Dr Frank McField shot

| 01/12/2011

Frank mcfield.jpg(CNS): Update Thursday 2:50pm — The former UDP minister and George Town MLA, Dr Frank McField, who was shot in the leg this morning, has not yet revealed how he sustained his injuries to investigating officers. An RCIPS spokesperson stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear. Police are, however, looking for the person driving a black car that dropped McField at the hospital at around 6am on Thursday, 1 December. Police believe that the car may have been a Toyota Supra and are appealing for the driver or anyone who saw that car in the area to come forward. It is still not known where the shooting occurred but sources tell CNS that McField's car was found in the Scranton area of George Town.

Detectives have confirmed that they have been interviewing the victim since his admission to hospital but “at this stage the circumstances around what happened, and where, are not clear,” the spokesperson added.

Officers are appealing for anyone who has information which could assist them in establishing what took place to contact them. They are asking anyone who may have heard a gun being discharged or who may have seen any suspicious activity to contact George Town police station on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line on 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).

McField was the former Cabinet minister for Community Development, Youth, Sports and Gender Affairs in the UDP administration from the 2001 coup until the election in 2005. He lost his George town seat in that election, and efforts to regain the seat in 2009 were unsuccessful.

McField remains an outspoken advocate for the socially excluded and was until just a few weeks ago presenting a UDP-backed radio talk show about community issues. The show, which was aired on Radio Cayman but paid for by the premier, was abruptly taken off air recently without explanation.

As the former RCIP officer that had the "pleasure" of dealing with Dr Frank, and convicting him of all of the charges I had laid against him in a court of law,  I can say for certain that this was not a random event! I ask what a former Government Minister is doing in such areas late night, but I know!!  and since I see how Dr Frank tends to speak and deal with people once he has been out for the night, I must say I am not surprised at the outcome!

It has been posted many times before and in response to many different articles on this forum, but it is worth repeating.  Cayman (Caymanians and legal residents alike) STOP the denial.  This is so absurd.  Wisen up!  Didn’t you hear the adage, if it walks like a duck…

We do this with regards to everything:

    • We refuse to acknowledge the corruption in our political system,
    • We  refuse to accept the very likely scenario surrounding the CB plane crash just recently, and
    • now many of you appear happy to believe that this man who was shot in the leg was out and about at those hours of the morning handing out gospel tracks – because that is so consistent with his track record  **rolls eyes**.

This island will regret its continued denial one day.  Reminds me of the Island's history of denying the existence of a gang culture.  Under Truman's watch – there were no gangs, then under another administration they were "groups" and it wasn't until they were dropping dead every other night that we had to admit there were gangs.

The only thing that can come from denial (barring a miracle) is the continued deterioration of our society.  I would rather that we became consumed with a righteous anger at these situations, confronted them together as a people and demanded change, but this too would probably also require a miracle **rolls eyes**

I will end all of my postings from now on with this message for the Premier:

You know this vitriolic diatribe against Dr. McField is disgusting. You all, hiding behind a veil of anonymity while a Caymanian was shot. No matter the circumstances.

In Jamaica in the period of 1970 to 1975 when the news carried that there were shootings in Trench Town, no one cared also. Some said let them kill each other. By 1978 they were shooting people in Cherry Gardens, Jacks Hill and Mandeville. Then everyone said- "oh my, I know this lovely person who got shot last night, my cousin,….my brother,….. my friend"–it was too late then. Violence and the gun culture had spread throughout Jamaica and they have not gone back to civility ever since.

I see this happening here in Cayman, day by day. You should also. It will soon be your cousin or sister or brother that is shot in the leg and I am sure you will not hit the "thumbs up" button then.

Caymanians, this is just not correct. Find something productive to do. Do not contribute to your country sliding to become another Jamaica. More importantly, do not make jokes about Dr Frank getting shot no matter what you think of the man. It is not funny and it only contributes to Cayman's slide into chaos. It is you that may be next on the front page of the Compass in your PJs, if you get that lucky.

It is obvious that as you look down the comments for this thread that there are a lot of connections with Jamaicans. And I am not saying Jamaicans commited the crime. Whoever did it did it. However for a long time there has been this attitude against Jamaicans and linking them with crime and yet just a few days back we note that Honduras is now listed as the murder capital of the world. So dont take your eyes off that side as well.

We need to be vigilant in checks concerning all expats but also as you say we need to make sure that Caymanian kids themselves dont go down these roads of life.

There is more to it, than we know, or we will ever know.

It it is even possible he shot himself in the leg. Which is easy to determine, based on the angle  and location of the bullit. In addition to residues on his hands.

But i am sure we will never hear about it. They can't even find 1 of the 2 black supra's on this island.

Dr. McField is a smart man who has, over many years, consistently published articulate articles on the root causes of some of Cayman's underlying problems. He is a person who, like Roy Bodden, looks for real and long term solutions to many of Cayman's ills whose root causes are deeply cultural.

Dr. McField's thoughts and ideas are valuable to Cayman. They must be seriously considered even if you do not wholly agree with them.

The shooting? It is sad that Dr. McField must endure this physical and emotionly painful situation. I wish him a speedy recovery.

His non-cooperation with the police? This is not surprising given Dr. McField's views on the mistrust between the Cayman people and their ruling institutions. The mistrust is one of the root causes that Dr. McField speaks to in his writings.

I have no inside knowledge of Dr Frank's gunshot wound but the circumstances of being fropped off at the hospital by someone who then left without waiting leads me to suspect that there was some criminality involved.

Dr Frank's comment ," better to be shot in the leg than the head" or words to that effect and then having no memory of the events lead me to suspect that he was giving a shot to the leg as a warning, about what I have no idea but it is something serious.

Until and unless Dr Frank makes some statement that makes sense and identifies the driver and others involved such as the gun and its owner these questions will remain unanswered.

Dr Frank escaped this time hopefully he will do the right thing.

I am sorry to hear such bad news about Dr. Frank Mcfield. A gun shot wound can become fatal. Anything could happen like blood poisoning, blood clot, and perhaps he could have been shot somewhere that would have been life-threatening. I have read some of the comments here, and I have to say, if it was you who was shot in your leg, would you be laughing right now?  I hope Frank gets well and recover from his injury. People, let us remember what is "human dignity" even to those people you don't like.

I too am appalled by some of the posts on this particular story – however, one may be incorrect to assume that the majority of these comments are being posted by Caymanians.

Granted, we fuss and fight amongst ourselves at certain times like any other group of people, however there is a certain essence within many of these comments that strikes me as very unfamiliar.

There are certain 'things' that simply do not fit within my / our Caymanian culture. Some may disagree but, as usual, I am simply calling it the way I see it.

In any event I am happy that CNS has allowed them to be displayed – very telling indeed.

Oh dear Jesus, Whodatis, yes it is the brutal Chagos islanders-repressing  English that are doing all this negative posting about poor Frank. Yawn. You really are something else. Like it or not, Dr Frank has a "reputation" AMONG CAYMANIANS going back many many years, before you were an adult (if you are who I think you are). I happen to think he has on occasions spoken brilliantly about the problems in Cayman (he has NOT acted brilliantly but that is a different question) but everyone knows he has his "different and difficult" moments.

As to who you are, it doesn't really matter but your comments fit very well with the attitudes I hear on a daily basis from discontented and not very high performing Caymanians who think they should be "higher up' in their employment because….well……….they are Caymanian. XXXX

Please do explain, not the displayed part, the "very telling" part .

    • Whodatis says:

      Clarification:

My initial post was not regarding the forwarded assumptions, history or character of Dr. Frank McField – I could not care less about such things at this point – nor were my words meant to be in defense of him.

Instead I was addressing the callous reaction to and mockery of the shooting of a named and known person (as opposed to the usual anonymous victim) that had every chance of killing the individual in question.

Obviously many won't give a rat's a$$ what my true intentions were at this point but I thought I would address the issue anyway.

In any event, as usual, I stand by my initial post.

(A few individuals that have caused me actual physical harm in my lifetime have met negative circumstances and or brutal and murderous fates, however never once did I mock or rejoice in their demise. This is one simple moral that I and everyone within my circle was raised to respect and adhere to … hence my earlier post.)

So if a person refuses to give info and or cannot recall what happened to them, either must be on drugs, protecting someone, or inflicted the injury on themselves.

In this matter as far as I’m concerned if the victim doesn’t give any info, the police should take all the clothing, check it for gun residue, get the bullet and then charge the victim for procession of a fire arm and discharging a firearm, I’m pretty sure this would be the case if it was a normal member of the public.

This has nothing to do with politics…only the mindless puppets from George Town'sCentral area ever voted for Frank McField and even them have learned their lesson.

Respect is earned, not bought and Frank McField lost any little that he did have, a long time ago….and yes….time longa dan rope…as Frank McField is now finding out.

A proper criminal investigation into how, where and why Frank McField has been shot will reveal much more about your good Dr. Frank than you would ever have believed but that some of us already know only too well….
