Jamaica-Cayman bishop issues corruption warning

| 18/05/2012

gregory.jpg(Jamaica Gleaner): Newly installed Anglican Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, the Right Reverend Dr Howard Gregory, is urging the church to dissociate itself from tainted money, which continues to circulate in the society where corruption is rampant. Gregory said yesterday that members of the church could not consider themselves exempt from corrupt activities if they were either caught up in or benefiting from the act. He was speaking to a packed Cathedral Church of St Jago de la Vega in Spanish Town, St Catherine, after he was enthroned as the 14th bishop of the diocese.

"I warn the church that the rally card and some of the fund-raising activities need to be subjected to closer scrutiny as they run the risk of bringing drug and other tainted money into the coffers of the church," he declared.

By law, The Bishop of London is the only one with jurisdiction over the Church of England in the Cayman Islands. No other Anglican bishop can claim jurisdiction.

    • Anonymous says:

By law, there is no Church of England in the Cayman Islands.

    • Anonymous says:

If that is correct why hasn’t the church of England in Cayman been given official recognition by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

    Nice hat.

ROTFLMAO  ….This is the funniest thing ever written.   Ha ha ha He actually said that?  The two countries with the most hypocrites in the world. I haven't been to church lately but I hear that my open sin is worse than their secret sin.  Please tell me where in the Bible it is written? Sin is sin unless the Bible has been rewritten since I studied it.

  6. Oh Hush says:

They Churches has participated in corruption in the Cayman Islands for umpteen years.  For eg: they have sat silent and allowed a Double Stanard Society to evolve because they too participate in it!  Nuff said

Years ago I heard a very intelligent man saying that Jamaica has more churches than any where else in the world and more likewise. Well, now a days we here in Cayman are almost the same, seems like it  caught on. I too really believe that all sort of illegal stuff happens in some of these churches and quite a few folks join the churches for the same reason and not to mention POSITION.

Imagine what he would say if he knew the truth about the churches in Cayman!

  12. disagree says:

So Soldiers, policemen, customs, immigration, fire service, the air force should all throw away their uniforms and wear anything then?

How aabout the muslim women with their heads covered? should women wear short mini skirts and bikinis to church?

    I believe in standards.

Hear ye, hear ye receipents of the nation building fund. Be warned. Do you know honestly where the money is coming from to build churches?

    • Be Careful if you believe says:

Hear ye Hear ye.  Be careful now.  Dont mess with GOD'S TEMPLES.  Remember he respects no one when he begins to pour out wrath.  I hope you are a lonely man with no wife, no children or grand children. and beside this too I hope you are an atheist.

God please help us if you are a believer.

How very christian of you, now wonder Ivan made such a mess of Cayman with people like you on it. Gods wrath? God help us that you are here at all.

Did you notice that there was no deaths. God is so caring that he made the hurricane happen so that so many of you could come here and get the clean up etc jobs, and he protected us from fatalities. On another note those who lived in little homes was given better homes by our good Government.

Don't be so wet. If your god is anything like you, he's probably some angry old figment of your imagination itching to hurl a thunderbolt or two.

The true God cares nothing for buildings full of empty vessels, for "what house will you build for Him?"

Rather the true God inhabits the humble hearts of His people, the ones who have stepped from darkness in to His most glorious light, the light of His word that he revealed in His Son, the risen one.

Please leave your hurtful presumptions behind and join us on this great journey known as life. Sprinkle love wherever you go, for true love shines brightly in this demon-infested realm of darkness.

Wow Unbelievable – IF you are a true believer, that person is who u r called to help in this life, and to hopefully usher into the next life!

Why r the 'Christians' of Cayman (yes Im Caymanian) so much into finger pointing and hypocracy?

  14. EYE ON THE ISLAND says:

Will the church leaders that have taken "Nation Building Money" please give it back. You have remained too silent for too long on matters of importance to our Nation. Hush money makes certain men like "Silence of the Lambs". Money makes men dothings they normally wouldn't do. God sees everything.

Maybe if you induce them with some food, a hat-trick or medicine like most missionaries did to poor infidels, the church leaders will start to break their silence. But then again, if they are already fat and content to continue the free manna money from heaven, why should they. I'm sure they can find some justication for why Jesus gave them that money, by way of thier earthy connections of course.

He'd probably have a lot more credibility if he'd lose the fancy dress and start laying hands on the sick, ministering to the poor and casting out devils.

The days of the religious finery and outward shows of righteousness were declared officially over when the Son of God sojourned among us, kicking the devil's butt all over the place. Lucifer is still hurting, but it isn't over yet. It's our turn next. I am spoiling for the fight. The first place to start looking for trouble is in our own hearts.

I am shocked at my capacity for evil thoughts, prideful ways and judgmental attitudes. By the grace of God and an honest heart before the Father, perhaps I too will slay my Goliath.

    Peace and truth to all.
