Robber gets knocked on the head and runs off

| 17/11/2011

Crime-Scene.jpg(CNS): Update Thursday 4pm — A would-be robber ran off empty handed after being hit on the head with a cup by one of his intended victims. An RCIPS spokesperson said that at around 11.00 pm last night a married couple returned to their home in Palm Dale Avenue, George Town. As they were entering their porch area, an unknown man wearing a Halloween mask and holding what appeared to be a handgun emerged from the yard and demanded money. As the offender went to search a bag, the male victim struck him on the head with a cup. This disorientated the gunman, who then fled on foot.

No descriptive details were given about the suspect other than the fact that he was wearing a long sleeve shirt, black denim pants and black gloves. No property was stolen and the victims were uninjured, police said.

Anyone who was in the area at the relevant time and has information which could assist the police is asked to contact George Town police station 949-4222.

Some people are really thick and you won't make them any smarter by answering them.

This comment is not directed at the twit who made the comment about not knowing whether it was a firearm so it was not an armed robbery

A robbery with ANYTHING used to intimidate and threaten a victim is considered an armed robbery, even if  that item were later found not to be an actual weapon…it is the intentionand use of the item that makes it an armed robbery.

Its a pity that it wasn't more than a cup that this prep was hit with…a visit to the hospital with a serious wound would quickly reveal his indentity…a baseball bat or machete would have done a much better job.

Did the police arrest the homeowner for striking that poor gunman in the head with his cup? How dare he defend himself and his wife!

I hope this 'nit wit' robber realizes that robbery is not exactly his 'cup' of tea..

Not today BoBo.  Da wa ya get.

Did the homeowner have a license for that cup? There is no need for cups on a small island like grand cayman! What if that cup fell in to the hands of criminals? Long gone are the good old days of cayman when we didn’t have to worry about cup violence…sigh.

I support private cup ownership and for a person's right to use a cup in self defence!  Less people are killed worldwide but cups than by untensils.  When cups are outlawed only the criminals will have cups (think about it).

Could well have been the sketchy looking guy on a bicycle I saw scouting out a nearby neighbourhood a little earlier on in the evening. He fit the standard description, if that helps.

If it is not sure whether firearms were used, you should not call it an "armed" robbery.

Generally speaking, if there is even a suggestion – via verbal comunication or gestures – that the robber has a weapon (not necessarily a firearm) then it would be considered an armed robbery and if caught the perp would be charged accordingly. A display of a firearm is not the only basis for calling such an event an armed robbery.

Hey, if you want to be the one writing the head lines just to hear yourself, please remember if an intruder enters someone's space with intent to deprive that person in any manner with a stone in hand, that is in my view a person armed with intent to rob, hence 'armed robbery'. If your intention is to deny that we have arm robberies because a forensic test was not done on the object then say so.

Change the description to, "…last seen wearing a long sleeve shirt, black denim pants, black gloves, and a guava on his head".
