Gunmen rob GT pharmacy

| 10/01/2012

CS tape_8.jpg(CNS): Update 10:20am — Police have now released descriptions of the two armed and masked men who stole a cash register and a sum of money from the Valu-Med Pharmacy in Walkers Road last night, Monday 9 January. The first suspect was described by witnesses as wearing a ‘soldier-type’ camouflage jacket. The second suspect was also wearing a camouflage jacket with a brown towel and a tam on his head. Police say that about 8:30 pm on Monday the two suspects entered the premises. One of the suspects ran to the back of the store where he threatened the cashier with what appeared to be a handgun and demanded cash.

The second suspect threatened another cashier and demanded that she open the cash register at the front of the store. When she did not do so the suspect ripped the register from the counter. Both suspects then ran from the store with the register and a sum of cash. As they made off from the scene the robbers dropped some of the money in the Leafy Lane area.

No shots were fired and no one was injured in the incident. However, the cashiers who were within the store have been left shaken by the ordeal.

Anyone who was in the area at the relevant time last night and saw either of the suspects before the robbery, or fleeing the scene, is asked to contact George Town CID on 949-4222. Information can also be passed via the RCIPS Tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477(TIPS).

Is there any truth in the marl road news today, that someone from the Windsor Park was picked up for the Magnum robbery, also that it is a tall man?

Another crime that will never be solved.

For what is necessary to control this situation in Cayman…no one in authority, the Cayman Islands Govt., the Governor, or the Commissioner of Police, has the guts or backbone to do  it.

If this were Britain, the USA…not to even mention Jamaica….there would be a specialised armed unit of police officers patrolling Cayman's streets on a round-the-clock basis, hunting for these robbers or making sure they are not comfortable to move freely….with the mandate to shoot anyone dead on the spot who is spotted carrying an unlicenced firearm in the committal of a crime…no exceptions.

Opertation Trident in Britain works along such lines in enforcement in high gun-crime areas in Britain, while working with community organizations to discourage gang membership, at the youth level…even Britain, itself, has a much more robust system in place to deal with armed robberies, involving firearms, than Cayman does.

A targeted 6-month operation of this nature might probably turn up a few dead criminals, their choice, but I guarantee you…..this wave of armed robbery would stop or slow down significantly.

Really?? Is it a true question. Has anyone ever been held for any robbery on Cayman Island such as this? What is the incentive to stay away from crime? Because apparently in Cayman Crime pays.

It's pretty sad that even one of my friends from the States who was going to come here to get married decided not to come. I guess his girlfriend was reading the news. Animals are way better than people…they don't crap withing the confines of small spaces.

    • Cheese Face says:

That is very sad, but I think your friend (or his missus) is also rather sad, its hardly Beirut down here is it? Are they any safer in the States?

We need to get the numbers on robberys on the island during 2011.

I know the business properties are usually reported, but the home invasions are not. Having been a victim myself of a robbery at home, I have since heard of many more people who were also robbed.

Why are we turning a blind eye to this? This needs tro be adressed and dealt with.

The numbers for DUI came out quick enough – do the same for robberies… and also – include the number – if any – that were actually solved. I know mine never was.

I agree with the writer.  I too have been a victim yet  no info. on the home invasion was released by the Police.  The criminals are far smarter as not even a Police report can be obtained from the Police Dept.  There are no replacements for persons on leave and no respect for what the public is going through.  I am recommending that all unemployed persons be sent back to their native homeland as the Govt. has no control on any situations on the island.

Only the fools could not see that this was only a matter of time.  Do you see what Valu Med parking lot look like at nights? Where are the lights? I always support this pharmacy but refrain from doing so after 6:00 P.M.

It is very telling that we have yet to have any arrests in the numerous bank robberies of last year, the hold up of the jewellery store in GT in the middle of the day in a busy tourist area etc.  It seems that the commissioner is being proven to be ineffective and there is now a serious loss of confidence in his ability to handle a jurisdiction of this size with its unique issues.  Without public confidence in the police or in its leadership there is little hope of public participation in solving crimes.  Someone needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of the Islands crime and the Islands unique issues such its small populous, border control etc and implement a drastic change in policing in the islands, starting with the top!  if not i fear all is lost.

    • Pale rider says:

09:42 please shut up, because you sound so ignorant making such remarks about the Commissionerof police.  Do you expect the man to stand guard at every business place all day and night.   Think about your statements, obviously they are senseless chatting

Well you usually fire management if a company seems to be failing, not the guy sweeping the floor!

Could it be the same two guys each time? If so then its not too bad then. I really dont think that we have that many robbers around Cayman. Compare the description with like say the CUC robbery. One very tall with a slunched shoulder and the other shorter. Hope we get them soon.
