Woman threatened and mugged on Eden Road

| 19/01/2012

(CNS): A television news reporter was at the scene of a mugging earlier today and had finished interviewing the victim and witnesses before detectives from the RCIPS arrived. While so far the police have only confirmed that they received a report of a robbery and are waiting for details from CID, Cayman 27′s Kevin Watler has filed a full report with the news station that a woman was mugged at the junction of Eden Road and South Church Street at 7:05 am. He was told by the victim that she was walking to work and saw a guy sitting on a fence. As she walked pass him he said with a Caymanian accent, "Stop, give me your bag!” then he held something to her neck, but she could not say for sure if it was a firearm or knife.

The victim told Watler that she begged the thief to please give her the passport in the bag, but he walked off briskly.

A witness saw the thief run to the back of Eden Road with the victim's handbag and called police. Other witnesses at the end of Eden Road said they saw a man fitting his description running towards Windsor Park. As he was running he took off his shirt. He was described as wearing a black long sleeve shirt, baggy blue jeans, dark sunglasses and a mask over his head with anopening for his eyes.He was about 6 feet 2 inches tall.

RCIPS officers arrived at 7:49am and both the victim and the witness who called police were unhappy it took so long for an officer to talk to them, Cayman 27 says. Shortly after police arrived the victim suffered a panic attack and an ambulance had to be called. See Cayman 27 report.

In a separate incident, a crime involving a firearm may have been averted yesterday after a witness saw a masked suspect outside a house she was visiting and ran inside. Police say that at about 10:30pm last night (Wednesday 18 January) the RCIPS received a report that a woman had been entering a friend’s home in Bodden Town Road, close to the Tape Club, when she saw a masked man armed with what appeared to be a firearm outside the premises. The woman ran into the house and the man made off. Police enquiries into the incident are ongoing and the woman will be re-interviewed later today in an attempt to obtain further details.

As a father of a young family I have decided to leave Cayman as the risks of violent crime are just getting too high.

I pulled the rip cord back in 2009 for the very same reason. It’s just not worth it. You stuck it out rather well, still being there now. Bolder than I was with my family, you are.

Sad Father of Cayman leaving, maybe you should try going to Jamaica, UK, or USA even Nigeria, if you find a nice place please let us know so we can leave too.

    • Anonymous says:

I recommend the UK or US, Sad. Not much crime in these places.

      • Sad says:

There is not as much risk of gun crime in a middle class area where I am going.  The pattern of crime here is fairly obvious and pretty scary.  The banks were hit, they added security, the stores were hit, they added security.  The private homes are next.  All the evidence points to Cayman imploding into the crime levels of other places in the region.  I am not taking any chances.

Robberies will continue as there are many poor people on the island struggling to make ends meet.  All that is happeningis that the rich are getting richer , and the poor poorer.

When families stop encouraging children in their bad habits, it will certainly make a difference.  They spread their sperm and families take care of their off springs and the sperm-doners relax at their parents expense.  Let them work and shoulder their responsibilities and they may learn from one bad mistake.

We have "gunmen" running around causing havoc and senseless killings. Then we have the RCIP… WHAT A JOKE. They are trying to take away our rights as Caymanians to bear arms and protect ourselves and family from such violence that is occurring on our/ MY Island. RCIP you need to get your #$%^^& priorities straight, like simple days say… wait until it starts happening at Cayman Bay, then we might hear that we have Sylvester and Dolph Lundgren coming down to start an expendables team to fight against crime. Let me also address the fact that if that women had pepper spray she would most likely still have her valuables and also the guy who mugged her would be running down the road with two sore the hell up eyes.  OH wait pepper spray is illegal; I forgot they only give it to RCIP officers. WHAT A JOKE!!!  Our daughters, sisters, aunts, mothers and wife’s. Every time they step out that door there is always that chance. I for one think that women should be allowed to carry pepper spray to protect themselves.

So sad this is happening and so sad it took the police 45 minutes to get there, such a short distance from the station.  The criminals know how inefficient the RCIPS are and utilise their weakness for criminal activities

Cayman 27′s Kevin Watler should be made comissioner for that quick response time! If only the police could show up when you actually need them.

  7. A1 says:

What is disturbing is that they are starting to target people's homes. I thought things quiet down after the shooting death of that young intruder, but it looks like I am wrong. They seemto now hitting homes more than businesses. Very worrisome. Anyone I see in my house with a firearm with the intention to kill me, is not leaving my house alive. If I let him live, the police will detain him for a time and courts may just give him his freedom. Then the same culprit who has marked my face will come back to kill me. It is sad that such measures may have to be taken by homeowners to protect themselves and their family members. When there is a home invasion, I suggest 5 tips: 1. You need to develop a code word that will tell your entire family that its time to spring into action – an intruder is in the house. A code word like "escape"; 2. Designate a "safe room" in your home where everyone can go to at the same time. This room should be stocked with several specific items that will help you survive the upcoming fight. The one thing that you must have in this room is a phone that can be used to call the police; 3. Do not, under any circumstances, leave the safe room. If you have your family in the room with you, resist the urge to put on your cape and fight the invaders single handedly; 4. If you are using a gun for home defense, position yourself in a corner of the safe room that is on the opposite side of the door. This will give you the maximum amount of time decide if you’re going to shoot because you’ll be the last thing the intruders see when they burst through the door. In this instance, you have the advantage because they will have to make an assessment of the room before they make a move. You only have to decide if you’re going to shoot or not. You will know that its either the police coming to your rescue or the bad guys coming to harm you. Just make sure you don’t shoot the police; and 5. Stay in the safe room until the police arrive, no matter how long it takes. Even if you are pretty sure the home invasion is finished and the intruders have left, do not leave the safe room. You can’t be sure that the attackers aren’t lying in wait to take your family by force to hold as hostages or cause harm. Stay in the room until the police have cleared the house and tell you to come out before you decide the home invasion is over.

They have been targeting homes for a long time – it is just not reported.

How many home invasions were there in 2011? I wonder…. a lot more than we heard about.

So what idot is going to post "serves you right" for walking down the road just like yesterday for saying "serves your right" for wearing the jewelry. I really hope they catch this guy but you know we don't have any really have any police. I am starting to dislike the police as much as the Criminals. I certainly don't like the Government. Some one left the door open a long time ago and it isn't who's in the wood pile its who isn't in the wood pile.

    Wait a minute!

So this guy was sat on the fence with the mask on when the victim was walking to work and first noticed him?  Coz if I saw a guy sat on a fence with a mask on I would most certainly turn round, go home and raise the alarm before walking past him.

This is exactly what I thought but it seems something must have been lost in the translation because it does not make any sense. The poor woman was probably so scared she got confused.

      • Jogger says:

Listen to this  16:36, early one morning as I was taking my usual beach walk, along with a friend.  We turned down a beach track to walk the beach and do a mile stretch.  Just as we bend the corner parked in the end of the track was a blue car with two men standing outside and one sitting inside.  We were about ten feet away from them and we stopped suddenly, because they scared the shi*t out of us and obviously we did the same to them.  5 AM IN THE MORNING.  I said to my friend lets run back to the top of the road, but she said quickly, "Are you crazy,? we will be chased for sure"  So with nervous feet and a nervous smile on our face we continued or walking in their direction.  All three began to stare, and as we got closer, the greeted us with these words "Princess ye going fe early morning walk"  We smiled and said "Oh yes"  Nervous killing us as we passed them expecting them to grab us and maybe throw us in sea.

Any way we took up walking speed and must have walked ten miles along the beach fearing to return to our car.  Finally we found another road and got to the high way and got a ride back to where we had parked.

I can understand the woman not running when she saw the man with the mask, because in a moment fear sets in, and not every one wants to be chased by a masked man,

IT IS TIME WE CARRY A STRONG SPRAY OF SOME KIND WITH US WHEN WE ARE WALKING THE STREETS.

  12. So sad says:

Who walks to work at 7am in the morning? I think this is a nanny on the way to work and this is very sad as she is probably already struggling to make ends meet. Come on man. This is heartless. And to replace her passport as well will be so hard for her …and costly too.
