Bush wants CI defence force

| 09/03/2012

Premier views scan image.jpg(CNS): Premier McKeeva Bush says he wants to create a Cayman Islands ‘disaster defence force’ once the country is in a position to afford it. Speaking at the official inauguration of the customs new crime fighting equipment this week, Bush revealed his wish list for when the country is better off financially for further crime fighting and security measures.  He said it was a long standing goal to create Cayman’s own special cadre of personnel that would work alongside the RCIPS in special circumstances, such as in the wake of a hurricane or other emergency situations, to protect the public.

“In this day and age when you are developing and moving forward, trying to build a nation, we have to build services and I hope that I can see a disaster defence force before long,” Bush said. “It’s not on the front burner but it is moving up and I have spoken to several people about it. Funds are not available now and I don’t know when they will be available but I consider the protection of borders, especially in natural disasters … where we ought to have our own, so we don’t have to reach abroad as we did for Ivan.”

He said one day, when government had the finances, Caymanians would be trained and recruited into the country’s own defence unit that could be there when needed in the wake of disasters and emergencies. “I consider that we ought to have our own cadre of defence force personnel that would work with the police when needed,” he said.

Talking about how much money the government has already invested in crime fighting, he said there were many more things that he wanted to see that would help to keep the islands safe, not just from the threat of crime but natural disasters.

He spoke about getting even better and more sophisticated protection for the borders with a national radar system so the emergency services would know “what was coming down on us” and be able to have the helicopter, boats and other emergency resources available in the right place.

“These are costly things,” he said but he added that his government wanted to move forward with them.  “But we need these services and one of these days we ought to have the funds to … supplement the police with these services,” he added.

I was one of the few people that first suggested that we needed a Military unit or base down here. I suggested it  during the Christmas party that was held at John A Cummber school in december 2011. I my self planning to join the british Royal Marines Commando in the later half of summer 2012, also being in the Cayman Island Cadet Corps. Plus having Family in infantry and special forces in both US and UK militarys, I canfor sure say the Cayman Island needs one or two military units or bases wheather army, navy and/or Coast Guard , marines or Air force

If Cayman's people can't see through McKeeva Bush yet, they never will….and that doesn't say much on behalf of Cayman because a blind man can see through this one.

With all the smart, intelligent people in Cayman, both Caymanian and foreigners, how did this man ever become the Premiere of Cayman ?

I truly hope that Cayman's voters have learned something by now and understand that letting McKeeva Bush into power is like putting an unruly, misbehaving child in a toy store, saying "have some fun !"

If left to his own devices the toystore will look like a paradise in comparison to what Cayman will look like once McKeeva Bush is done with it.

A more idiotic, threatening idea, I have never heard in all my life.

This sounds like a McKeeva Bush 'hit squad' if you ask me and England would certainly have a thing or two to say about this if it ever surfaces while Cayman is still a British territory.

"We don't need education" is what our fearless leader has said about Cayman and he proves the point almost every time he opens his mouth or comes up with another idea. All of this out of the big brain of our leader. If I did not live it I would never believe this from anyone.

Ihave a better idea – if there's a repeat of Hurricane Ivan just get boots on the ground (US Marines, British Paras, Royal Marines, whatever you need) ASAP to deal with looters.

In the wake of emergencies and disasters you need firemen, heavy plant operators, volunteers of all types. Just as I thought when its broken and in disgrace then they start thinking about responsible protection. I have been preaching this from 10 years ago to all government parties since 2001.

It should also be mandatory to license all boats and have permanent GPS(against the law to be tampered with) in which if a vessel extends 12 miles they must by law call port security if existing or entering and possibly get searched depending on how long they were away.

I hope this radar will be used for all 3 Islands and of course  the larger stretch of water between GC and the sister Islands can not be monitored.(depending on the feasibility)

People question why the Caymans has not had more help – many believe the government actively tried to play down the crisis for fear of undermining the huge offshore banking industry.

Former government minister Charles Kirkonnell told me: "It should not be covered up. We have a disaster, we have a catastrophe on our hands. It needs to be met. We need to be truthful about the whole thing."
