Two hospitalized following West Bay Road smash

| 29/12/2011

westbay road smash.jpg(CNS): Police and emergency services were called to another major road smash on Wednesday evening after two cars collided on the West Bay Road by the Silver Sands condominiums at around 6:50pm. According to witnesses at the scene, a red SUV travelling west smashed into the side of a white car pulling out of the condo complex after the vehicle had overtaken traffic at speed. A man and a woman who were the individual occupants of the two cars involved in the smash were both taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital but officials have not yet confirmed the status of either driver.

The collision caused long tailbacks as the accident blocked the westbound side of the West Bay Road.

This of the the red SUV must had been in a very big hurry, as that is a wide corner and if a vehicle was pulling out from Silver Sands Condo, they could have been cleared before the red SUV reached that entrance.  The speed limit in that area is 40mph, but most times due to traffic backup, itis usually 25mph.or less. The driver was probably overtaking, on the phone or just plain negligent. Sorry to hear that the other person was hurt.  Hope it was minor in juries they received.

RCIPS Press release experts again – "red SUV travelling west" would mean that this vehicle was driving from the road into the sea! WB road runs essentially North/South (except for the minor variations of those general directions for the benefit of the navigation experts).

RCIPS please at least try to get something right. Have your PR scribes publish accurate information, with good grammar, in a timely manner, without pre-matuurely leaking inappropriate information, respecting the sensitivity of families' feelings, etc., etc., etc.

Thats exactly right Mushroom 1… I witnessed it by looking through my rear-view mirror and saw it all unfold just like you said.

Imagine if we had a well designed four lane highway instead of this monstrosity of a road. Wouldn't have these traffic backup problems then.

I thought West Bay Road in that area runs north and south.  I have trouble envisioning what happened.

Doesn’t seem that hard to envision to me. ‘Traveling west’ means that the vehicle was headed towards West Bay. By reading the article, it suggests that the SUV was driving recklessly, over taking, etc. and hit a vehicle exiting a condo complex, thereby screwing up the evening commute for the rest of us with their stupidity and selfishness.

Really? since you were right there and all… Dont assume… The dude was driving into WB and a car was turning INTO Silver Sands, however he swereved to AVOID hitting the next car. It was a one car smash, he did avoid hitting the other car. Get your facts straight.

I swear this is the best place for "know it alls"

It doesn’t take a chief inspector to figure this one out. Everyone who travels along WB Road sees this kind of crap everyday. Why don’t the police enforce the traffic laws and put an end to this nonsense?

What about all the people on holiday? Screwed up their commute also

The Road runs north-west at this point, but oddly enough, just past Foster's Food Fair, towards the four-way stop,  the road turns slightly south of due west. Check the map. It's a bit like the trick question concerning the orientation of the Panama Canal.
