Mac pulls out of vote debate

| 28/03/2012

mckeevagt (221x275).jpg(CNS): McKeeva Bush has pulled out of Thursday’s public discussion forum on the topical issue of one man, one vote and will be replaced by Cline Glidden. It is understood that the premier will be in Cuba with the management and board of Cayman Airways on a “retreat” to discuss issues relating to the national flag carrier. The premier was expected to appear at the Harquail Theatre to defend the voting status quo on for the Generation Now roundtable in the face of a concerted campaign for a referendum before the May 2013 election on the issue of single member constituencies.

The trip to Cuba comes on the heels of the premier’s recent travels to Honduras, Panama and Washington and prevents him from taking part in the public forum and defending his decision to maintain multi-member constituencies for the 2013 General Election and to hold the referendum on one man, one vote at the same time.

The premier was to appear alongside the opposition leader Alden McLaughlin and independent member Ezzard Miller, who both support the principle of one man, one vote, and Adrianne Webb, one of the Electoral Boundaries Commission, which noted in its report the problem government would face in connection with George Town and the need to increase seats.

Based on the head count of registered voters and the population growth in Bodden Town, the commission stated in its report that if government was to retain multi-member constituencies, the numbers dictated that two additional seats would be required in the capital and one in Bodden Town. However, it noted this would mean that George Town voters would have six votes and a disproportionate influence on the make-up of the national government.

The obvious inequality that this will create has fuelled the campaign for one man, one vote and has led to the success of the campaign and petition to trigger a people’s referendum on the issue. Miller said Tuesday that the volunteers who are collecting signatures are within a hairs width of securing the 3,800 names of votersneeded to trigger the referendum.

The battle, however, will now be to either persuade the premier to merely implement the new voting method without the need for a national vote or to at least hold the referendum before the May elections as stated on the petition.

UDP back-bencher Cline Glidden will now be defending his boss’s position in the face of dramatically declining support across the country for multi-member constituencies.

Glidden, who is the third elected member for the district of West Bay will, if the voting system is not change before next May, be facing an electorate that for the first time will have less votes than those electors in the capital.

What’s to debate? His position is clear, he does not support it, 30% of the people do not understand it and don’t care to and 60% don’t want it. This is an issue being pushed by a very small group of people.
A better debate would be on reinventing caymans economy, what next.

    • Anonymous says:

Let me explain. In a debate you don't just bellow your position from a bully pulpit amid the cheers of blind supporters, you have to answer questions and explain and support your point of view with actual facts and clear reasoning. There is no surprise that Mac went pulled out in those conditions.

Every informal poll conducted to date has shown the overwhelming majority of people to be in favour of one man, one vote. Even though many who do support one man one vote have not signed the petition for fear of victimisation from govt. those who have signed the petition already exceed 30% of the entire electorate and rising. You insult the intelligence of Caymanians by suggesting that they would not know how to cast only one vote rather than 2, 3 or 4.

Your numbers only represent wishful thinking, not reality.

East End, as small as it is, is a great example why 'One Man One Vote' will result in expensive cash overruns and waste — they have 2 civic centres and 2 post offices in a lil district like East End, only because the Gun Bayers see themselves as being separate from East End.

Never mind that if it is introduced, there will be SIX MLA offices with staffing etc in different corners of George Town alone!

    — of course, paid for (like the MLA salaries & pensions) by u and I

    • Anonymous says:

Since Gun Bay is not a single member constituency it doesn't really prove your point at all. Breakers also has its own community centre. Savannah has always had its own primary school and post office. Obviously it has nothing to do with electoral district boundaries but with the fact that they are separate communities.

The MLA offices thing is nonsense. The only reason the four in WB share offices is because they all belong to the same political party.

If this is the best you can do then you have totally lost the argument.

It is amazing how badly you people have missed the point.

Puppet Mac does not need any of you to get re-elected.   He is strongly supported by a gaggle of fools that are not smart enough to realize what a disater and disgrace he has always been.  These idiots say he is a good man because he goes to church (sometimes) and gives away appliances.

The next referdum needs to be for dismantling of the UDP gang and a life-time ban from politics for Puppet Mac and all of his cohorts.

    OR,

    B. Will he continue to be the whipping boy for McKeever and take the chance that if the one man/one vote process comes through he will have ruined his political career once and for all.

Bush pulled out of this very important debate to go on a retreat to Cuba for what?  He could had retreated right here on the Beach or at Cayman Airways Board Room if he wanted to, but that would not be wasting any of the people's money.  He is over in Cuba for other alternative matters like meeting with Hugo Chavez about airline fuels and more or maybe he wanted to meet the Pope (sic), but he could had flown there on a friends private plane or on a personal plane ticket. He did not have to be taking his whole entourage XXXXX and a Cayman Airways plane to waste more money.  This man is a disaster and we need to get him out of office fast.  First Honduras, then Panama, now Cuba, so where is it he is heading next?

Retreat = Full expense paid vacation paid for by the Cayman people Caymanian and resident alike.  I have no doubt that no good will come of this retreat since it is not the first or the last.  There is no accountability at Government or Cayman Airways for that matter.  There is certainly no need for the premier to be there at all.  This is why there is a board of directors appointed, to oversee the running of the business and report to the government.   Where else would you hear of a premier going on a retreat with a board of directors?

  36. Chris says:

So let me get this straight…..Mac didnt know that he was scheduled to travel for this retreat until today? If he knew of his travel plans earlier why did he commit to debate this national issue only to pull out at the last minute?

Generation Now, the next debate should be on "How to Stimulate the Local Economy: Less traveling overseas for retreats and negotiations".

Word has it that these overseas meetings are outside the prying eyes of locals and FOI requests.

The writing is on the wall; the Caymanian people really want one man one vote and single member constituencies. They have galvanized their support behind the idea of having a more accountable democracy. Mr. Bush realises One Man One Vote must come for the May vote so instead of trying to throw spokes in the wheel and run from the debate, he should do the right thing and change the law to help avoid the expense he claims a November referendum will bring.

Perhaps his cunning strategy is to spend out all the referendum money on this Cuba trip and then claim we are "too broke" to hold the referendum!

All of them politicians are the same! Do not replace UDP with PPM; just like the americans replace Republicans with Democrats every 4 years and get more of the same.

The environment of democracy needs a structural change. XXXXX Tranparency in public office with the Press acting as the proper 4th pillar is the answer. The other 3 pillars being legislative, judicial and the police. Have a public TV channel where all bids and tendering is open to scrutiny. Post RFP's(request forproposals) on a govt news bulletin on the web. Let the whole world know what is required of a govt. project and how to bid for it. The cloak and daggers are promoted and facilitated by both parties.

    • Dred says:

You know what the real issue is. There are probably about 3 reasons why YOU BASICALLY HAVE TO DO EXACTLY THAT.

      1) You want to know for sure that UDP does not get back in. Saying that you are concerned that throwing votes at Independents and not to PPM might help UDP retain control. It comes down to best of two evils. If I had say either PPM or UDP it would be PPM everytime BUT that's not saying a whole lot.

      2) You are also scared that EVEN IF we get Independents you could get a Quagmire in the LA. That is a basic stalemate. Like 7 UDP, 7 PPM and 4 Independents or 6 – 6 – 6.

      3) Then finally you are scared that some of the independents really are wolf in sheeps clothing. That is UDP posing as independents or PPM posing as Independents.

These are the things you worry about when you are voting. Is the person I am voting for TRULY independent? Can they hold their ground against aged veterans like Alden and McKeeva? Will they avoid corruption?

Whereas Mac could not bring a decent argument and would have long pauses, CG will now bring a confused argument from the elected government side.

What happened to Ellio aka Mini-Mac? Surely he would have captured the Bible-folk with his proverbs and parables while also confusing the rest of the audience and not actually answering the questions or debating any issue.

    • Anonymous says:

Ellio is probably with Mac in Cubas to act as his official spanish translator.

      • Anonymous says:

Imagine translating one of his parables to try to make a point or give a direction to the taxi..

[In Spanish] "Where is our hotel? Yeah, it is right up here. You see Mr. Driver, if you have two buildings and you want to sell one, but you dont have the money, what you have to do is get a loan from your pension, then you take that to a bank for a deposit for a loan to sell one of your buildings, and voila, there it is- our hotel."

  58. Anonymous says:

So that means Mac is scared to engaged in debates?  Ha ha ha.. you guys make this up as you go… no?

  59. Anonymous says:

haha…chicken opts for another jolly instead of a debate…..

  60. Anonymous says:

This confirms that Puppet Mac and former right-hand jester, Cline, are not on good terms.   Rather than making a fool of himself, Mac has offered Cline to the firing squad.                 Cline should call in sick.  He will be destroyed!!!!

What you need to ask is why C keeps taking a beating and showing up again and again in support of Mac.

      • Anonymous says:

        The Inner Circle

      • Anonymous says:

Maybe Mac has something on him.  How else can anyone explain why CG keeps shooting himself in the foot by allowing himself to be used once again – and who will be once more left to take the fall / bad rap when it all falls apart?   Because you can't intelligently defend the indefensible.  The UDP knows this, and the premier knows this.  So the only conclusion left is they know they will fail, and CG will oncemore be the scapegoat.  This should prove to CG what opinion the premier really has of him, and hopefully CG will be intelligent enough not to allow himself to be used again to further someone else's agenda.

    • Martin Sutton says:

You couldn’t make this up. The people of Cayman are powerless to stop the damage.

  61. Anonymous says:

The UDP doing damage-control BEFORE the debate begins.., hahahahahahaha

    "

Any bets on the following 1) mac is a no show. 2) mac walks out before half time."

Peanuts, you called it right!! Wish I had taken that bet afterall… (sigh)

I've heard of the long arm of the law, but this takes the cake. The ventriloquist will be in Cuba and his dummy will be here.

LOL…  Reschedule the debate!  Did we all think he was goping to actually show??

  66. Anonymous says:

Is anyone surprised that Mac has turned tail and run?

How much will this trip cost us and who else are we paying for?

    • Anonymous says:

      XXXXXXX

Look folks, it doesnt matter if Mac debates this, you will not get One man one vote (aka democracy) because you need him to agree to it, Turkeys and Christmas. He relies on the present slanted system to control the LA, he isnt about to change that is he? In England, they had a slanted system that required the agreement of the robber barons and the monarchy to change the system they benefitted from. It took hundreds of years and probably the fear of French style revolution to slowly unwind the system.

  67. anonymous says:

"retreat" is right…that is exactly what you should be doing…RETREATING…or could it be the new codeword that means, "get EVERYTHING I CAN FOR FREE NOW, cause come nex year, I is out"…

  68. Anonymous says:

Let's see – chilling with a few mojitos at our expense or showing up and risking being shown for what he is – tough call.

BTW – why the hell does Cayman Airways haveto waste more of our money on a retreat in Cuba. If they needed a retreat at all there are plenty of facilities in this little country of ours that could use the business. We the people are subsidizing the total cost of this little perk for management and the politicians.

  69. Anonymous says:

No surprise there!  There should be no debate on true democracy. End of Story.  Premier realises that and sent CG to the slaughter while he takes another vacation in Cuba.

And If the government is going to waste our money on "retreats" at least spend it in Cayman Kai, Morritts, Little Cayman or Cayman Brac so it actualy stimulates the local economy.

This is a list of the Cayman Airways Board that are likely along on the joy ride:

    Ms Pilar Bush, Chairperson

    Dr Dax Basdeo, Secretary

    Captain Wilbur M. Thompson, Director

    Mr George Hunter, Director

Mr Nathaniel S. Tibbetts, Sr. JP, Director

    Mr Phillip Rankin, Director

    Mr Joseph Imparato, Director

    Mr Anthony Akiwumi, Director

    Mr Norman Klein, Director

    Mr Shomari Scott, Director

    Mrs Sonia McLaughlin, Director

    Mr Leonard Dilbert, Director

Well said – what does Cuba have to do with Cayman Airways?!  Or stay at the beautiful Reef Resort…..even get $10 voucher towards your room if you wanna stay!  Ridiculous!

    • The Aviator says:

Never in the history of human transport has such a small airline had so many directors with so little experience of the industry . . .

    • Alice says:

The board of CAL should resign for this waste of the public money. This retreat should be held in Cayman . Why are we spending public funds in Cuba. Shame on you Board members.

    • Anon says:

Honestly, Is this a joke? – or is this really the Board of Cayman Airways?

  70. Anonymous says:

There appears to be an interesting story in this. What is the urgent issue with Cayman Air, causing an unsheduled last-minute meeting? Besides the one-member constituency debate, isn't Lord Blencawthra here for meetings with the Premier? To abondon his visitor and the debate, one has to assume there is a very pressing issue. What interest does Cuba have in the national flag carrier?

    • Anonymous says:

I think the Airline might have been mistakenly sacrificed to Copa Airlines on the Panama trip.

  71. UDP Supporter says:

I am not surprised that our Premier chose not to attend this meeting. It is clear to me as well to other true, fair-minded Caymanians that this would only turn into an opportunity to bash our leader over his reasonable position. He's the leader of our islands and always done what he thought was best for our islands even if some "Caymanians" and their expat backers do not agree! We all need to come together and have as much faith in our Premier as we would have in the word of God!

    • Anonymous says:

      More blasphemy.

    • Anonymous says:

As an atheist, I confirm that I have as much faith in the Premier as in the word of God.

    • Anonymous9 says:

Hey UDP Supporter, that's a good spin!

I tried to click the laughing face button but once wasn't enough.  (And it's not showing up…)

      Anyway, Hahahaha!

      Is that you Foolio?

    • Anonymous says:

Are you comparing the premier  to the word of God?  Haven't you read "do not put your trust in man"

    • Anon says:

UDP Supporter – When I read your comment my jaw dropped!! You're really "over the top" comparing the Premier, a mortal man, to the Word of God.  God help you.

    • Anonymous says:

No other politician has more expat backers than the premier, he done give 3000 of them status!   Yu tink it was all for nought?  Payback time now, he counting on them to "back" him good.

  72. Justonebigscorethatsallhewantsnow says:

What a coward. And spending public cash to have a mini break to Cuba to discuss the National airline with its board, instead of taking a day in George Town – how very cushy and nice for the people involved. I wonder if this is a special charter laid on by CAL – just a quarter of the seats full and lots of catering?

This is more evidence of the contempt McKeeva Bush feels for his electorate. He knows his time is almost up, so he'll do just as he dam' well likes. That includes running from any proper debate. The only public meeting he'll show up at is one where there is no risk of being questioned about anything.

  73. Anonymous says:

I could see that comeing as soon as the words left his mouth.  First "smart" thing I have seen Bush do.  He is Too busy racking up 1st class miles while he still can or he is just running from responsibility again.  LOSER!

  74. Anonymous says:

Oh…what? He's not going to be there? Surprise Surprise

  75. Anonymous says:

  76. Tara says:

How predictable!  Sending someone else to do his dirty work…..!  Or does he have to excuse himself simply because he realises he has no good argument to defend his position and so rather than go down with his sinking ship he'd rather head to Cuba (on a "retreat") to escape and leave someone else to guard his sinking ship – a bit like the captain of the Costa Concordia!
