Sports minister applauds Webb’s historic achievement

Mr. Webb with FIFA President in Budapest (276x300).jpg(CNS): Following local football boss Jeff Webb’s election as president of CONCACAF in Budapest Wednesday, the sports minister, who was also at the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) congress, said he would become one of the most important men in the world of football. Given the size of the Cayman Islands, Mark Scotland said, it was an historic achievement by Webb as well as a proud moment for the Cayman Islands. Pointing to the importance of administrators to the game, he said Webb was arguably the best football administrator in the Caribbean region.

“Behind football’s famous clubs and players stand the administrators, such as Mr Webb, who quietly ensure the smooth running of the sport,” Scotland said.  “With his can-do attitude combined with his leadership skills and signature diplomatic style, Mr Webb’s contributions to the growth of the sport of football in the Cayman Islands are unsurpassed.”

Webb became president of the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) in 1991. A year later CIFA became a member of CONCACAF and in July of that same year the association became a member of FIFA.

Scotland said Webb had both passion and vision, not just for Cayman Islands football, but the development of football locally, regionally and internationally.

“It is safe to say that under Mr Webb’s leadership, football has become an every man’s – and woman’s – sport in our Islands. The Association currently presides over sixteen domestic league and cup competitions, ranging from under 13 boys, under 15 boys, under 17 boys, under 17 girls to the senior men and women's level,” the minister added.

During his tenure as CIFA president Webb has also served as a member and deputy chairman of the FIFA internal audit committee, the FIFA transparency and compliance committee, the Caribbean observer on the FIFA executive committee and a member of the CONCACAF youth committee. Most recently he led the CFU normalization committee.

Both very honest comments, these last two.

Blazer was reported to have accounts in Cayman…doesn't mean that Webb knew about them.

Warner's been reported by CONCACAF's auditor, John Collins, to have been involved in massive tax evasion from the US Govt. registering CONCACAF's Centre for Excellence in Trinidad in his own companies names…and generally stealing CONCACAF's money left, right and centre for over 20 or more years now….

    Can't believe Webb didn't know about that….

But as Webb has said in his acceptance speech, 'lets move on and get back to our core activity…which is football.

Cayman's press has covered for him very well…never asking or allowing him to be asked. 'did you know about the 40gs that Frederick accepted?'…The Daily Gleaner has only followed Burrells's story line.

Its all meant to give him the best chance to succeed in cleaning up the corruption in FIFA's most important confederation.

I'm no supporter of his but I think he deserves that chance.

    Well done Jeff.
Even the education minister raised a glass or two…

  3. Shirley Roulstone says:

I am very proud of you Jeff and I know for sure you are the right man elected to be President of CONCACAF!!!  You should be proud of your accomplishments and I only wish our own LA had members with your leadership and integrity!!!   Can't wait to shake your hand my friend…..an old girl baller from the same rock!!!!

So Jeff Webb's appointment has now been applauded by Mark Scotland as well as Sepp Blatter. Mmmm. Good article about Mr Webb's appointment in the Gleaner today, mentioning the corruption scandals involving Chuck Blazer and Webb's predeccesor, Jack Warner. Both of whom were fully supported by Webb when they were in office. Guess he didn't know what was going on. Only one real issue with the Gleaner article. It says "One year ago Webb's home country [Cayman] was among four whistle blowers alleging bribery involving Warner and Qatar's Mohammed bin Hammam" but as we in Cayman know, Webb's home country was one of those where a CIFA official and FIFA delegate, David Fredrick's, accepted the packages containing US$40,000.00 being distributed at Warner and bin Hammam's bequest. When the news broke Fredrick simply resigned and Webb said nothing about the incident. Nothing. Like it didn't happen. So not sure about the whistle blower reference. Anyway, way to go Jeff on the question of transparency and ethics.

At the CFU meeting Gordon "Banks" Derrick was elected as their new president. The same Gordon Derrick who was sanctioned and fined by FIFA for his role in the cash-for-votes scandal.

FIFA executives, from top to bottom, remind me of Bishop Desmond TuTu's warning about corruption in the ANC saying "they stopped the gravy train just long enough to get on themselves".

Does anyone know the amount of Sepp's salary yet? Did Warner have any accounts in Cayman?
