LA to meet 4 months after last adjournment

| 29/03/2012

P5270066.JPG(CNS): Legislators are finally set to meet in the country’s parliament next month after a four month break and for what will be the first time in 2012. A meeting of the Legislative Assembly has now been called from 4th to 13th April but because of the Easter holidays and other scheduled meetings the politicians are only likely to be in their seats for a few days. Law makers have not met since last December when the House was adjourned by the premier sine die. No business agenda for next week’s meeting has yet been set but several issues remain outstanding from the last meeting.

In the wake of the news that the country’s MLAs would finally be attending parliament Ezzard Miller, the independent member for North Side said the timing made no sense given that the Easter holiday fell in the middle of the planned session meaning that the meeting would be for no more than a few days.

He pointed out that a meeting with MLAs and the visiting UK politicians was also scheduled for Wednesday afternoon which was likely to cut short the first days sitting. Then as Friday and Monday are both holidays and Cabinet on Tuesday the parliamentary meeting was already looking short lived.

Miller accused the premier of disrespecting the democratic process with the cavalier attitude towards meetings and adjournments and no proper planning or management of Legislative Assembly.

He said however, he had taken the opportunity to file a motion for the meeting to abolish the compulsory retirement age to enable people that wanted and needed to work to be able to do so.

  1. Democracy Now says:

The stress these people undergo is evident in this photograph. Some of them are clutching the armrests of their chairs others stiff as a board. They need long breaks – months at a time – after struggling over the myriad details of running the country. What a job. And working for a pittance with no thanks for their efforts. No wonder most of them (hopefully) won't last long.

I don't believe there is a deadline by which time you must actually file transfer documents. Could one conceivably buy land from a politician during his/her term in office but not actually file the transfer documents until the politician is out of office? Think of the incentives one could have not to file. Hmmmm. Another question I have: can I take 4 months off and still get paid?

    Does Cayman actually have democracy?

First, one man one vote, it is a basic component, resisted in England by those anti democratic forces of generations past, until they could resisit no longer.

Similarly, failure to call the elected assembly to "parliament", regularly used to cut the b*lls off the people elected to serve.

Both were used by those that held power to ensure that democracy didnt work.

AndCayman it seems has both of these which means that your "premier" can treat the democratic process, and thus the people of Cayman with contempt. Ever since the First Cayman scandal it has amazed me that you continue to allow him to do this, isnt it time you got rid of him?

This is an outrage! maybe if they would stop taking trips all over the globe they could find time to stay on island and get some work done!

By the way has anyone done a cost comparison on the reasons for these trips, the actual benefit the island receives versus the idea that the participants get a "free" trip with lots of perks?

I would like Ezzard Miller to put forth a private members motion to make it a crime to sell property and not record the sale and pay stamp duty on said sale.

The punishment for not complying up to $100,000 and/or 10 years in Northward.

Please explain. You can only have an effective transfer of property by registering the transfer at the Land Registry at which time you must pay stamp duty.

and to think they are going to add 3 more to the elected branch. what a joke.

if you need more elected ministers take 2 from the gov. back bench

and abandon the idea of an additional 3.

it is a total waste of expenditure  to add 3 more

we have 15 elected members now  and only 5 working on a day to day basis.

that means 2/3 (10) are just running up and down looking after their own agenda.

ya tell me all about the committies you are on!  do you attend?  ??

are the meetings held, oh ya,    ya ya ya  SOME TIMES but we dont go or just drop

in and ask to be excused .

We are the only Country in the world that have  1  elected representative

for less than 999 voters and we want more to fly about to come up with

silly ideas that can be had right here on any corner you choose.

What would their paychecks look like if we actually paid the LA by their attendence and hours actually served to their oath of the country's best interests (ahead of their own self-interests)?

All of their salaries plus the Speaker's enormous one should be reduced to mirror the low quantity and quality of work they are putting in.
