‘Bermuda Cliff Jumping’ goes viral on YouTube

| 15/02/2012

cliff jumping.PNG(CNS): A teenager's video of his Bermuda vacation, which includes many shots of a group of friends jumping into the ocean at Abbott’s Cliff, has been viewed on YouTube so far over 150,000 times, and now that it has been featured by the Huffington Post website it will no doubt become even more popular. 15-year-old Giles Lorimer Turner, who made the video last August with his 16-year-old brother James using a waterproof, shockproof, near-indestructible GoPro camera, told the Royal Gazzette that by October the video was getting 30 or 40 views a day. “I remember telling one of my friends we were ecstatic just to get 700 views. I don’t know how, but it went viral," he said.

Giles, a student at the UK's Rugby School, said, “We were at Admiralty House park and did a lot of cliff jumping there. Those jumps were planned very carefully. We made sure it was deep water at high tide. It’s exhilarating up there you get up topand you know it’s deep water and high tide. I don’t want to say it’s group pressure, but you have to overcome some fear. We just want to have a good time, but you don’t want to do stunts and risk it.

“The cliff jumping video was shot all in the same day. We went that afternoon to Abbott’s Cliff. You get a really nice panoramic view there. We shot that around August 20, and I think we put it up around August 24.”

Put a life guard there or build a proper platform and ladder just like any deep side of a pool. Its not the cliff that was the problem.

Cliff-diving in Bermuda is one of our favorite traditions when it comes to swimming. Matter of fact, its a rite of passage for all young Bermudians. While I understand there have been some tragedies in Cayman regarding cliff diving, I must point out that in Bermuda, it is regarded as very safe and I can't recall any incident of injury in recent years.

In Bermuda everyone dives off the cliffs during the summer: Adults, teens and children as young as ten! Some do it as a dare come to like it and do it all over again.

    Stupid is as Stupid does.

Jump off the right cliffs at the right time and it's all good fun

Do it from the wrong clifs at the wrong time, well I'm sure you get the picture…

Doesn't matter about CNS posting the report, it's all about being intelligent enough to make the right decision.

  5. Anon 1.0 says:

No, some kids (not all) don't know what they're doing out there.

  6. Absurdistani says:

In light of the recent deaths here in Cayman stemming from cliff diving this is ill-timed and insensitive.

  7. anonymously says:

yep…if the rock head politicians ever jump off, you know its heads first

  8. Brit says:

But no-one seemed to comment on the fact that the water looked like it was in a lagoon AND they had boat support!!!

  9. WeSoF*%#ed says:

Good job CNS! What are you trying to do here? Encourage more to jump??

Actually, Someone should really give the kids that jump off at pedro GoPro cameras, and the video footage of the next drowning victim should be shown at schools to deter more from jumping.

ugh. you scaredy cat, don't encourage others to be scardeys too. Lets just enjoy this life we have and not try to command others or push this 'fear' propaganda.

That's what they said to that last guy who jumped and lost his life. Try not to push the stupidity agenda.

Looks like fun and a great marketing tool. Wish we had somewhere we could jump here…..

    • Two Wrist says:

Why don't we get the Chinese to build new cliffs and charge much more than anywhere else to jump off them?  Mac could be the inaugural jumper.

Here we go again..glamourising this….CNS..Is this really news.?.Come on we need to save our young people not encourage them to kill themselves…

    Be responsible please…

After the deaths of the kids jumping off the cliff at Pedro's Bluff, it's irresponsible and insensitive to put this story on CNS.  It's not even newsworthy!

Following on from where you started we should also ban the following:

1 – stories about chrysler cars – my best friend was killed in one

2 – stories about the stock market – when lehman crashed I lost my retirement fund & this was extremely painfull for me

3 – stories about older folks – we have all lost an older relative

See where I am going with this? Sometimes we think before we speak. I think the more public discussion and public awareness of the situation at Pedro, the better for ALL, or we could do it in typical "Cayman" style and bury it, that makes it ALL better.

You are either deliberately misinterpretingthe poster's point or you are clueless. This article has nothing whatsoever to do with creating "public awareness of the situation at Pedro". Quite the opposite it portrays a very dangerous activity as fun and attractive perhaps leading to more deaths.

    • Anonymous says:

Thats like saying all the war stories and movies about WW2 and the FIFTY MILLION that lost their lives is insensitive too.  Get a grip, news is news and we all know what happens to nations that are kepts in fear by the press.

      • Anonymous says:

Don't be ridiculous. WWII was over 65 years ago. The deadly cliff jumps here happened a few weeks ago.

        • Anonymous says:

Right, there was no news during WWII.

THAT'S WHY UP TO TODAY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD ARE UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND HOW HITLER GOT AWAY WITH IT FOR SO LONG!!!

  13. looking at the photo says:

wow… jumping in the water without shoes, is that how you do it?

  14. Anonymous says:

And I repeat – its time we did the same for Pedro Bluff.  We're never going to stop kids from jumping there but we can help them to become more knowledgeable about the undercurrents and tides and when its safe to jump, plus we could make it a competitive extreme sport and turn this into a moneymaker for Cayman and extreme sporting enthusiasts.

Thank you for making us aware of this! I would have never known.
