Politicians decide to make top titles eternal

| 05/07/2012

_DEW9467.jpg(CNS): Members of Cabinet have decided that top politicians and speakers of the LA will keep their 'honourable' monikers for all eternity because of the “burden of responsibility borne by those posts”, according to government officials. A release from GIS stated that people who have held top political positions in the Cayman Islands Government or presided over the legislature will retain the title of “Honourable” in perpetuity. Officials have said, however, that there will be no cost to the public purse and that the small numbers of posts involved will limit the potential for proliferation of holders.

Government said a soon-to-be revised Order of Precedence will include an explanatory note to this effect, although the former post-holders will not otherwise appear on the list that outlines the ceremonial order for government officials.

As a result of the change former LOGBs, such as Truman Bodden (1994-2000) and Kurt Tibbetts (2005-2009), are entitled to resume use of the so-called honorific title. Those who have since passed away will also be bestowed with their honourable titles beyond the grave.

Meanwhile, past Speakers Linford Pierson and Edna Moyle may also begin using the designation. The current deputy premier, Julianna O’Connor-Connolly, who served as Speaker from 2001-2003 can retain her honourable title should she leave Cabinet.

National Hero Sybil McLaughlin, who was the first Speaker of the House (1991-1996), is already honourable.

The position of leader of government business (LOGB) became defunct following the enactment of the Cayman Islands Constitution 2009, which introduced the new title of premier, a position presently held by McKeeva Bush, who had previously served as LOGB from 2001-2005.

    • Freakin' 'ell says:

“Honourable Jackass”, to be more precise, though the word “honourable” has “officially” ceased to hare the meaning formerly ascribed to it; “honourable” now means corrupt, incompetent, boorish and unpleasant. Please note the change in your “official” dictionary.

  3. NeoSurvivor says:

I thusly appoint myself "Honourable Survivor"………….. because I f'n earned it and will continue to do so.   However, I don't want anyone to call me that, because, well, that'd be sorta ………. arrogant, wouldn't it?

Me humble.   Me not over-proud.   Besides, titles put no food on my table, nor anyone elses, and I DO share food with my people.   This is truly the most sorrowful and pathetic story I've ever read on CNS, and that's saying a lot.

  4. Anonymous says:

I reckon the title “honourable” must add to the prices that can be charged for “consulting fees”.

  7. Honourable Absurdistani says:

Why don’t we all just call each other “Honourable” from now on to nullify this motion that the UDP cretins are bringing to the LA.

    John: “Good morning, Hon. Bill.”
Bill: “Hello Hon. John. How’s your father, Hon. Jack?”
John: “He’s well. He’s up the hill with my mother, Hon. Jill.”

  9. Truth Police says:

Come on ya'll!  You know that you can't go out on the book tour and the guest speaker circuit without a good title before your name!  A permanent "title" helps sell more books and bumps up those speaker fees after you leave office, baby!  Mo' Money, Mo' Money, Mac-Cayman style. =)

Criticize the predictably tacky Premier all you want, it is the Speaker that has allowed all of his nonsense to carry. Her sworn duty is to reign this in, yet she is as silent and complicit as the Opposition. There are many conspiring supporting characters that coddle this dysfunctional regime, perhaps in hopes that it might continue to the next incumbents. Hopefully we can learn from these dark days and repeal the corrupt apparatus that has silenced debate and plunged us to the brink of direct taxation (if it isn’t already too late). 300 years ago the crew would have had their swords drawn and a line of traitors would be awaiting their walk on the plank.

Yeah that’s deserving of a title…I can think of a few.

    • Anonymous says:

You mean 75 cents per gallon on gasoline (increased from 50) and 85 cents (increased from 60) on diesel. That is why both the price of gas at the pumps and your CUC bill are high.

  17. Ysgub says:

They want to do this "Because of the burden of responsibility borne by those posts”? Are you shitting me? Has anyone but me noticed that the word "ACCOUNTABILITY" is never used in any discourse given by these morons. We should have laws that state: Any person who takes on the responsibility of representing the people of these Islands in any official position, shall and must be "ACCOUNTABLE" to such an extent, that if any law and/or regulation is broken, bent, skirted or violated in any way, for any reason, that causes loss of revenue and/or is not to the benefit of the people of these Islands financially, or otherwise, because of their "IRRESPONSIBILITY" and lack of ACCOUNTABILITY" Shall! Be it "THE PREMIER" and/or any member or members of "THE CABINET", be removed immediately from office, and their pensions frozen and forfeited to be used in RECOMPENSE for all the funds wasted.

I'll venture to say there will  be no more so call NATION BUILDING PROJECTS etc. etc.etc. In this Island the greatest oxymoron is the phrase:

    "GOVERNMENTAL  ACCOUNTABILITY"

We must stop letting legislators write the Laws that Govern Us which keep them Living Large, a lot of us in the Poor House. They still put the screws to us even after they leave office. WHAT A SHAME!

  20. The Last King of Scotland says:

The title of Honourable is a title that in my opinion should be EARNED, Mr. Premier. You and your cronies have done nothing in the past 3+ years of running the CIG to deserve such an eternal title. You are correct in your claim that as a senior public servant there is a "burden of responsibilty" that accompanies your position, but I beleive you are already well compensated for that "burden of responsibility". Along with the "burden of responsibility" comes an equal measure of accountability. Your preformance in this regard has been dismal, Mr. Premier. Instead of stepping up to the plate and performing in a manner that is expected of you, you have resorted to public ranting, insults and finger pointing that is unbecoming of a person in your position. No amount of titles you bestow on yourselves will ever make us respect or honour you more.

I am once again begging the Governor to call in the troops if necessary, but get this uneducated idiot out of our government.  He is a disgrace to the office he holds and all the millions he bestows on the church will not buy him into Heaven.  Hope you got that meaning "KEE,KEE"..

I am a firm believer that when a person EARNS a title then we will refer to them with their title, but until then they are just like you & I! MLA's are elected by the people & ministers are appointed by the premier. Ministers are given the title honorable while they are in cabinet but that does not mean they have EARNED that title. This bunch of dishonorable members of parliament are so undeserving of the title honorable that it is obvious why this stupid suggestion by the UDP must never be accepted. If they do what we elected them to do & are deserving of honors then the government will reward them with the MBE or OBE or whatever others honors they want to make up, but to suggest that ALL ministers will be deserving of the title of honorable even after they are not elected members of parliament is ludicrous, selfish, & very arrogant. We only have to look at the present bunch in cabinet to know for sure that this is a very BAD idea. They should get off their high horses, their self made high thrones & start concerning themselves with the struggles of their people instead of worrying about what titles will be etched on their tombstones.

Did Brac voters elect her to talk on radio or sort of the country's problems?

    • An Onymous says:

Inexcusable and most unbecoming behaviour and attitude by anybody, anywhere, anytime but even more so when exhibited by those in such lofty and role-modelling positions, particularly that of an Honourable Deputy Premier!  Oh well, just another example of total disregard and disrespect for the value of other individuals' time and, unforgivably in this instance, the lack of urgency and importance placed on sorting out Cayman's finances/budget.  Is there a verse somewhere in the Bible about self-importance and haughtiness?

While no one is immune to occasionally being a bit late for an appointment, there is absolutely no valid excuse for such highly-paid representativespublic servants to flippantly and intentionally manage time in such a way as to ensure arriving extremely late for a meeting – and not just any routine meeting or social gathering, but an unprecedent meeting with the UK Economist who, we understand, will only be in Cayman for a few days!

  40. Libertarian says:

British titles like His Excellancy, Honorable, Highness, Lord, have been used for hundreds of years under their system, because it is assumed that Government and the Monarchy is ordained by God. They are God's kingdom on earth; hence, the "United Kingdom." The UK government has Church & State unified in many of its aspects. That is why they lost to America, because Americans refused to call anybody "Lord" and be told and ordered what to do and taxes to pay without any representation. Let us face it people. Our system here is but a small twig coming from the same corrupt tree!

    • Anon says:

Paying taxes and having no representation, now that does sound familiar.

And the name the United Kingdon has nothing to do with God, just the Acts of Union and the fact it is a Monachy

On 1 January 1801, the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland united to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Most of Ireland left the union as the Irish Free State in 1922, leading to the remaining state being renamed as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1927.

And the government of the UK is secualr, just like the US

And as for losing the US "because Americans refused to call anybody "Lord""

….and this is the self-indulgent sh!t our overpaid MLAs are dreaming of…accolades and praises for themselves?

This country is a joke in many ways.

  74. Well kiss my Jackass! says:

I refuse to address  some of these people now as "honourable" while they're in office. Why would I do it after they're gone? HONOUR is something that one earns by the accumulation of great achievements {for the benefit of the people} while in office. If there is one of them that has done that, then perhaps I might consider it. But I can't think of any!

They should be more than thankful to have had a school or road or anything else named after them while in office.

Oh by the way! If I refuse to address them as honourable "which I refuse to do, am I DONKEY FACE?

  75. Anonymous says:

And what is funny is that it’s supposed to be the position not the holder e.g. Hon Minister John Smith – not the Hon John Smith, Minister ….

      Extremely good point.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes, and one ignored by those who really, really fancy themselves. "Honourable" indeed! What a joke. Hell will freeze over before I ever refer to anyone as "honourable". This is an affront to common decency and I certainly hope someone with some real sense of honour repeals this piece of moronic nonsense. It'll be interesting to see which media actually burden the public with this crap.

Outrageous….. Does Her Majesties Government not have a say in this ?

  77. Will Ya Listen! says:

    Can "A**hole" be eternal too?

  78. datisme says:

And in this way they have changed the meaning of "honourable" to what is usually thought of as the opposite.  Kind of like Premeir, leadership, responsibility, and my personel favorite accountability.

  79. V says:

Basically they are forcing us to refer to them by these undeserved titles even after we kick them out of the house for being utter and total sh¡t at their jobs and being dishonorable. Nothing honerable about the UDP… especially Bush. Sacralidge to use the word “honorable” before his and his cronies’ names. This is just something to force us to respect them after all is said and ruined.

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

  80. The Magic Dragon says:

Is this really what they are sitting around doing?

  81. Anonymous says:

I hope they don't forget to award themselves medals.

I suppose the next thing McKeeva will do is declare himself an emperor like what Jean-Bédel Bokassa did in the Central African Republic in the late 1970s

Too hilarious.  Such a sense of self-importance.

  83. Anonymous says:

That's for the Thursday afternoon laugh,  just goes to show how much they think of themselves.  Shame that they haven't figured out that many in this country think very little of the "right honorable" members, you guys are way too funny for words, OMG

  84. Anonymous also says:

Sounds like Mac is protecting his ego against not getting re-elected,  I hope that there is a clause that if one of those individuals is convicted of corruption or any other charges that the title will be taken away.

  85. Anonymous says:

Did they take a break from working on the budget to come up with this, or is this something that they needed to budget extra funds for?

  86. Anonymous says:

What happens if one of these 'honourable' individuals is convicted of a crime and sentenced to jail?

Then they'll be labelled 'Her Majesty's pride and joy' forever. Guess who's goping to be first.

  87. Anonymous says:

Too bad they can't be forced to act in an honourable manner.

    • Anonymous says:

I think that should be our standard:  we will address them as Honourable when they begin to behave honourably.

  88. Anonymous says:

And Nero fiddles whilst Rome burns…

The honorific is borne due to the status of an individual as a member of the legislative assembly. If an individual is no longer a member, than they are not honourable. To continue to bear the title demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the system of government we have. I am staggered by the self-indulgent nature of the current cabinet. Without a budget in place I am appalled that this was even brought to the table. Well done Cayman – we have elected a bunch of muppets who are more interested in feeding their own vanity than feeding the poor and the needy.

  89. Anonymous says:

Respect must be earned. This is too funny!

Bush has just shown the world that here in Grand Cayman respect can be bought.

What next? Salaries for life, free gas for life, exemption from import duties for life, immunity from prosecution or civil action for life?

    • bear baiter says:

Sure, why not? But really, free gas for life? (Couldsomebody please pass the beans?!)

    • Dr. Moody says:

What a bunch of egotistical idiots.  If they have to go around begging for such a title them in my opinion it is not really worth it.  Then again who is going to refer to them as Honourable , I guess they will sing it to each other .  Please let us not get to up in arms over it- instead  we will peel them off one by one when the  nextyear elections comes around – they won't feel so Honourable then.  Swindlers, drunkards and bullies will never be Honourable !! HIP HIP HURRAH!!

  91. Red Flag says:

Children playing make believe in a sand box…….what a shame they don't really take responsibility……..

  92. Anonymous says:

This is ridiculous. Has the government gone completely mad!? They were only 'honourable' by virtue of their office which they no longer have.

  93. Anonymous says:

Just because a bunch of jackasses vote to call themselves lions does not make it so. All this does is dishonour the term "honourable".

  94. Anonymous says:

Is this a common practice in the Westminister system of governance? If not, then why are we doing it?

  95. Anonymous says:

EVEN IF THEY WERE NEVER HONOURABLE!!!

  96. Anonymous says:

Since when did selling your country out entitle you to be "honourable"?
