DoT considers fines to close statistics gap

OwenRobertsAirportGCM.jpg(CNS Business): A significant discrepancy between the surge in overnight visitors to the Cayman Islands and a decline in hotel and condo occupancy rates through 2011had some tourism stakeholders concerned that things didn’t add up. However, the Department of Tourism has said this is down to the failure of the islands’ accommodation owners to accurately report their occupancy rates. Acting Director of Tourism Shomari Scott is appealing to owners to send in the information, which is crucial to the DoT’s work. Given the current economic climate, he said, no one would welcome legislation introducing financial sanctions for a failure to report. Read more on CNS Business
