Teen prisoner in critical care

police station (245x300).jpg(CNS): Updated Thursday 1:30pm   While the teenage prisoner remains in critical care after being trapped in a blazing cell Wednesday morning, the ten police officers who were also hospitalized due to the fire at George Town police station have all now been released. The police station, however, is still closed to the public and investigations into the cause of the fire continue. Police staff have been relocated to nearby Elizabethan Square pending further assessments of the police station building by the fire service and planning department. The public can still contact staff either in person or via the phone and a temporary front desk has been established on the 3rd floor of Elizabethan Square.

The fire started around 10:15am on Wednesday morning and police said it was confined to the cell area before it was extinguished by the fire service. An RCIPS spokesperson said that there is some smoke damage to the building as a result of the blaze.

Although one police officer and the teen prisoner were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, once the smoke filled station was evacuated, another nine officers reported feeling unwell and were also taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment, all of whom have since been released. Although the teenager remains in critical care, officials say the young man is in stable condition.

Anyone wishing to contact GT police station is asked to call the temporary number 943-4311. For emergencies the regular 911 number should continue to be used.

Meanwhile, shortly after the blaze at the police station another fire also broke out in the generator room at CITN’s television centre, which was evacuated before the fire service extinguished the blaze.

I pray this child will make a full recovery. This is a major Government liability as a result of poor management of the RCIP. The parents of this teenager now have grounds for a lawsuit as a result of the RCIP not ensuring their child’s safety while in their care. All organizations are required to have a health and safety plan filed with the labor office and once a person has been arrested, the RCIP are responsible for their safety.

Regardless of how it started, I can't imagine anything more terrifying then being locked in a cell with a fire raging.  Whatever the teen did, it must have been a horrifying experience.  I do wish him a full recovery….and then he can face the music for his offences.

I wonder who is responsible for starting the fire and how long it will take to investigate?

As an ex RCIP officer I can confidently state that the cells are, and have been a health and safety disaster for many years now. The working conditions for officers in the cells are appalling, and the cells are reminiscent of something from the movie ‘Bankok Hilton.’ The Cells do not have walls around them, only a kind of mesh so if someone does have a lighter it can be passed around, and it’s not hard to get items like lighters past the best of officers when prisoners have it stuffed up their backside or concealed under their scrotum.

Rather than blame the officers involved, the RCIP should do what the poor officers who work at GTPS have been asking for – for the last decade, and that’s completely overall the cells. Up to this point any requests have fallen on deaf ears, no doubt if some of the senior management had to work in the cells block it would change overnight however.

I would really like to know the age of the teen.

    • Anonymous says:

18 is adult, so pick a number between 13 and 17.

      • Anonymous 2 says:

Teenager refers to any person aged 13 (thirTEEN) to 19 (nineTEEN).  So technically the prisoner may have been a teenager but also considered an adult.

        Noun:
A person aged from 13 to 19 years

I guess this will mean RCIP will call for another $9 million in emergency funding.

let me guess the RCIP didn't search the prisoners lmao,
