Long awaited LA meeting short lived

| 04/04/2012

(CNS): Despite not having met since before Christmas, legislators spent just over an hour in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday morning before the premier adjourned the parliament. With MLAs facing a number of other official engagements, including a groundbreaking in East End at the Morritts Resort as well as meetings with the visiting delegation of UK MPs  and Cayman's London representative, the politicians addressed very little of the issues on what was a full order paper. After several reports were laid on the table, including the long awaited National Census report, and the first reading of three bills was made, the brief meeting of the country's parliament was over.

During the short session the deputy premier revealed that government is leasing the old craft market site on Cardinal Avenue to Magnum Jewellers, which she said had won a government tendering process. She laid the report of the vesting of the plot of crown land, which is now a public document.

The premier adjourned the proceedings until 10am Thursday morning when the legislators are expected to deal with the Custom's tariff bill, an immigration amendment and the new arbitration bill. Government is also expected to table a motion regarding government guarantees for the Cayman Islands National Insurance Company (CINICO).

When crime is unheard of in a country, and it's up to date financial reports are showing a healthy economic surplus, and all its people are fully employed and earning decent salaries, and import duty rates are at an all time low, and the country is prospering like never before there really is no need for gowerment officials to go to work on a regular basis now is there, especially considering the fact that they are the only employees in Cayman working under the protection of a minimum wage, right? It's simply not fair to say that our gowerment just decided to take four months off on full pay when it is obvious that they had to attend a ground breaking all the way out in East End and they had to meet with some UK officials during that time now is it?

Governing a small town of 50,000 souls should be a part-time job for 7 or 9 persons.

No wonder this government is in hock.

Agreed, but Cayman is not comparable to a small town. It functions as a country for most purposes.

If you ran a parish council in the UK like this it would be shut down but the Governor is happy to sit back and let this farce continue?

Makes you wonder just what the FCO is planning doesn't it? A repeat of TCI maybe? Sort of give the MLAs enough rope and let them hang themselves?

A time clock should be installed in the LA and they should be paid accordingly!!

I'm not defending them-  no way! However, I am sure their salary is also supposed to cover district office time etc, meetings outside the LA etc.  I'm sure this will get some thumbs down but I'm just pointing this out.

I do not support UDP or PPM…have voted independents last two elections for this same reason but its just fair to mention the balanced view. I'm salaried employee but if I only come in to work for one hour one day a week- you can be sure I probably will have that deducted from my pay.  Just because they hold high offices does not make them any better to get away from their responsibilities

    Pathetic.

And the Speaker still gets her $160,000 plus salary for non work. Only in Cayman.

Such a bunch of pitiful politicians.Making hay while the sun shines.Get a real job and see how the rest of us have to work hard to make ends meet.2013 cannot come soon enough to end this nonsense once and for all.ONE MAN VOTE SOON COME!!!!!.

Just be thankful that the bill for the free food they wolf down will be less than normal, that they did not vote to give themselves another raisem and that they did not approve the transfer of government assets to their buddies. Short LA meetings with nothing being done is an improvement of longer meetings in which they country's assets are stripped and money is wasted on foolishness.

So then this was the most productive meeting of the LA in the last 3 years.

This is disgraceful and a very poor example of good work ethic.  Isn't a part of these elected members' "job description" to conduct regular meetings in the legislature? Why the heck are they being allowed to do this?  Is this what more power in politician's hands gives us? Seems so! They should all have their slaries cut to correspond with their lack of performance!

Another bunch of free loaders looking for their end ! What are they going to do for Cayman absolutely nothing ? How that mi lord sorry your worship!

Biggest Crime being committed  is our politicians are being paid over $10,000 K a month for 1 hr plus a coffee break 15 mins brings it to 45mins total, talk about money for nothing this is what they should investigate The sad part is they are getting away with it every month!

It is so comforting to know that our beloved leaders are willing to take a whole hour out of their tremendously busy days of photo-opping, glad handing, partying and picking up their salaries, to spend on such a trivial matter as running the country.

Works out to $1200 CI/hour (this includes going to CNS to find out what's happening).

Adjourning Parliament for groundbreaking ceremony?  We now know where all their priorities lie. This is f%^king disgraceful.

    • Anonymous says:

Did you really expect them to miss a photo opp? Come on now.

Free food and drink is more likely to be the motivator.

        • A. Pastafarian says:

I'm sure they love anything free, but the photo op with the possible garnering of votes is VERY important!  (Obviously more important than some paltry paper work that might make Cayman better.)
