200m 29 jul 12 035 (289x300).jpg(CNS): Cayman swimming star Brett Fraser missed making the Olympic 200 metre men's freestyle final on Sunday but nevertheless swam a great race alongside his college pal and USA swimming star, Ryan Lochte. Fraser in lane one swam a personal best of 1:47.01, the twelfth fastest time and fractions of a second off the final qualifier time by Australia's Thomas Fraser Holmes, who scraped into the final with a time of 1:46:80. Brett's training partner Lochte qualified with a time  of 1:46.31 in only fifth place, while China's Sun Yen was the fastest qualifier with a time of 1:45.61. (Photo Ron Shillingworth)

Fraser bettered his winning PanAm games performance last year, where he won gold in 1:47:18, by 17 hundreths of a second. He had made it through to the semis in 14th position with a time of 1:47.74, while his brother Shaune failed to qualify with his time of 1:48.53.

However, the competition is not over yet  for the two brothers, who will be back in the pool on Tuesday for the 100 metres.

Our govt needs to learn from this. Invest in our sporting activities for our youth – keep them busy, teach them discipline and focus … Keep them out of trouble. Make sure we have coaches so that all our children can benefit … Congrat Shaune and Brett … Can’t wait to welcome you home.

In the wake of all the negativity and uncertainty in our country (and by our I mean everyone who resides here regardless or origin) it is such an amazing feeling to be able to unify to cheer on our Olympic athletes.  I actually cried watching them in the opening ceremony and again during the swimming.  I was overwhelmed with pride to see this country's flag waving and to see our amazing athletes.  Cayman needed this, we needed a break from all the divisiveness and needed reminding that diversity is one of the things that makes Cayman so wonderful.  I am so proud of our athletes andI hope they know they carry the hopes and dreams of this entire nation with them.  We are with them in prayer and we hope they can feel our support.  I really wish the Tourism and Sports ministries had banded together to publicize this event more. It would be amazing to see banners and signs showing off our Olympic athletes throughout the Islands.  In any event, I will be there screaming and crying and watching throughout the games and I hope all who reside in Cayman can put aside the grievances and come together to show these amazing and dedicated athletes how much we admire and love them.

Brett I watched you and you were tremendous. I even prayed for you, I know you did your parents and Cayman proud. At first I made sure that you was placing first. The next time we are certain that you will. Just hope you will get good support from our Government. Its the youth like you that we need to spend our money on. Just look at how many more like you that could do as well as you but instead they are at NORTHWARD, just because they did not in most cases have the parents like you. A big congratulations to your parents, and oh Shaun congratulations you too did very well.

I am so proud of Brett I watched him swim and I cried and prayed for him. I watched him grow up to be the great swimmer. He had a great swim and we should be proud of him. Shaun was great too but did not make the finals. Good look tomorrow with the fly.

While it was great to hear the 'Fraser' name and 'Cayma'n' mentioned for a split second, what would have been fab is if Caman Olympics/TV had arranged to do some local coverage&commentary of our athletes (and perhaps the wider Caribbean as well)on Sunday – and throughout the week!

Not even the Jamaican station had anything on its local channel!
