Cops report Christmas crashes on the increase
(CNS): Despite the hopes that its seasonal road and public safety campaign would have raised awareness on the islands’ roads the RCIPS said Tuesday that three times as many minor road crashes had taken place over the past few days than normal, prompting police to issue a reminder to drivers to take more care on the roads. “Normally we see around three minor road crashes a day, but over the past few days we’ve sometimes seen as many as ten,” said Chief Inspector Robert Scotland. “Drivers are just not paying attention to the road or weather conditions.” (Photo Dennie Warren Jr)
The senior officer highlighted some of the offences his officers are recording as well as the causes of these various crashes which have not caused any serious injuries.
“We’re still seeing people ignore the speed limits, tailgate and, despite the fact that using cell phones whilst driving will soon be illegal, people are not changing their driving habits and believe that they can safely multi-task when driving,” CI Scotland said. “It’s only when they get involved in a crash that they realise how much damage that lack of focus and concentration can cause. Fortunately the majority of the crashes have been non-injury, but the next driver who doesn’t concentrate on what he or she is doing may not be so lucky.”

They ban cellphone use and accidents double! I thought that it was the phones causing the accidents. Clearly the cellphones were keeping our accident rate low.

Rental car companies should have these flyers in all rental cars. I had thought about printing about 45,000 off and sticking them on the windscreens of all the idiots who can't grasp the concept of a roundabout. It even has pretty little diagrams for those of you who can't read. Oh and by the way the mini roundabouts in the industrial park are roundabouts too, same process. They are NOT four way stops. Give way to your right, traffic already on the roundabout have the right of way and use your flaming indicators it's not difficult.
Brilliant stuff. Although probably not practical, I personally would like to see this info plus the cardinal rules of the Cayman roads printed on the back of your driver’s licence. When you’re in possession of your licence you are in possession of the facts. It’s more difficult to convince the officer at the scene of the accident “oh, I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to go completely around the roundabout in the outside lane.”
Obviously the roundabouts are not a good solution to improving the safe movement of traffic. The reason they are being built escapes me. Is it a case of "monky see, monkey do"? If roundabouts were ever put to a vote, my vote would be not "No", but "HELL NO!"

They are an excellent solution if used properly, which people here refuse (and I mean refuse) to do.
I wish the RCIPS would educate people about 2 lane roundabouts. All they'd have to do is park near any one of them, pull over the people that clearly have no idea what they're doing, and explain how to do it right. That would easily prevent a lot of these crashes and probably save them time in the long run.
Exactly where do you go to get the "rules" about two lane roundabouts in Cayman? You sure can't get them at the rental car counter.

I asked because it does not appear that there is any place to easily get the rules and it's pretty evident that logic does not apply. There are no roundabouts where I come from. Thank god.

It is in the highway code which you need to read in order to take/pass your driving test
There's no driver's test for tourists to rent a car. So where do you get the "highway code"? It seems to me that it's ridiculous to expect all that all the toursits are from somewhere that has roundabouts.
Nothing will happen because of "the rules don't apply to me" attitude that is so prevelant in society here. Just today I saw a woman in the middle of the mini-roundabout by RBC texting on her phone while waiting for traffic to move. Then to top it all a man drove out of Kirk Motors, turned right, drove along the sidewalk into oncoming traffic so that he could get into NAPA parts!
The simple solution is for NRA to put up signs at every major roundabout telling drivers which lane they should be in depending upon their exit. Then you can ticket drivers for failing to obey a road sign. I am sure it won't take long for these signs to pay for themselves.
You are right with that. I have had drivers cut in on the left in front of me to get in the left lane to exit the roundabout. I staya in the left lane to exit.

Thats why we should all approach the roundabouts with caution and take our time to see where some of these morons are turning left or right. They have no brain when it comes to knowing where their indicators are.
Instead of focusing on just people drinking and driving ( not that I support it ) the police need to place themselves on these roundabouts and watch how these morons are breaking the road codes, which carry a fine. I have called and requested this, but only to be ignored. I wonder why?
Does the Government of the day realise that they are loseing tremendous amount of revenue, by the police ignoring the opportunity to apply a fine to these people not using their indicators. It is a breach of the traffic law. Julie, my dear, traffic is your area, get on to the police…lets save some lives. and the constant repairs to our concrete curbs.
I was in England months ago, and wondered why the roundabouts there are so imaculately kept. Have you seen our? looks like rock crushers ran over them, not a scratch on their curbs,some of them are nicely fenced and land scaped.

Unfortunately most of the police don't know how to use them correctly either! I do have to give one police officer credit though, as he had pulled off to the side of the road to use his cell phone. I was most impressed.
