PPM Bodden Town MLA to host meeting over landfill

| 23/01/2012

GTLF 1(2)_2.jpg(CNS): While members of the Coalition to Keep BT Dump Free await their opportunity to express their concerns to their government representatives, the opposition MLA for the district, Anthony Eden, will be hosting a public meeting Tuesday evening to give residents and others affected by the proposed move an opportunity to offer their opinion and input on the plan. Although the coalition is not a politically affiliated movement, organisers said they welcomed the meeting as an opportunity to add additional names to the list of MLAs already supporting the campaign against moving the George Town landfill as part of government’s proposed investment deal with the Dart Group.

Representatives from the coalition said they welcomed another opportunity to present the views of its members to the public. Representatives from North Side and East End as well as the opposition leader will be attending the meeting.

Alain Beiner, one of the leaders of the single issue movement, said the meeting reflects the growing opposition among people to the relocation of the GT dump and the pressure on MLAs to speak out and give voice to this opposition.  “Dart wants the dump ‘out of its backyard’ and wants to dump it on us, with no concern for the consequences,” he said.

The coalition is currently using the freedom of information law to gather information regarding the proposal but so far has not been able to find any reports about the decision to move the dump, the selection of Bodden Town as the new location or the impact it will have on the district.

The group is still waiting for the government MLAs in the district to answer the questions it has asked and has raised its concerns about continued lack of consultation with the people of the district.

Vincent Frederick said he hopes that people will show up to speak their mind at this latest district meeting as he said government’s failure to consult and lack of openness has intensified fears.  “We still don’t know who chose Bodden Town, how or why,” he said.

Greg Anderson, who will be one of the speakers at the meeting, pointed out that the residents of Bodden town have not been told if there will be an Environmental Impact Assessment or a public rezoning process for Midland Acres, as required by law.

“Government seems completely unconcerned about due process and about the consequences for our people and our environment, and we call on government once again to abandon the planned relocation of the George Town dump.  Let’s fix the problem where it is instead of contaminating a new site,” he said.

The meeting is set for Tuesday, 24 January at 8:00pm at the Bodden Town Civic Centre.

Im glad that Mr. Eden has organized such a meeting for something extremely important that relates to our island.

Us as Caymanians need to wake up and smell the roses, the coffee, the flowers and everything that has a scent to it! And learn to pick the sense from the non-sense!

We need to stop bringing one another down and start liiving together as one and in unity.

We have become a weak and unsportive nation for our own people because of greed and selfishness and everything we worked our blood and sweat for and that is dear to our hearts is being sold out to the foreigners, because caymanians refuse to get up and educate their selve and learn something but instead their sitting down arguring about the situation and not doing nothing to help themselves and this country!

So starting with this lets all come together as one and put our foot down and start defending our one and only home.

I'am for one against the dump going to bodden Town.

Except for a few, all I can read is many mean comments which say nothing, define nothing. I'm glad that such a meeting took place and that Anthony Eden organized it. It's about time that we react to this nonsense and injustice. People who really care for this island are speaking up and saying no to the needless relocation of the dump, especially when in involves threatening the integrity and well-being of a community.

One could argue that the opposition is trash- as it has taken the subject of trash to wake them up!  Apart from West Bay, North Side and East End, the rest of the country has NO voice in the Legislative Assembly. It is sad that we pay these so called represntatives thousands every month- and they only ignite and call a meeting to discuss a proposed dump? Not saying that it isnt a worthy topic to discuss- just saying that where has he been since May 2009????????

I had even forgotten there was a third elected member in Bodden Town.

Lol……all that has happened folks is that the PPM discovered that Charles Clifford was advising the Coalition to Keep BT Dump Free and the PPM said….."oh sh%t" we better mobilize to stop the Chuckster from taking credit for this one !.

Otherwise the PPM would still be fast asleep in wonderland.

Too bad a modern incinerator got "dumped" on. It is the only way to actually reduce the garbage you are storing. Landfills assume you have plenty of land. It may take a while but eventually Cayman will be half landfill, especially if the population goes up.

Bodden Town needs representatives we can trust, not those who will sell us out to Dart.  When will the people wake up and smell the roses, not the stench from the dump.  Speak out, speak up and keep the dump out of Bodden Town..

It seems like anything that isn't wanted anywhere else, finds its way into BT.  I t is time for us to get some development that will lift our town not garbage that will cause more problems now and in the future.  Just think of the increased traffic in and out of the district on a daily basis.  It is going to costs us the residents in the end.

Let the dump remain where it is and the government or Dart do what is necessary to clean Mt. Trashmore and utilise the other 30 acres to complete the new phase that was started.  A dump is never moved from its orginal site.  Modern technology is the way to go, is that impossible?  Get the views of all the bidders and take if from there.

With all of the uproar regarding the transfer, has anyone of you visited a Solid Waste Disposal system?  I think you people need to look into this, if not already done before voicing an opinion.  I understand that it will be a solid waste disposal system – recycling, and not a dump as wepresently have.

Check it out folks, then criticize!

Smart ass, it is not PPM, it is BODDEN TOWN that is going to be filled with stench.  Stop looking behind, look ahead, the future lies ahead.  Sensible people strive for excellence, stupid people are always left behind, so lift your head out of the ground and take the blinders off.

We don't need the dump, no no no.

Did someone finally wake Anthony up?

    • Anonymous says:

No. He is still asleep. He just sleep walks a lot and may show up at the meeting, but rest assured he is only there in body. His mind will be somewhere else.
