback deal instead of the best financial deal for Cayman. This may not be fact, this may be marl road drivel, this may be pure speculation but it is my strong unverified perception.

Building a cruise ship dock is not difficult. It is not rocket science. There are many competent and ethical contractors that would love to build it and who could have built it years ago. The cruise ship companies could have been brought in as partners if Cayman was creative at negotiating a win-win-win deal for Cayman, the contractor and the cruise ship companies.

I sincerely hope that the Autitor General combs through the detailed paper trail associated with these trips and the cruise ship dock contract (if and when it materializes). If it is found that XXXX is squeaky clean, honest and ethical, I will apologize and congratulate him on a job well done. Otherwise, his next trip should be to Northward.

  57. Polly Tricks says:

Apparently the Premier sometimes manages to find private jets to take him home as a stroke of luck.  Even if the jets are supplied by businesses doing business with the Government this does not create a conflict of interest because a) it was lucky and b) what is wrong with a conflict of interest if it saves money?

I now feel sorry for Mac and JuJu because the PAC evidence leads me to believe that the Premier does not book his travel plans in advance, but rather sometimes has to hang around airports until a private jet appears from a third party.  This high class hitch-hiking policy might explain why Mac is out of the country so long.

He has to full fill his promises, so on each trip he takes a selected few to see the world.  He has to help out his supporters and make them happy by giving them a trip half way around the world.  If the spin doctor was attracting investors for every trip he made, China would look like a drop in the bucket to Cayman.  Can our people understand what the Premier is doing to this country and its people?  If there is a dictator,we don't have far to look for him, he is here and alive in the Cayman Islands.   McDaffe.
