Rare trees gated off as bypass clearance starts

Protective fence surrounding Wash Wood Trees (268x300).jpg(CNS): Having committed to protecting important and significant wildlife that maybe at risk in its road plans Dart said Wednesday it had saved some rare bushes that were identified on the planned new by-pass road to West Bay. Officials from the firm revealed in a release that some rare Washwood trees were being gated off and protected from the road development. During last summer Dart had worked with local environmentalist, Ann Stafford, and a concerted effort was made to preserve rare and endangered species. The Discovery of the Wash Wood Trees (Jacquinia keyensis), between Yacht Drive and the eventual intersection of Esterley Tibbetts Highway Extension with Batabano Road led to steps to protect them.

“The trees have been carefully gated off with a 4’ galvanised chain link fence to protect them,” Dart said in a release about the land clearance for the new road on.

Wash Wood trees whose leaves and bark were used to make foam for washing clothes are of local cultural significance. Not only are the trees endangered but they are extremely slow-growing so losing any of the trees would be a significant further negative impact on the species.

Dart also stated that other trees of significant size and stature which can be successfully saved will be potted and moved to the Dart nursery for future landscaping.

Dart – Wash wood – and Caymanians have to bend over and accept these changes.

He could at least have sweet-talked usa bit  first!

  2. Anonymously IRON CLAD says:

WOW!! While Dart is doing far more positive for the Caymans than all other investors has ever done combined, I am assuming it's still all a part of the 'White Washing Scheme'….

"See?, we are preserving your trees" (while we so dominantly do against the wishes of the West Bay people and others).

Wow… could see why dart and bush have alot in common!

I guess the other trees that were in the true path of the planned roadway, and were knocked down and cleared away, are not endangered anymore.

And what about the white crabs that lived in the area? Notice how there are fewer and fewer white crabs on the roads these days? Ann, any word on what's happening to the white crabs? Are they being fenced off or relocated?

Actually they went to the same place the ones went to when the land was cleared to build your house.

One thing I like about Dart, as a developer, he is well aware of the environment and the negative effects of construction.

    • Anonymous says:

"Aware of the environment" you say?  The guy who stole 421 conch was also aware of the environment.  I would even say he loved his environment.

Either God or evolution put a large mangrove forest, filled with birds, butterflies, hickatees etc where Camana Bay now sits, with its over prices shops but somehow Dart knows better than both?  WOW he really is almighty!

Oh he replants with native trees you say?

Some are native, but not all. The majority of native plants are dry land plants, which did not occur in that location naturally.

He has forever altered our environment in a way that neither God or evolution approved of.

At least the native Americans fought for their land, while we happily roll over and play good dog for little treats he drops at his feet for us.  Wow what a kind and caring man he is.

Whatever happened to the big guinep tree that he "saved" from West Wind building?

    • Anonymous says:

It was move to behind coconut Joe’s parking lot.

    • Anonymous says:

Good question, can we see a photo of that guinep tree at its new location- some of us miss seeing it,  you know!

  7. Anonymous says:

Dart should place them in the median of the road with other native landscaping

    • WeSoF*%#ed says:

So someone in a tricked out Honda can fly off the road and destroy them?

    • Anonymous says:

Washwood is not so easy to move and it grow very slow.

Nice he saved them but it would have been nicer if he had of saved the mangroves and not built that fuggly Camana Bay.

    Wow actual conservation!

    Amazing…

at last some real caymankindness……. maybe it should be called expatkindness

    • Anonymous says:

It is so actual and absolute that the amount of cement poured to make the fence, could have made my driveway

  10. Caymanian Concerned says:

Thank you Mr Kenneth Dart for saving the trees, and thank you for building this New road.  One thing I am quite sure of is, that it will be beautifully viewed, because anything you do is well done.

I have had many opportunity to visit Caymana Bay, and believe me anyone who cannot appreciate what you have done there is plain ungrateful.  Even how you have captured the inlay of the silver tatch in many of its forms.  I am proud.

I am sure your new project will be just  as beautiful.  My memory go back to just a few years back when we Caymanians were ran off the premises of the Westin and a few other places along the West Bay Road.  We could not use the beach, we could not sit on any of the chairs, we could not sit under the trees,  and we were treated mean.   Now you have Caymana Bay open up where family can take their children on holiday and weekends to the park and water fountain, it is just beautiful, and I say thank you.

Persons who write against your projects are not Caymanians, and the few Caymanians who do are being set up by the people they work for.   I wish they would stop it.  They will all soon be using the new road and I say they should feel proud.

I am looking forward to using it the same way I do the other bypass.  Thank you for all you have done to make this Island a more beautiful place.  Others who have been here for donkey years, had the opportunity to do what you are doing, but they refused, and stashed they wealth away in swiss banks.  Thank you for making Cayman more beautiful
